Opti-coat users: Whaddya think?

OK, here's my theory. When I worked for Goodyear, I along with everyone else had to sign an employment agreement that anything we "invented" belonged to Goodyear along with other legal specifics. I wasn't inventing anything so it wasn't a big deal to me. So PPG probably isn't going to let one of their lead chemists start a company using their latest cutting edge technological breakthroughs without paying some hefty licensing fees. I suspect that these "acrylic polymers" that Northern Labs (KIT) and others are using is rather old technology that the patents may have run out on.

You might at least allow for the scenario that Dr. G is a bright guy, knows his stuff, spends his time doing things more beneficial to the enduser than sitting around counting his money and actually developed something. You seem to be suggesting Dr. G either "borrowed" technology from PPG or he is using technology so old any patent(S) has (have) expired. I like my theory WAY better than yours.

What the hell happend to this thread? I have missed out on the last few pages so I decided to read up and catch up on the Opti Coat and I come to see everyone b****ing like junior high kids. So this thread will probably be closed soon and there will probably be un answered questions about something that could revolutionize the detailing community. Good job guys, I'm proud to be an autopian :down

Any USEFUL information to be derived from this thread came to a screeching halt when the "a" word (ammonia) was first typed.

Wannafbody, you are bordering on slander by publicly implying that David stole or borrowed any technology.

Fellow Autopians: I think it's time to stop feeding the troll and get the thread back on track. If any of you have pics of the coating please post them with a brief review of your experience including: ease of application and your impression about what it adds to appearance. Thanks in advance!

I finally opened mine up last night and I was surprised at how large the syringe actually was...guess it just looked smaller in pictures. I also thought it would be thicker in consistency but it looks very similar to Opti-Seal.

Not that it matters but I was curious as to why they chose to go with a syringe as the dispenser vs. something like Opti-Seal?

Rasky, the product originally arrived in a 4oz sprayer. The problem was that a sprayer would clog after only one use...no matter if you rinsed it or removed it and capped the bottle or what. The idea behind the syringe is to keep air out and the small opening reduces waste. A spray would be better, but its just not gonna happen due to the nature of the product.

That makes perfect sense then...thanks! Can't wait to try it out! Hoping to do my car over the weekend of the 4th since I get Monday off. :)

I'm not implying that Dr G stole anything. from what I've read, clear coat is acrylic polymer based and old technology. I don't think Dr G reinvented the wheel here. After all Pearl Glo is $2 acrylic polymer technology that has an ammonia smell. I read posts years ago where detailers were playing around with wipe on clear coats-or at least that's how they described them.

If this is some breakthrough technology Dr G could discredit me by posting a patent number. I don't work in the industry, I don't know crap, just what I read. Maybe I'm completely wrong:confused:

Actually, when someone claimed that Dr G told them he added ammonia to OC. Whether they misunderstood has never been clarified by Dr G.

I stopped reading after that first sentence, and I hope others would do the same.

Really, really getting ridiculous with you and your wild *** speculation. Enough already.

Dude, just STOP. You don't have an effin' clue what is in Opti-Coat...none whatsoever. The most you know is that a product you will never see in person MIGHT have a smell reminiscent of ammonia. Please go back to your floor wax thread. Dr. G doesn't need to post anything to discredit you, I think that issue has been thoroughly taken care of. (sorry about the DP)

I find that you do have to be careful not to store the syringe with the nozzle facing up as what little air trapped inside the syringe will accumulate at the nozzle and the OC can start to harden a little in that area. Best to store it nozzle faced down.

I have been away from the forums for a while, and this thread was e-mailed to me by a friend.

An observation about OC(and frankly all we need to know)

It works!

Now for those who crave more info........

It lasts

It more than lives up to the hype.

Who cars if it contains amonia, and what difference does it possibly make if it did, all you need to know is that it works.

It can be painted over, I have many experiences doing so, have tested it with both solvent and waterbased paints, no issue what so ever.

It requires abrasion to remove it(any chemical that removes it also removes the clear coat and/or paint on the car.

If applied without following the instructions(like many things in life) it requires much additional work to correct it, hence my thoughts for needing a waiver, David is a smart business person, it,s cheaper and more responsible to prevent than it is to heal.

Does wonders on older clear bra products.
pptapess1.jpg

The surface needs to be in the condition you wish it to remain in before applying the product.

I have been using it for a long time now(I was one of the testers, and responsible for the syringe packaging), it lasts, it does everything David said it would and more. Like many others have stated if you have any questions give David a call, he answers his phone, is polite, knowledgeable, and knows his stuff.

Maybe Dr G should reappear and apologize to me. I have never been personally attacked or denigrated by anyone else in the industry for posting my comments. I don't think it was classy on his part. It says a lot when he won't clarify what he said to one of his customers. I've given him a chance to say that someone misunderstood him. But that doesn't seem to be the case. His silence is less than golden.

And I think I read somewhere that clear nail polish is now acrylic polymer based as well.

Please. Everyone else here sees right through you. Your whole intention has been to knock a product you haven't tried and to insinuate that Dr. G is making products in a bathtub using knowledge from his former employer that he might not rightfully own, or that he uses old or common technology to make something others have been doing for years or cheaper. You aren't going to ever buy any of his products and he doesn't owe you jack.

i've spoken to DR.G on a few occasions when his products first came out and he was very nice, informative, and a pleasure to talk with... :)

Contrary to your assertion that you will admit publicly when you are wrong, you seem like one of those people who, when confronted with their error, just keep sputtering out excuses and diversions to keep from having to admit they stated something foolish. You've trotted out such a laundry list of ridiculous "points" and veiled accusations...what is this latest one, that Opti-Coat is relabeled nail polish? Dude, you are so "classy". If I were Dr. G or Sal I wouldn't dignify you with a response, either. No one knows everything, but then there are the people who don't even know enough to realize that some people know more than they do.

Where is that smiley...oh, here it is: :tribe:

EDIT: I used to think I knew everything...when I was 18. As MDRX8 says in his sig...the more I learn the less I know, or more accurately, the more I learn the more I realize the less I know, OR, in the words of Bob Dylan "I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now".
