need recommendation: spray on drying aid - slick detail spray or spray wax?

Yea if you take a look at the 1z video, you will see lackfinish(spruhwax) being applied to a wet car, then re-rinsed. Cool stuff. Definitely underrated.

During drying, I like Griots Spray Wax, it was designed to be used while drying. Gives a nice shine and no streaks.

For spray detailing I use FK425, although Im using the new 303 detailer on my DD right now that I bought on BOGO. I dont like it as much as FK425 on the paint but I like that it can be used as a window cleaner as well.

KneeDragr- Is the Griot's Spray Wax as idiot-proof as their SpeedShine or can it streak/etc.?

I dont like SpeedShine as much as some other detailers, so from my point of view I like it better than SpeedShine.

Ive never had their Spray On Wax streak when applying it like directed, to a damp but not quite dry car and wiped off together with the remaining water.

BTW, if you do like SpeedShine its super cheap on AutoGeek right now, 24$ for a 128oz refill, thats like 3$ for a normal 16oz bottle of detailer!

KneeDragr- Thanks for the reply, and yeah, I'll probably be buying gallons of various products while that sale is running :D

Okay, I gave FK 146 a try this morning. Initial impressions are really good. I used it on the Roush which just had a little road grime/dust on it, but no bugs. The product was easy to use with a little longer work time than some other QD's, and it left the surface ultra shiny and smooth. Slickness is good but not great. The product reminds me a lot of a spray version of QEW (if anyone else remembers that stuff).

I also picked up a bottle of 425 and noticed right away that the old familiar smell was gone and the new one has a slightly unpleasant scent. I haven't used it yet, though.

I forgot about the Griot's Spray Wax. That's a great product!

EDIT--

I had a chance to use the 425 this morning. I hadn't driven the car since I used the 146 yesterday morning. It worked flawlessly and didn't leave any residue as the 425 I tried out several years ago. Also, the scent was not unpleasant while actually using it. It left the finish much slicker and it's a very bright, clean and clear look. I love it! My base coat is a few week old application of Adam's Buttery Wax.

BlackSunshine- As always, I appreciate your take on these QDs! Huh, never thought of QEW when using the FK146

Sorry to hear they changed the scent of the FK425 :(

So you currently have FK425 on top of the FK146, right?

If you ever use FK146 by itself, I'll be interested to hear how it "wears" for you. Mine lasts an awfully long time and beads/sheds like crazy.

The scent seemed a little foul just smelling it out of the bottle, but when I was using it, I didn't find it offensive at all.

I did top the 146 because I just can't leave well enough alone and I was bored this morning :)

How is the 425 on glass in your experience?

Just finished FK146ing the Crown Vic. Gave it a quickie with ZAIO yesterday and wanted a little something more on it.

No real issues, no smeary mess or anything like that. But to be honest I'm not a big fan of QDing glass, in part because I clean it almost daily, so I might not be the best guy to ask. But OTOH, if it works OK for me then it oughta work fine for most anybody.

I used Griot's Spray Wax while drying after washing my wife's car today. I have to say it may just have passed Optimum QID for my new drying aid. Added an outstanding shine and plenty of lubrication. No streaking issues what so ever.

Ah, thanks for posting your take on the stuff. Hmmm....

Ugh... why did they have to mess with 425... I have a gut feeling FK is not going to be around forever. Seems like no investment to promote the product at all.

Alright, off to the store to add that one to the shelves!

They don't need to, the solid products are proven and really they have huge followings that are just under the detail "forum" radar.

Case and point - just the other day a guy calls from a Helicopter maintenance place looking for 15 gallons of 146, they LOVE the stuff.

Meguiar's UQW works well as a drying aid. I especially like it on glass because it prevents MF linting. Most good QD's will perform similarly, but UQW adds more gloss and protection, IME.

I notice 425 plays great with the FK sealants and most of the Meguiars sealants, but *sometimes* can act a fool with some carnaubas - certainly the luxury oily ones, not so much the solventy waxes.

What I always will use M34 is a post polishing wash drying aid, I just dry the car and use M34 to assist - that way I can safely go right to anything I am topping with.

Yeah, 425 is definitely finicky when used with oily carnaubas (especially Vintage). Using 425 on (most) sealants and (most) solventy waxes is quick and easy, with no worries about streaking. With the oily carnaubas, it takes a lot more care to avoid streaky areas. It's worth doing it, however, as the anti-static effect of 425 works well on 'nubas.

I'm not questioning the quality of the products. I'm pointing out that they have one place to order them from at the consumer level, no new product development and no advertising. I think that makes for shaky ground.

Well, maybe the changes (unwelcome as they might be) to FK425 actually indicate ongoing product development :nixweiss I bet FK has lots of big accounts that help keep the lights on, just like other under-the-radar product lines (e.g., ProWax is still around).

I sure hope so. If anything happened to them, the hoarding of their products would turn ugly.

Alright well I now have Adam's detail spray, onr, 3D final touch, Griots speed shine, griots spray wax, duragloss aquawax, pinnacle spray souveran, megs ultimate quick detailer, and FK425. Surely one of these will turn out to be "the one!"
