Just not sure where to start with this one

Hi guys,
I haven't been on here in ages..glad to see the forum still rocks..

I just picked up a 1992 Mustang GT after thrashing my original 92 in a t-bone accident..the 20 or so layers of Zaino that were on it didn't save it much .. I ll post pics later on.

Anyhow the issue:
This 92 all white GT came from Florida and after doing a SSR2.5 on it and the PB polish..I don't see any improvement.. I used an orange pad with the 2.5 - I was going to use a yellow pad but I had no more.

I want to prep it for Zaino treatment I have a few bottles from a year or so ago..I hope they're still good.

Now should I Dove wash it then clay bar and then Dove it again and start with a SSR 2.5 with yellow pad?

The car looks clean but doesn't have that potential feel of looking like glass...I don't know if you know what I mean- the car looks clean - it shines but it's not really shiney from beneath the skin if you know what I mean..
The feel is slick yes, the PB did a nice job...but it's like a mirror that has the under layer of glass kind of chipped and non reflective...
Is this a permanent issue or does doing the steps I mentioned have any potential for getting crystal again...

Thanks

some pics of old GT sitting clean
pics of it smashed
and the new one with 420HP blown that replaced it..
What a difference I must say...

Bummer about losing the car.
It always hurts to have one totaled, but it's especially bad when it's one you have invested a lot of time and effort in. Glad you seem to have come through it OK.

The first thing that comes to mind from what you are saying is that using the clay would be a good idea.
This also seems like one of those times when working on one area until you are seeing the results you want before doing the entire vehicle would be a good thing.
It's frustrating when you do the entire process and when the results aren't what you were looking for, have to do it all again.
If both vehicles had/have original paint, it seems like you should be able to get the same look. If either vehicle ha been repainted, then you may have some problems.
Good luck. :bigups

IMHO

You should always strip and clay before polishing. If you don't you run the risk of polishing the dirt/contaminants back into the paint.

As far as the old one, that should just buff right out. (sorry it had to be said.) Hope nobody wsa hurt in it.

No one hurt...thank God..
and I wasn't going fast at all..a simple left turn and teh guy came stright out from a right turning lane..which becomes a stright lane at teh last 15 feet....anyhow..
I ll definitely do the clay bar steps..

I ll keep you guys posted..

Nice to see everyone is as nice as my first trek through here...

Being a hopeless optimist, I didn't even consider one possibility that would be worst case scenario.
The car is 17 years old, has been in the Florida sun, heat, salt and the paint may have been damaged to the point where it won't look as good as your previous GT.

You're not helping ! :D

I hope you're wrong honestly..
But this is what I have

PC orbital buffer

PB:
ssr1, 2.5 and 3
EX-P
EX
Nattys Wax
Pro Polish

Wolfgang Clay Bar

Then:
Klasse AIO
4 Star UPP

and of course the Zaino line up..Z1 Z2 Z5 Z6mist

I have an orange pad but no more yellow pads..
and a bunch of poish pads....

What's the recipe??

I would get it as clean as possible, then clay with a lube. Then start out with the least aggresive combo and go from there. Like the 1 on a white pad move up to the 2.5 on white then go to the orange with 2.5.The picture didnt show how bad of condition the paint is in but the #3 is a preaty aggresive compound from what I have heard [never tried it] just take your time and be careful. The pc should keep you out of trouble. If you need more correction than that you may try the Megs 105/205 combo works very good.

Thak you guys...
I ordered some yellow pads and a new orange..
I ll get started with the lighter levels and move up from there....

remember that if you go up to 2 or 2.5 and aggressive pads, you need to step down again.

Yes yes..I was thinking about that just today after I read that post about starting light and moving upo..and then thinking..but man,,I ll have top come back down again...So i think I ll just start with yellwo pad 2.5 right after the clay bar...
and work down from there...

Anyhow I already tried light duty work with the PB line and ornage pad and even polish pads..even uised the Pinnacle Advanced Swirl Remover...didn't do much aside from giving it a nice clean glossy FEEL...but no smoother look to it...

I have always been under the impression that the 2.5 should not be used with a yellow pad. :hmmm:

Done so many times...great results...
I find it's an aggressive pad but yet you're still going medium with the compound..so it kind of balances out...
Then I ll do a smoothe PB Polish...and it just looks great..we re talking on a new car or undamaged paint..this Gt will need a little more.

Last night I was out with the GT and man..I'm looking at it..and I see absolutely no depth in it's shine -city lights and street lamps are just there..hazed out on the hood..
..I mean if it was black - it would look mat flat black..-Ok Im exagertaing but really it's bad..
I really want to see what magic Zaino can do here after the prep...

A little update on this process that began today.
I had the car dawn washed and was waiting for yellow and orange pads from Detail City store - they took forever, about 3 weeks BUT they were nice and sent me some bonus things free to make up for it.

So..This is what I did..and the result (pre Zaino) is fantastic.
I used:
SSR2.5 with Orange pad.
SSR3 with Yellow Cutting pad.
SSR2.5 again with Orange pad.
SSR1 with light cuttign white pad.

The car is clean - the finish is a lot better and a lot deeper than beofre.
However, it doesn't have that crystal gloss to it..
But..(I'm very optemistic) There is no polish on there yet and it looks a lot brighter.

Tomorrow I wash with dawn and start Zaino..I just received the new Zaino AIO and the new Z8 mist. I just read how obsolete the Z1 polish-lok is now.
And I also got the ZFX kit. I hope this does what it is suppoed to do.
I ll keep you guys posted on the results...

The paint should have a nice gloss even before you put on the Zaino.

Since you used such aggressive pads and polishes, you may still have marring, etc. and need to do more finishing using the SSR1 with a white or even black pad until you get more gloss.

Ya I know what you mean..But sorry I meant the last SSR1 step WAS with a white polishing pad - not a cutting pad...and I worked it well...There is great gloss anjd very vry slick..excpet not that DEEP refraction clear crystal Im used to seeing.
You think I should do a few more passes with SSR1 or something softer?

marring is very very small scratches, usually left behind by strong compounds. They could be very hard to see (especially on white) you could use a magnifying glass and halogen light to see this. Sometimes it's visible by eye and appears as haze, or a dull surface.

If you have marring, I would try propolish or SSR1 on a polishing pad.

I have used 2.5 w/orange followed with PwC w/polishing pad with good results on my white acura.

I have also used 2.5/orange followed by ssr1, with two coats ex with good results.

I have also used 2.5/polishing pad followed by PP polishing pad, then K-SG.

First inspect your finish, then use appropriate polish and pad. Do test section before going over the entire car! this could save you steps, not to mention give you better results.

hope this helps.
