What do you do when terrorists turn from attacking well-protected government buildings and transportation centers in favor of anyplace that people may congregate? Specifically, how do you address bloody scenarios like the assault on the Westgate mall in Nairobi, Kenya by the Islamist group al-Shabaab, which killed at least 61 civilians? Well, the Secretary General of Interpol, the international police-coordination organization, says you either start providing “extraordinary security” perimeters around anything that might be a target, or else let people carry the means to defend themselves. Surprisingly, he seems to lean toward empowering individuals to take responsibility for their own defense.
In an interview with ABC News, Interpol Secretary General Ronald K. Noble said:

“Societies have to think about how they’re going to approach the problem,” Noble said. “One is to say we want an armed citizenry; you can see the reason for that. Another is to say the enclaves are so secure that in order to get into the soft target you’re going to have to pass through extraordinary security.”

“Enclaves” translates as “any place people gather,” which could be a mall, a theater, a supermarket, a town square… That’s an awful lot of secure perimeters to set up. No doubt, plenty of police unions and politically well-connected private security companies would love to see that effort made, but are you really going to throw a cordon up every time a few people gather to chat about the weather or have a barbecue? Unusually for a government official (he was the Undersecretary for Enforcement of the United States Department of the Treasury, in charge of the Secret Service as well as the ATF), Noble obviously sees that as a bit of a daunting challenge. He adds:

“Ask yourself: If that was Denver, Col., if that was Texas, would those guys have been able to spend hours, days, shooting people randomly?” Noble said, referring to states with pro-gun traditions. “What I’m saying is it makes police around the world question their views on gun control. It makes citizens question their views on gun control. You have to ask yourself, ‘Is an armed citizenry more necessary now than it was in the past with an evolving threat of terrorism?’ This is something that has to be discussed.”

“For me it’s a profound question,” he continued. “People are quick to say ‘gun control, people shouldn’t be armed,’ etc., etc. I think they have to ask themselves: ‘Where would you have wanted to be? In a city where there was gun control and no citizens armed if you’re in a Westgate mall, or in a place like Denver or Texas?'”

That might be why. Bullet capacity doesn't make up for lack of brain capacity.

Care to look up how many Americans were shot by licensed/trained/vetted Americans illegally? Then there might be a statistic to talk about.

Belgian Muslims are happy with the attack on the French. They state an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. So they condone killing innocent civilians. What a disgrace. Put a X on the map and wipe those idiots out also. At least when the coalition is killing it is directed at terrorist.

Im so glad that the Military taught me to always be looking around you for anything that was unusual, that didnt match, that had anything to do with a weapon sticking out - even from someone's body or clothing.
I learned to look at people and size them up for their threat factor, size them up if I had to do something to remove them or remove them from me or my family...

Yes, it is much harder to do something like this in the crowded streets of NYC, etc., but I dont live there, so I can have a little more space depending on where I put myself or my grandkids, etc.,....

Im thinking that if no one in Government can even raise a feeble hand to try to help this Nation and all other Nations that are under any kind of attack from these cowardly, girly-men wearing black dresses, then Heck Yeah, I am going to take steps to insure that if a coward raises up an AK in any direction, a quick chest or head shot is going to take them out...

And if enough good, sensible, God fearing, normal citizens decide to take the time to get the gun control classes, get lots of practice at the range, get the concealed permit, then perhaps - notice I said Perhaps - this might slow down the idea that this scourge to humanity can get a grip in ANY Free Country....

You can say all you want about guns, gun control, collateral damage, emotional damage, guilty feelings, etc., but as long as the Bad Guys, have all the dang guns, ammo, bombs, bomb clothing, etc., and they are NOT going to obey any LAWS, then we as Stake Holders of the Country, better be thinking that someone has to pick up the slack when Law Enforcement is not available..

Remember that one jet on 09/11 that crashed into an empty field in PA ? It has been speculated that the passengers decided that no little screaming, hairy, girly-man with a dang box cutter was going to scare them enough to allow that to happen so they got up, knowing they were going to die anyway, and changed that airplane course..

There was a lady on that flight - an Attorney for BMW - who was flying back to California with her daughter that had come up to visit...
BMW said that if there was ever a woman that knew how to work on Bimmers, knew all their history, could work men under the table, was absolutely fearless, but kind, this was that woman, and she was a passenger on that flight..
BMW said that she probably had something to do with that airplane not fulfilling its deadly mission and I believe this to be true..

It only takes 1 person - 1 brave person - 1 person to change history...

In the Bible, we can read about 1 man, 1 prophet of God that moved mountains, caused the sun to not move from its place in the sky, bring fire down from the sky to light a water soaked sacrifice, and many more absolute miracles...

I have always known that if Im on an airplane and some nitwit decides to try to change the flying conditions or the flight in any way shape or form, that nitwit/s is/are going to get knocked out...
There are not enough Air Marshals to be on every flight, so what are you supposed to do ?? Cower down and cry like a baby?
And if something happens to me in the process, someone will come up behind me and finish it...

We need to do what they are doing to us - study their tactics, study up on what they like to use as weapons, and learn all about them, their strengths, weaknesses, where the safety is, can you tell if its On or Off, etc...

Pretty soon, with enough practice and study, it will become second nature, some parts of it need to be worked on periodically, and when not, always in the back of your head...

That's profiling. A "no-no" in Obama's US. With about 200 Generals having been removed by Obama, I'm sure even the military can't do it anymore.

I'm really grateful for my dad teaching me stuff like this when I was younger. He would always tell me and test me to observe my surroundings. Something he taught me that would apply to this Paris tragedy, is he always sits at a restaurant facing the entrance. He would tell me he always wants to see who's coming in...just in case. Preferably he would always request for a table in view of his car too. I like to think if my dad was in one of those small cafes that night, it would have been a much shorter night for the attackers.

I believe it would have been shorter, at least for the guy at the café. His weapon jammed (ak's are known for that), so someone with the training, knowledge, and courage IMHO would have used that as an opportunity to neutralize the bad guy.
 
Just no substitute for some things:

-Situational Awareness
-Well thought-out (in advance) responses to things not being right

I hope *everybody* here has this sort of thing worked out with their Significant Other/kids/etc. A "code word"/emergency signal might sound corny, but ..."excuse me honey, hey kids...listen up, I think there's a guy here to kill us so let's figure out what to do" won't cut it. What's that rule-of-thumb...you gotta TCB in under two seconds or you're probably a statistic.

I dunno, I'd consider an AK to be pretty *unlikely* to malfunction, can't remember the last time I've seen one go inop. [Freakin'] Timex of a weapon IME.

But yeah...in most Active Shooter situations there *will* be a window of opportunity, so why just sit there and wait to die? But a Suicide bomber? Maybe not so much, but still..spotting a "likely" and trying to do something about it could go a long way. People are always saying "they couldn't BELIEVE it was happening!" and I alway wonder "why the [expletive] not?"
