no name professional detailers

There seems to be a big difference in opinion between those of us who do this for a living and those of us who are doing this only part time or for a hobby; of course their are some exceptions. In my case, I like to carry my professional image everywhere I go, including the internet.

I have found on these boards that there are some people that reveal their name that I wouldn't want looking at my car, much less detailing it. There are others that I have no idea who they are (and could care less), but give rock solid advice time after time.

There is some risk associated with learning how to do things on the internet. Often times, you end up wasting money or product by purchasing things that were shilled, or by using techniques that are not the best - but hey, that's the risk a person takes. However, I still feel the rewards of forums like this outweigh the risks. This forum has made me a much better detailer, and enables me to detail my own cars, and cars of friends and family members to a level I never imagined. Through a similar forum for home improvement, I learned how to do crown molding in my home (from a guy that I have no idea what his real name was).

There's the best thing to come out of this thread so far! If not a city and state, at least a state, if not a state, at least a COUNTRY...sheesh.

moderator tortoiseawd,

Have you noticed the direction of the replies since your post? Maybe you can be serious long enough to either post your view on the subject or kindly remove your comedy?
Let's see, what happened between my post and yours? Hmmm . . . NXSTASY laughed, backwoods_lex made a humorous comment, then several posters disagreed with you in polite fashion. I don't see a problem with that. As for my view on the subject, read on.

On July 5, 1993, this cartoon by Peter Steiner was published in The New Yorker (image taken from http://www.cartoonbank.com):

YoureADog.gif

That's the nature of the Internet, like it or not . . .

And on a forum like this, why do you believe it's a problem? Let's say someone joins Autopia, and uses the name "ImNotADog". Over time, ImNotADog proceeds to offer good advice, is cordial and helpful, and is generally well-liked and respected by the community. Does it matter if his name in real-life is Larry, Moe, or Curly (or Rover, for that matter)? Apparently, it does to you. . . Me, I'll judge our possibly-furry-friend on his contributions to the forum rather than something as insubstantial as a name.

Shakespeare understood this in the 16th century:

What's in a name? that which we call a rose

By any other name would smell as sweet;

So Romeo would, were he not Romeo call'd . . .

Hi Frank

Guys this is a very humerus thread, I can't believe no one has bought up a reference to the country song I'M SO MUCH COOLER ON LINE !

I thought of that video! Marsha Brady grabing that dude's butt - LOL and William Shatner - is that a guy that can laugh at himself or what!

Setec, If you'd display your name maybe you and Frank could meet at a bar and talk about detailing since you're both in Jersey. :hifive:

HI Randy,

Thanks for weighing in on the topic. Hey, country music was always a lot easier to understand than any shakespeare quote.

I especially like the line in that song about MySpace. It is really ironic because I have hundreds of friends on MySpace who are also in the detailing business and not a single one of them goes nameless. Now that is truely amazing when you compare MySpace to the namelessness that goes on in this professional detailers forum. I guess it is like they say; show me who your friends are and I will show you who you are.

Anyway, thanks again for stopping by. Always appreciate your input.

Best regards,

OK, I think I may have gotten to the bottom of this. Frank is trying to Psych us into thinking there is somthing in a name and since he enlightened us to the ways of the BAD men, he becomes trustworthy. Then as your interest in who he is increases, you look to his profile, which links you to his site. There you will find that he is selling information on how to detail, only he is not marketing it to professionals, but to individuals. No doubt much of this information is obtained for free by Frank on Autopia and regurgitated to his potential clients. The site is set up like a online course to give it a level on professinalism, but selling info that you can find for free and not giving any professional tips or techniques is a rip off. This gives detailers a much worse reputation than not giving your name on a forum. I think maybe he is jush fishing for suckers to buy his program, and trying to establish credibility by psyching us out with this name ordeal. JMO

Well, I'm sure glad he was so adamant about giving his full name.....now I can make sure to avoid him at all costs in the future. I hate when people try to take advantage of people by charging for something that should be free or can easily be obtained for free. The moral thing to do would be to point people to autopia to learn rather than charging for information.......oh wait, we don't all give our full names, so we aren't as credible as him.. :sadpace:

OK, I dumped the last couple of posts because they were getting a little personal. We can debate the relative merits of Internet anonymity, but let's try to avoid pointing fingers and calling names. For the moment, I'll leave the thread open, but if you choose to reply, stay civil, and don't get all stabby.

Be it a professional detailer or an amateur tree surgeon it is nice to see a name, I agree. Is it necessary? No - Does it really matter? No - Does it make me think any more or less of someone? - No

It's apparently a feel good thing for some whereas others, like myself, really don't give a hoot one way or the other. Although I enjoy seeing a sows ear turned into a silk purse in clicik & brag areas I choose not to post pictures of what I do. I have them for my portfolio but don't feel the need to share them with the planet. My point is some folks just like to keep things a little more private than others.

As many have pointed out it's the world wide web for heaven's sake! Why would you believe someone's posted name is even remotely close to their real name?

I am not a Pro detailer and my name is Gertrude Leboshitz......anyone feel better? In short it's a topic that has been tossed around as much as it can bear and should go nitey nite.

Since you asked....

Hello, I'm Ron. I am a weekend warrior detailer ( actually, my days when I am not at the Firehouse or Fire Academy). Detaling pays for vacations and flight lessons.

I live in Marlborough, which is in Middlesex County in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, which is in a region called New England, which is in the Northeast region of the United States of America, which is on the North American Continent, ne of the land masses on this planet we call which is part of our Sun's solar system, which is part of the Milky Way Galaxy, which in irself is one of a possible trillion galaxies in what we call the Universe...

Or... we can just be a small locker like the one depicted in Men in Black...

In my opinion a persons name does not give them credibility and i think it is not going to make me respect anyone more (or less) if i know there name. I however dont understand why you would feel the need to remain nameless. I have given enough info on myself, including my name my address my email... i think i would give anyone on this forum just about anything regarding myself short of my social. I think that everyone on here is buying into the dont give any personal information out on the web because you never know whos a pedophile crap.

Just to give this a bit broader perspective, there are quite a few of us on here who don't have to worry about being molested by a pedophile, so that's really not a factor when deciding whether to be "nameless".

I'll add that while there is no name in my sig, a quick PM to me requesting my info would get you all that you need to get in touch with me. I talk to *several* of the members here on a regular basis. Some of us share or evaluate the latest hype from time to time and even just talk on a personal level. From my career years I know better than to share *more than you need* to have a conversation with me. If that's not enough for you then motor on and ignore what I have to say. It wont change my day at all.

yea i was somewhat joking... but its interesting that for a kid that is at risk of that to give out all that i have and be perfectly fine. Whats yall's excuse? lol

baseballover1- There are truly innumerable security issues that can factor in with regard to people putting personal info on the 'net. Some of us go through life on a need-to-know basis, and people viewing this stuff online don't need to know. Hey, I don't give my full name to strangers I meet in bars/etc. either.

Having a pro demonstrate a "simulated criminal inquiry" can be interesting, informative, and downright scary.
