If you were forced to use OTC products...

Biggest BS of all time.

THANK YOU !!!

Geez, ever heard of Megs (great polishes, car wash, QD), 3M (polishes), Viking and vroom MFs,and of course Duragloss just name a few! I dare people to compare these to top end boutique products. BS is the only word for it.

I think most Megs stuff is awesome. I really like NXT. I think it looks awesome and it's so easy to use. ColorX is awesome stuff. Hotshine is what I use on most tires. Mothers has a great lineup as well. Not only are their polishes and waxes great, but they have the powerball which has saved me HOURS of time on my polished aluminum wheels.

I support both boutique and OTC products - Unfortunately, I feel that several detailers shy away from OTC because of their perceived lack of "exoticness" or "performance". I will admit that there is a bunch of OTC crap but there is definitely some above average stuff available from local stores:

Meguiar's ColorX, NXT wash, Gold Class wash, #16 (if you can still find it)

Mother's Reflections and FX lineup (especially the tire shine and spray wax)

S100

Armor-All Original

The object is to get the results that you want, whether it over the counter or boutique. There are many otc products that are as good as boutique, if not better. Other then Zaino, Klasse, and Poorboys products , everything else can be matched with otc.

There are always Autobody paint and Detailer suppliers in town...

That's what I was thinking. OTC takes on a whole new dimension when you go to a store that specializes in the kind of products under discussion, and they sure don't cost *more* than "consumer level" products, they often cost less. When I was a teenager the only way I could afford good detailing stuff was to shop for "professional" products at shops like that.

My local department/auto parts stores have a *very* limited selection of certain types of products, especially (abrasive) polishes and LSPs. But the autobody/paint supply places have dozens of them, and can order stuff from Pro, Meguiar's, 3M, etc. No biggie for them, they place orders with these companies all the time anyhow.

Not saying there aren't good non-professional products, just that you can greatly expand your options by shopping at the right places, and often save money at the same time. And it's a pretty fine line between "OTC"/"consumer" stuff and "professional" products...e.g., Meguair's #26, #21, and especially good old #16, which is labeled "Professional Paste Wax".

im a firm belever in the saying "its the person not the product" granted there are some expencive products that simply work/look better than the cheeper OTC counterparts, but i think for the most part its the way they are used

i can say i've tried almost everything from megs professional line and i hate everything i've tried.

Can you name some specific items from Megs and explain your technique and results?

There have been several posts shooting down the Meguiar's line of products. I'm not here to defend them either. I use some of their products occasionally. That said, if I were not able to get a vehicle to have a very respectable, lasting shine with the wide variety of Meguiar's products available then I would be concerned. My concern wouldn't be with this line of products but with my ability as detailer to use them. Meguiar's may not be the easiest products to use, it may not be the longest lasting line of products available, it isn't necessarily the first brand of products that I reach for and they may not be the most cost effective product line to use. However, I certainly can find something in their myriad of products to get about any detailing job done well. Saying they don't have any products of value or worth liking is either snobbery or simply short sighted. Obviously your results may vary. :nixweiss

One would have to assume that your technique isn't proper with the Megs products as I have seen first hand and on this forum the results of many excellent details using Megs products. Scottwax, who I think is one of the best detailers on here has shown outstanding results of many details using Megs products and they typical are right up there at the top. I would agree with whoever said that process is the main ingredient in a top notch detail

Mobile detailer extrodinare Superior Shine uses ONLY Meguiars products on all of his details. Have you seen some of the stuff he has done? Much respect.

I WILL NOT discuss MEGUIRES products as i know about how there inside works and i was banned for speaking the truth about there products that they dont want consumers to know.

that is why i havent replyd to any of the replys since my first post on page 1

Check out Mark-V products, they are the best detailing products on the market. All of their products are extremely strong, and highly diluteable. www.mark-v.com - I'm not saying that Zaino doesn't make a decent product, and Zymol makes some of the best waxes like the Vintage, and the Concourse, but are extremely expensive. As far as cleaning agents though, you need to let the chemicals do the work, and if you're using the right chemicals you won't have to work as hard. Meguiar's just makes weak chemicals that's all. I didn't mean to offend anyone.
