I was using one of my sheepskin mitts the otherday and noticed it was a bit heavy after using the mitt from my soap bucket, can the weight of the mitt alone cause marring?

Unless its five pounds I wouldn't worry about it.....Just make sure that you keep the mitt real clean....along with plenty of suds to keep it slipping across the surface.

I seriously doubt it. Although foam gun usage has eliminated my need for a wash bucket altogether, I've never had a concern about this. On the other hand, I do frequently switch to a fresh mitt.

I use two mitts one for the upper portion and a 2nd for the lower half of my car..i shake the mitt out in the rinse bucket and the let it sit on the edge of the bucket until im ready for soap. i don't like my mitt sitting in the bottom of the buckets. I was thinking if a light MF with a short nap can easily marr the paint could this happen with a sheepskin mitt saturated with soap and water..

There is always a chance of this happening but sounds like you are doing all the right things to keep this from happening.....I wash my mitt about every month depending on the time of the year, this is done in the washing machine to ensure that its as clean as possible....I also replace in once a year again depending on the amount of use it gets.

Thanks beemer it was a question that popped up the other day when washing.I'll try eating some Wheaties for breakfast this may be the reason the mitt felt liltle heavier ;) ..

Well how much of the weight of the mitt is on the car is completely up to you. You don't have to lay the full weight of the mitt on the paint. If you put your hand in the mitt (like I do) you can lift and just glide the mitt lightly over the paint. You know what I'm trying to say?

It may sound funny but that mitt feels and smells like a wet animal.i've used it both ways hand in and hand out the reason i use it without putting my hand in the mitt is because it isconvinient to flip the mitt on the surface of the paint. Does your mitt feel and smell the same when wet..

I use a thumb less mitt so it is no problem flipping the mitt.

As for the feel and smell of the mitt I find rinsing the mitt well after use and drying it inside out in the dryer prevents what you are talking about. Allowing the mitt to dry on it's own has always resulted in rot and this caused the smell you are talking about. Drying in the dryer has also increased the life of my mitts a least 12 fold. I used to get a month out of a mitt before it literally disintegrated but since I started drying in the dryer I get a year easy.

I doubt a sheepskin would cause marring unless it is really dirty.

I like the light ones from ExcelDetail the best. Be careful - many of the ones that sell for $16+ are terrible. In my experience there is an inverse correlation between price and performance.

I find there is no correlation at all. There are awesome inexpensive mitts and inexpensive mitts that are useless. There are expensive mitts that are excellent and some that are terrible. Very inconsistent from mitt to mitt no matter where I purchase. This is why I only purchase mitts I can see before hand. I never buy them on line.

Silverlexus,
I have some euro mitts from excel, euro from target i also own a nice plush $16.00 mitt from a sheepskin store by the house. this mitt is beautiful and plush other then this it is as soft as any of the mitts i've mention..

Anthony,
I have been rinsing the mitt when i finished and the let the mitt air dry in the basement because i was told to dry in this way.I'll try the dryer thing, also the mitt smells like a wet dog when wet this is the ordor i was referring too.

I was told to dry the same way you are and my mitts promptly desintigrated. I have many friends that dry them in the dryer and were getting much longer life spans with their mitts. I figured I had nothing to loose since air drying my mitts was not working. I started to dry them inside out in the dryer and problem solved. I no longer get that stink either. I'm sure it is caused by constantly wetting the mitt wet and letting it air dry. The leather will rot. Give the dryer a shot you have nothing to loose really, it's just a mitt and if doesn't work (and it will, never seen it fail yet) then go back to hang drying.

Start with a new mitt so you can get accurate results. Your current mitt sounds like it's already shot, the dryer wont help that mitt. Also make sure you dry it inside out then the leather gets fully dried. Then you can turn it back to normal and the furry side will dry in a few minutes if you put it back in the dryer.

That mitt has been used less then a 1/2 dzn times but i could do this because i have yet to designate one of the sheepskin mitts to the lower half of the car, i've been using a chenille mitt for that.

every new product and item has learning curves even down to my little old mitt. Thank Anthony ...

I definitely agree with Anthony -- every mitt has it's own unique feel. For me, I've always really liked the SM Arnold mitts as they seem to have consistant quality and consistant life spans (when used in a normal fashion). Again, as was mentioned, I utilize dedicated mitts for high and low body panels. Further, that mitt doesn't make it in the same bucket with my 'upper' body mitts... I used to get these mitts from Dwayne but, they weren't a hot button item and they went to the wayside... which I understand... Just wish I could've bought out the old stock before they vanished -- much like I did with all of the Eagle One Tire Swipes (I know... I know... goofy little item but, these things make tires simple -- I've even tossed them in for clients as a 'goodie' for using my services).

In response to the original question -- I find that the more solution (soap water) that the mitt holds, the more tendency I have to use my arm strength (albeit it wimpy) to hold the mitt rather than letting it drag with all of it's gravity force on the paint. This way I gradually allow the solution within the mitt to come out on to the paint as I'm cleaning the vehicle panel by panel with the two or three bucket system (although, I may have to try this foam gun idea as I'm reading more and more about them)...

RP :D

So where do I find the best mitts? thumbless makes sence to me but who has the best quality wash mitts?

I recently ordered from sheepskin.com and have been very happy with the mitts. They are square (no thumb). The mitts are very soft and plush.

I don't think you get my point. There is no best place or vendor. It's very inconsistent mitt to mitt. You can check out Walmart for example and the Euro mitts they sell there. They might have twenty mitts and no two will be the same. In fact out of twenty I would be lucky to find two that I like. You can also check out Target. The point is where ever you go you have to be selective because the mitts are inconsistent in quality.
