SEO for detailers: Can we reach the first page of Google?

Barry Theal of Presidential Details is one of the country's better detailers, but his neighbors in Lancaster, PA don't know this because his site is invisible on Google.

In the next few weeks, I'll be making some changes to his site (Presidential Detail Detailing) and building some inbound links to make it attractive enough to Google that it will appear on page 1 for the following terms:

"Lancaster PA car detailing"

"Lilitz car detailing" <== he does have a spot on Google's map, but no organic listing.

In this post, we identify a few problems with his homepage that prevent Google from recommending it on its first page search results. Notable: his title (essentially the cover of your book, if your website were a book) makes no mention of what service he offers and what city he offers it to.

Changing his title from "Presidential Details" to "Car Detailing in Lancaster and Lilitz PA by Presidential Details" should have a MAJOR effect on his rankings.

Okay, I've now corrected the problem with Barry's title and given him this new one:

"Lancaster and Lilitz Car Detailing by Presidential Details"

Avoid stuffing too many cities in your title, or making it longer than 7 words...Google hates keyword stuffers and it dislikes long titles.

I also added a Heading tag (<h1>) for extra emphasis: World Class Car Detailing Based in Lancaster, PA.

I've decided not to reiterate Lilitz again in the text--shouldn't be hard to rank for this smaller city (smaller than Lancaster).

I cleaned up Barry's introduction paragraph, and made it clear that he is skilled enough that some customers insist he travel hundreds/thousands of miles to work on their cars.

Remember, visitors don't know who he is, so you have to establish AUTHORITY with your visitors as soon as possible.

Robert, FYI the link in your initial post is incorrect, and connects to another detailer in Broward County, FL.

BTW, that site could use a little TLC as well...

Good catch! I accidentally linked to presidentialdetail.com instead of presidentialdetails.com.

It's all in the details...

Great info for us DIY'ers. You have been very helpful in my ventures as you know. Thanks again.

btw, I am redoing mine again without Flash. ;)

Josh

Very, very good choice to drop Flash. Could mean $1000s in business from the search engines.

You had no chance of ranking in Dallas/Ft. Worth otherwise.

Robert,

Thanks for everything that your doing. I knew right away when I contacted you that you were the man for the Job. Your a great guy with a lot of know how that we all need! Can't wait to see what yo have in store next.

Barry

Its fun to see a write up that involves me with out me in it! lol Thanks again

Robert,

Thank you for the email......I made the changes that you suggested on my title, hopefully this will help out. I also changed it on my other site @ Headlight Lens Restoral to reflect the same. If you have any other suggestions, please let me know....

Thanks again for the advise!

I've been in the top 3 rankings for Google for 150+ words now for about 3 years, because of the things Robert is explaining. I learned SEO on my own and it was a long and frustrating journey, so you guys are lucky to have this advice explained to you so well by a guy who knows what he's talking about ;). Kudos Robert, that's very cool of you!

I'm in the top 3 with Google. Hired a great guy who took care of it for me and keeps updating things as other sites gain spots. I couldn't be happier! If anyone wants his info I'm more than happy to share it with those of you who are too busy to do this sort of thing on your own.

We've fixed some problems with the title and the text of Presidential Details' site...now on to the hard work: building links.

In rough terms, here is how Google prioritizes the world's websites:

1. 70%: Inbound links. How many websites link to the website? What is the subject of those websites? How much authority does the website hold (ie, a link from The Wall Street Journal is worth 150x a link from a small town newspaper).

2. 20%: Website content. What is the website's title (ie, the cover of the book)? What words appear on the website and in what frequency?

3. 10%: Website age. Google trusts websites that have been around for awhile...much like you trust your grandfather. This is a big reason web-cars.com ranks so high for the term "car detailing": it was created in 1997...before Google existed.

Thus, the bulk of my work as an SEO is building inbound links.

I summarize two strategies I'll use on Barry's website in this video:

Linking Strategy 1: write useful articles about detailing on free blogs and link to Barry's website.

Here are a few free blog sites that Google recognizes as useful:

HubPages

WordPress.com — Get a Free Blog Here

LiveJournal: Discover global communities of friends who share your unique passions and interests.

Weebly - Create a free website and a free blog

Webs - Make a free website, get free hosting

Zimbio - Interactive Magazine

Home - wetpaint.com

Linking Strategy 2: Create listings in free online directories. Be sure to include website URL.

Suggested directories:

Lansing City Pages on Yahoo! Local. Find Businesses, Services and Events near Lansing, MI

San Francisco Restaurants, Dentists, Bars, Beauty Salons, Doctors

YP.COM - Yellow Pages, the new YELLOWPAGES.COM

Insider Pages - Restaurant Reviews, Beauty Salons, Dentists, Preschools, Spas and more.

City Guides by Citysearch

Yellow Pages: Superpages Yellow Pages, Maps, Driving Directions, Weather...

Post Falls Idaho, ID Yellow Pages and Local Listings

I have to recommend Robert also, super nice, super fast, and well organized.

While I didn't need some of the things others need, but he helped me with AD words. Since my detailing season is slowing down to a crawl, in the early spring I'm going to have him help me expand my service area and specifically target my clients better.

Cheers,

GREG

Shoot dude, when things are slowing down is when you target those clients you don't have yet!! When you're busy it's hard to take on new clients who are demanding.

I took his advice and made a hubpage this morning.

How to find a quality car detailer

Great job! Way to take action. That was a really well written article.

When you do more article submissions, be sure that your link text matches your targeted keyword (Atlanta car detailing).

Your link text was: Detailed Designs Auto Spa.

Google won't fully connect the term "Atlanta car detailing" to your website.
