Soooo who wants to train for a 5K with me?

So I need to get back in shape somethin terrible. With our busy schedule and having kids I need a little extra motivation, so my wife and I are going to do a 5K and start out using C25k Couch to 5k - C25K Running Program Basically it's a program to get you off your couch and to the point of being able to run 5k in 8-9 weeks. Download the app on your phone and it literally tells you what to do and when to do it.

I thought it could be fun/helpful to do it with other people. With that program you can track yourself and share your progress. If I get enough interest I may start a facebook group, but if nothing else it could be helpful to keep eachother accountable and motivated on here.

Planning on starting Sunday (first week is only 3 days for just 30 minutes/day). Anybody up for it?

I'll follow behind you in a golf cart singing Eye of the Tiger.

Funny I just saw this thread. I ran 6 miles ONCE when I was in the best shape of my life 5 years ago. I haven't run since... My team at work decided to do a 6k next week and I was like why not. Getting a little nervous now that it's getting closer. Still haven't ran yet 😴😟

Minus the cardiovascular benefits of course

That's what detailing is for

Can't run anymore my knees don't like it, comes from running marathons in my twenties..after a few injuries I took up bicycle riding, that turned into racing...today at 60 I ride 5 days a week and cover 180 miles a week. Pic was taken a few months back after I came in from riding
Keep up the good fight it's worth it! View attachment 27640

How can you say this when you've blown your knees out?

I say kick back, relax and let the Plastic Surgeons fix it

Ahhhh, that felt good. Went for my first run this morning. Wanted to get a couple "practice runs" in to get going and get familiar with the program. I'm not a morning person AT ALL, but by the end of the run I was already glad I got up and did it. Super pumped to get going. Did a weigh in after my run.....

Oof.....goal is to be down to 194 by July 25 at the end of the 8 weeks. 1.25 lbs./week should be totally doable

You can totally do a 5k....or much longer if you want. I started running so that I could run with my wife....did a 5k as my first race and was so nervous. After almost two years of running, I ran the NYC marathon this past November. When I started I couldn't run 1/4 mile without being doubled over coughing. Running a race will get you hooked!

Yeah, 5k isn't much. Few years ago I did the Warrior Dash which is essentially a 5k with obstacles. Got to talkin with a buddy of mine yesterday and decided we're gonna do the Tough Mudder next year. That'll be a good tough goal to train for and make sure I keep at it through the winter

no pounding pressure with cycling that you get with running..

Heh heh, I'm not gonna mess up *my* knees or anything else. I do my cardio on the AirDyne and the StairMaster (which oddly enough doesn't bother my knees/hips/anything even after all these years on it).

I still don't buy the "get lean by burning calories doing endurance work" argument, but hey if it works for somebody else then more power to them.

Find something you like, that you can do indefinitely, and do it. Keep doing it. It's not about looks, it's about not living a compromised existance. I know people my age (55) who can't do stuff that they did when they were younger...it's sad. A pal and his wife had liposuction, yeah they look leaner, but they're still out of shape and have trouble doing some activities.

Little update. Things got a little bit of a late start due to vacation (and forgetting my running shoes). Got serious a little over 2 weeks ago starting June 28. My neighbor across the street used to body build, but shifted his focus to power lifting because he got sick of dieting. Knows his stuff though. He wrote me up a diet that I've tried to stick to (things went to hell over the weekend of the 4th lol). Started out at 204.2 on the 28th. This morning after my run I weighed in at 197.4. Completed week 4 day 2 of the c25k program. Felt like hot garbage this morning running, but my distance has been increasing each week, so progress is being made. Fell .07 miles short of hitting 3 miles this morning. Should be able to hit it next time out.

Keep up the good work. Running is definitely addicting. For years I toyed with it off-and-on. Finally, about a year and a half ago, I set some specific goals, which I have since accomplished. Run a 10K, a half, and marathon. Through that, I became addicted. My next goal is to break a 20 minute 5K, which is a pretty big feat for me. I'm not (nor have I ever been) really fast, and I still lift weight 5-6 days a week. Run first thing in the mornings and lift at lunch in the company gym.

Regarding apps, I recommend the C25K to anyone who asks me about taking up the sport. It's a great little app and if you use it as intended, it's foolproof. Plus there's a follow up app, I believe to take you to 10K distance.

Just remember to do it for you, and as long as it makes you happy and you enjoy it keep on doing it.

That app really is fantastic. It's kept me from trying to do too much too soon which has held any injury off

House of Wax- Glad you're making progress. How much longer do you have?

On the diet, IMO you simply gotta go with something you can stay with forever. It's not all *that* hard to avoid both overeating and fattenng/junk food once you do some research.

For that matter, I believe in a training regimen that you can stick with forever too..so I hope you get over any kind of "feeling like hot garbage" as exercise (even very intense) oughta leave you feeling *better*.

I've got about another 12 pounds to go as far as weight loss and 4 weeks left on the C25K program.

The diet blows right now, but it's effective. Once I get down to my target weight I will re-evaluate my next goals and adjust my eating to more of a maintenance diet, i.e. expand the variety of foods I eat, but keep it clean and in portion controlled amounts.

As far as feeling like crap today, it was just matter of the day. Yesterday was a long HOT day at work and it was pretty warm and humid out this morning. The last time I ran I felt great. Pretty pleased though that even though I didn't feel as good today, I was able to push hard and beat my results the last time I ran

Yep. Everything I'm doing right now is to just hit my goal. I had a physical a few weeks ago and my blood work came back with pretty bad cholesterol readings, so this is a "rest of my life" change overall
