The Unofficial *Official* Politics Thread

Im with you on theory for this one, as the application of lobbying and such has been taken to the extreme.

However, I can see the value in the lobbies as well. In its “purest” form, it can serve to get issues to the attention of the representative in an efficient manner, providing (sorta) an organized “one voice” for that specific issue.

The system needs a lot of work, that’s for sure. As I said earlier, it’s been ```````ized benefiting the most money, not the most importance.

Besides term limits, there needs to be major campaign finance reform: I.e put an end to lobbyists. Elected officials need to vote in the interest of their constituents, not for who’s interest gave their campaign the most money.

No reason lobbyist organizations can’t pay for tv ads just like politicians do currently. Influence the public to put pressure on politicians. Isn’t that how it’s supposed to be?

A lot of this would be fixed if the 17th Amendment was abolished and State Legislators appointed Senators instead of electing them by popular vote. That way they are held to account to the State they represent and not the party affiliation.

that won`t work and is not fair
in PA which typically goes dem (went repub this year <1% we have a legislature 65% repub due to gerrymandering
we would have 2 repub senators vs the 1/1 we have
red states that are small and often have 1/1 would always be 2/0 and the balance of the senate would be fixed forever
smaller red states would have inordinate power

what we need is term limits
that would never happen, been declared unconstitutional and would require an amendment
iirc 2/3 of the states with 2/3 of their state legislature PLUS 2/3 of congress

19 states have 2 repub
17 2 dems
12 are dem/repub 1/1, 8 would go repub and 4 dem
so instead of dem/repub 12/12 it would go repub 16 and dem 8, a swing of 8
2 indep, 1 demindy and 1 repub/indy they likely go to 2 dem and 2 repub
56 / 44 repub/dem with little chance of change

On what ground are term limits unconstitutional if they are in place for presidents?

its an amendment, the 22nd

in the mid 90`s the scotus determined term limits for senators, etc, unconstitutional
not enumerated in the constitution
need an amendment

As the days pass and more things come to light, it appears that there needs to be a serious look at what happens when we want to look the other way.

https://theconservativetreehouse.com/2018/02/24/policy-and-consequence-broward-county-sheriff-union-president-notes-promise-program-and-consequences/

These policies, mostly based on liberal thought that the justice system is racist and unproportionately goes after people of color, is what seems to be treating these kids with kid gloves.

Just spoke to a drill instructor yesterday who brought his car in from a local base. He can no longer get in the face of these young men who may one day go into battle. He can be written up if he uses foul language or if a cadet feels he is being picked on. Seems everyone allowed this kid to fall thru some horrible cracks.

Tell me where I am wrong.

quit judging, if I didn`t know better I would think you are `elevating` your beliefs above those of others, like an `elitist` ;)

Hello artm3,

I find it hypocritical to state to me, "quit judging" as you go on to "judge" me as one who "elevates" my "beliefs above those of others, like an elitist". Don`t you find that as such?

Also, my post was based on things that, as far as I have researched, are factucal. There are programs in place to look the other way. This seems to have happened with the Florida shooter. The system put in place failed. The NRA did not fail these kids as they did not put together this program, as far as I know. The shooter, again as far as I know, was not an NRA member.

President Obama and Eric Holder seemed to push for this program. Does this mean they are at fault? Nope, they didn`t shoot those kids. What has happened though is they may have put a program in place that allowed this kid to slip thru and that`s a tragedy.

Is the question, "Is it illegal or legal to rape your wife?" or is it better asked, "Is it ethical (moral) to rape your wife?"

Morally it is wrong to rape an unknown woman, let alone your wife. It is wrong, morally, to murder another. We do not need written laws to know that. Thus, morally, if a husband would "rape" his wife then he never loved her and never understood his vows.

