I have used Meguiar's #87 High-Temp Mold Release Wax on just about every car I have ever waxed. It can be a lot of work, but 3 coats will last a whole year outside....

It is an industrial product, used for release agent in epoxy systems. It will keep epoxy from sticking to bare metal, even at 300f . I used it on my black '79 Z28 - the first coat went on the day it came from the dealer. Never had a streaking problem, even when applied in the sun. Nothing sticks after you get a couple of coats on - I had a seagull bomb my Z28, and it just wiped off after it baked in the sun all day.

Sounds like it would be good for customers whose main concern is durability...

Hey, while we're at it, what about Meguiar's #88 Universal Mold Release Wax?? :D

From Meguiar's:

Universal Mold Release Wax

* Extremely durable and high gloss mold release wax

* Versatile--works well on new and cured molds

* Easy to apply and wipe off

* Ideal for use as a storage wax

One could certainly speculate that the mold release waxes at some time will also come under VOC scrutiny, and have to be discontinued (hoard it now, :LOLOL ). On the other hand, since people are making paste wax that is VOC compliant, meaning it is possible (different solvent), maybe at that point Meg's will reformulate the mold releases AND #16 and reintroduce it! Of course, it's possible that the higher carnauba content of #16 (as opposed to other natural and synthetic waxes that are commonly blended in) might not be soluble in the VOC-compliant solvents, which is why they decided to discontinue it in the first place.

From the MSDS sheets, it looks like #88 is closest to #16 in compostion. Anyone have a tin around to give it a try ? Stupid me that I didn't pick-up the two cases of #16 my rep had 2 summers ago. :(

Here are the Megtriplets !

The mold release wax is applied into "Molds" that melted products are poured into, after the melted product cools and solidifies the Mold Release Wax allows the product to be removed easily from the mold without sticking...

Does that help a little?

I do not think the wax is for mold injection....you would be applying it forever...it is for fiberglass molding...in a shell for say boat hulls..surfboards...also called a plug I believe....you would wax the mold ..lay your fiberglass and resins in the mold..the wax helps release it after it cures....

the plastic used in injection molding has a release agent mixed in the plastic

Still confusedas to what it is. but .i don't wan to to hijack the thread..

Think of mold release like the Teflon on the frying pan, it keeps your eggs from sticking to the pan ! without the Teflon ...it will stick !

I order #8, #87, #88 from Marine.com shipping was $10 and a $5 under $50 order fee (sigh). Prices were

$8.88

$7.88

$8.98

I noticed several websites charging hazard shipping fees on a few of them. Others said only charged if weight was over X amount. Now I just have to find a can of #16. I've searched everywhere I could think in several local cities. I tried to order from bunch of website with no luck. Checking on shipping from UK.

Web site says they're from NY. Had you tried them? Don't know anything about them, they just popped up in a search as having some in stock. :nixweiss:

Otherwise, check e-bay. I see they had one listed that had a last bid price of $30.00 last I checked.

(Or, possibly one of the members here that stockpiled to excess might be willing to part with one. :tumblewee :D )
