Detailed: 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I agree. . .getting a speeding ticket is NOT fun. . .especially if you're caught speeding down the 5 freeway in the middle of nowhere and you're 150 miles from home . . .

My friend got a speeding ticket while in vegas and had to go back there for court (she lives in LA).



The fastest I've driven was never in my car but in my (other) friend's car. . .we were 19, driving on the 5 freeway at 2AM in the morning trying to get back from LA to Davis for our midterms the next day. I hit 120 mph on her Audi A4 . . I don't think that was the top speed but I was too afraid to go any higher!



Since then, gas was so expensive and so precious that I tried to stay at the speed limit to get maximum mpg. That and it's hard to drive top speeds in LA. . .cops are everywhere! But I think the highest i've gotten in my car was 95 hehe, not very high but I'm not wasting my money and time on a speeding ticket!

In Los Angeles. . .it's hard to hit top speeds because cops are everywhere. And it is so true when you say that speeding tickets aren't worth it. . .you're just wasting gas (this is my mentality after premium fuel hit $5+), money and time!

I would say that my investment of a K40 P2000 was weel worth it. Typically travel at speeds that are 5-10 mph above the posted speed limits. Now when I am on the expressway, turnpike, or my fav I-76 in Penn, I have hit speeds of 130+. I have not made a habit of it, but sometimes your on these roads with slight turns and you get flashbacks of playing crusing the world arcade games... haha, guess I am showing my young age on that one, but I start pumping music and somebody starts to play around on the road and I'm game. Realistically I don't like to travel more than 100 mph because of the associated risk of being a freaking maniac and driving at 2x the legal speed limit. I don't want to lose my license! Luckily I have never recieved a moving violation, but I have the k40 to thank for that! BTW if you like to drive fast and don't have that, I highly suggest it. And purchase the Laser diffuser as well. I just avoided 90 in a 65 thanks to that baby! I know for a fact it works and I would never have a car without it from now on. Great thread topic!

IMO you're *very* lucky you got away with that. Every LEO I know (and also some who post on these boards) woulda pulled you over on a "visual" and let the actual speed get sorted out in court.



(Note that the above is by no means intended as a :nono regarding 90 in a 65 ;) )

In that particular situation I was on the NJ turnpike and in my very favorite slow lane, and I wasnt passing on the right (just in case this comment causes issues.. haha). I am one who likes to follow the motto "left lane to pass otherwise get in the slow lane", maintain speed till I am nearing a car, then hop in the left and repeat... There were multiple cars going similar speeds that day and thanks to my method of maintaining the right lane except to pass, I had enough time to react as others passed and have no issue. Now with what you said, I did have one time where I was the only car on the road, got zapped with the laser, slowed down, but got hit with radar, and the cop wasn't happy that I was 15 over when he got me, but thank god it was a speed trap and I wasnt from the area... The officer luckily let me off that time, but that was 2 years ago, and I try to avoid unfamiliar roads when pushing the limit. Although the speeds have gotten rediculous at times, my gf has convinced me to slow down in recent years.. guess she wants me to stick around...haha. Well one thing we have in the UK is virtually no speed cops, we just have speed cameras and the positions have to be posted on the police departments web sites.



I do over 30k a year and regularlly drive to Glasgow from Manchester in 3 hours. Thats averaging 90mph for the trip.



I can do easily Manchester to Aberdeen in 5 hours (360 miles) including stop for breakfast. When we were in the states in May at the brother house in Placerville we drove to Medford in Oregon, similar distance, it took us over 8 hours as there were cops everywhere, so we stuck to 70mph. Boring or what.



The biggest direrence though is in MPG. My car here does over 50mpg, plus it's a big Volvo V70 with an auto box; but it is a 2.0L Turbo Diesel. My brothers car is a GMC Sierra V8 Truck that does 11 mpg, jeez that thing cost me a fortune to fill up every 300 miles. My motor can do 600 miles on 10 gallons of Diesel. The wifes car is a new VW Golf and it returns 70+mpg.
 
MCWD- Sounds like you weren't doing anything to have the LEOs get all ticked off at you (and/or he was reasonable or lazy in the first incance and just a nice guy in the second :D ).



Heh heh, sounds like your GF is like most. Only comment I can recall my wife *ever* making about this stuff was the one time when she asked why I backed off at 138 instead of hitting an even 140.



Awsomeshine- That's interesting, especially about the camera locations being posted. Yeah, I bet driving over here was a drag, between the low limits, the police presence, and the wrong-side-of-the-road thing.
 
Just went on a little expedition up to some twisties with a few friends today. Good fun. It really doesn't take a special set-up to have fun. We pushed our cars to just about the limit and had fun doing it. All I'll say is that we did about 30 over, everywhere.

I'd imagine that being caught speeding anything over 100 MPH will automatically get you slammed over the hood and cuffed.



I don't do anything over 80 for the simple fact that with 190,000 miles on my car, I'd likely see parts start flying off if I went that fast (or have some kind of mechanical breakdown which could be fatal at higher speeds). Great stories though.

Yeah, that's what usually happens- right into custody if you're 100 or over. Even the nineties can be touchy depending on the LEO and the situation.



If the incarceration isn't worrisome enough, Autopians might want to consider the potential damage to the vehicle that could easily result from the towing/impounding.
 
I don't mess with speeding on the street (at least till I get a V1 :)). But I was stupid at times. I have gone 110 in a 65.



I also went 93 in a 65 and got pulled over being clocked at 93 and he let me off with a warning. Here in Columbus, I believe it's 30mph over the speed limit and you get wreckless driving and car gets towed.
 
In Virginia, reckless driving is a misdemeanor. I actually got clocked doing 83 MPH on I-81 (which is reckless) a few years ago but the officer gave me a break and knocked it down to regular speeding. I'd hate to have a criminal record follow me around just for speeding. Bad law IMHO.
 
Just thought I should make it clear I don't make speeding a habit. Although I did get up over a hundred with my buddies 600AWHP Evo VIII when I detailed it, but it had a laser jammer. Talk about a confused cop lol.

Yeah, it's something like "more than 20 over" but I'm not certain. Seems like the LEO has some leeway about how he/she has to write it up though. Accumulatorette just got a regular ticket for 90-some in a 60 and I've never been cited for reckless op.



I dunno if it's a bad law..IMO most people are pretty awful drivers with no real training in how to drive properly; things are OK until something unexpected happens and then those extra mph result in serious injury. At ~30 over stuff is happening pretty fast; that's adding what?...about 45 extra feet-per-second to any given situation..and a lot of people take 2 seconds or more to react/respond and even then they do the wrong thing.



I can live with the law...but it *would* be a hassle to have to go to court and prove I wasn't being reckless (which I'm confident I could do successfully).

That's hard to believe, a lot of people do 80-85 on the freeway in Michigan, myself included. Not that cops won't write you for that, but I can't believe it's reckless.



Actually under some circumstances I don't feel 100+ is reckless. Biggest problem I see is I don't want to encourage someone who doesn't have the skills to drive that fast to do it. Overall, the biggest danger is to my license, not my safety, IMO. The German Autobahn has as good a safety record as out Interstates. Their driver training is more thorough however.

186,000 on my daily driver now. Preventive maintenance and synthetic oil are my friends, and I don't skimp on tires even though the car is old and not worth much money. For safety reasons it's worth it.