Kids pick on each other. Always have, it’s part of growing up. It used to be, if you were upset about it you’d be told to be above it and not let it bother you. “Sticks and Stones” and all that. Somewhere, that stopped. After columbine, we blame the bullies. Kids don’t have to be tough anymore because they can blame the bullies. They can shoot up their school and society will blame the bullies. What happened to “screw em, don’t worry about it” and just move forward? This society has an excuse for everything anymore and it’s flat out embarrassing.

I came up in my career in one extremely notable world class kitchen. Think the marine corps of cooks. We got berated daily. You got better or you left. Wanna be treated like a grown man, then work and act like one. Until then, deal with it. Participation trophies and being told your best effort is good enough, even if it sucked, is ruining this country.

What gets me, is somewhere along the lines people started actually believing all this nonsense. I went to a very small catholic school growing up. Our basketball team was terrible. We lost all but 1 game per year, and lost badly. At the end of the season, our coach gave us trophies that said “winning is giving your all.” Even at 8 years old I recognized that as complete garbage.

Where did America decide to get so soft? Btw, I have no idea what your response has to do with what’s been discussed. And yeah, things change but this paradigm shift hasn’t changed anything for the better. Kids eat laundry detergent these days. Kids are shooting their peers at school. Drug use is up. Divorce rate is up, etc. So are you really gonna tell me that it’s a good thing to tell kids that losing is no different than winning, if a teacher is too tough you can complain, nobody can tell you you’re wrong just do what you want, and that nobody is allowed to hurt your feelings and the result of all that is GOOD for society? You’re gonna tell me that’s the same as outlawing rape?

JRock645 ------ Loved that story... Especially the Marine Corps part... You learned, worked hard, learned how to work under pressure, took challenges head on, utilized inner strength and determination that you were not going to fail..
You went to a Parochial School..
Parents loved you guys..
See how good you turned out ???

I grew up working as a small boy.. We were very poor after my Dad became an unpaid Minister..
But you know, I learned a lot before and after that happened, and am grateful today all the hard parts..
They all combined to help polish me to be what I am today..
My parents taught us the Golden Rule and a lot more from the Scriptures..

No one was over indulged, spoiled, etc.., all 5 of us kids had to work, and give all the money to our dear Mother..

We learned to ALWAYS RESPECT Our ELDERS.... No excuses for not doing this...
It was really just common courtesy...Everyone grew up this way...

Dad had the last word and you hoped that Mother forgot to tell him something you did that day that made her angry.. :)
We KNEW, absolutely KNEW, our Parents and our Siblings loved us, loved each other...
We were in Church every Sunday, Wednesday, and Saturday to clean it all up for Sunday..

At elementary school back then, if a kid Bullied you, you met him after school behind the big brick incinerator and beat the crap out of him and he never Bullied you again...
Problem solved, no issues, no "Im gonna get a gun and shoot up the school" BS.. We just took care of each other and that was that.. The Bully stopped being one and eventually you were friends again...

Now, I just hear today from a good friend who is taking care of an aged Mother for a Family that the little 2-year old boy who lives there gets really angry if everyone does NOT applaud when he makes a basket... One must acknowledge his achievement EVERY TIME or he blows a head gasket...
Sad.... Hope he grows out of it, or he will be one of those people who throws their Silver Olympic Medal into the crowd, because it wasn`t a Gold Medal....

Yes, Mi Hermano, there is and has been a real course change from when you and I grew up..

Parents tell their kids, "Winning and being first is not important" then they turn around and say, "Oh damn it! How did my team lose that game?!?"

Totally agree and have witnessed that very behavior many times at kids games..

What ever happened to playing sports for the enjoyment of just playing sports ??? No worries about winning, no pressure to perform perfectly...
We played because we enjoyed the game, enjoyed each other, and saw each other get better sometimes from all those days of throwing the softball as far as you could, etc...

I agree Anthony. Why on earth do we need laws protecting women who have been forcefully raped by their husbands? If it were up to me, the husband should be able to say 10 Hail Mary`s & all is forgiven.
