If At First You Don't Succeed, Try, Try Again.....

Do you have one?

Do you like it?

Do you trust those tests in magazines?

I have a Valentine VR1 and I do believe it is the best. Simple and great range of detection. I know it is pricey but it has saved me more times than I wash my truck!

What about Laser?

Ever talk your way out of ticket?

Any tips to get out of a ticket in court?

its the V1 for me too! Awesome unit.

I have many detectors ( ) and have an Escort 7500 in another car. It has some really nice features to customize the operation but pales in comparison to the V1's sensitivity.

I have not sampled Escort's new 8500 which is supposed to be improved but am really waiting to see a legitimate test by someone other than the biased Craig Peterson. I no longer see any credibility in his reviews.:down

There are two books out now on fighting tickets, you can find them on Amazon using a search, I forgot the names. I fight every ticket even if i lose the SOBs had to spend more getting my money than they get!

I bought a Corbra EDS-9100, paided about $100, in the city mode very few false alarms. I know it only takes one.

There's no comparasion to the models like Valentine or Escort.

If you don't want to spend alot, you can consider this model. Then too my CR-V doesn't go that fast anyway.

None of the bogus "tests" I have read have proven otherwise.

Save up your $$ for the V1...you won't be dissappointed.

I don't know if I would go that far although it is definitely "one of the best". I currently own a V1 (about 3 years old) and an 8500 (about 10 months old). The main reasons for purchasing the 8500 were better aesthetics (V1 looked good in my old Durango but imo not so good in the new S4) and less false alerts. I must say that I have been very pleased with the 8500. It does not false as much as the V1, this I can definitely attest to.

V1 users wonder if I miss the directional arrows and rear radar antenna of the V1. Most of my driving is done in PA where radar can only be used from a stationary vehicle. The rear detection in the V1 never saved me from a speeding ticket. I need to know about the source before I get to it, if I pass the source and am targeted the end result would be a speeding ticket. Now my opionion might be different if I lived in a state where police used radar from moving vehicles. Still I have seen a test that stated the 8500 could detect a source from the rear at a distance of about a mile, the V1 detected the rear source at about 2 miles. The source of this info is from RadarTest.com and I know many feel Craig Peterson is biased. Still I have not missed rear detection or the directional arrows. Actually one feature I love on the 8500 shows you the band (X, K or KA) and signal strength on up to 8 signals simultaneously. The V1 indicates multiple signals but only gives the strength of the strongest one.

As far as tests I only know of radartest.com and speedzones.com and both have rated the 8500 over the V1. Speedzones.com claims that the 8500 is "the pick of the litter" although the V1, 8500 and 980 each have their stongpoints and could each be considered "best in class".

I have heard that Valentine is coming out with a new detector that is smaller and better than the V1. If I was in the market for a detector I would definitely investigate the new Valentine.

<strong class='bbc'>What are the prices for the V1 and 8500. Thanks in advance. [/b]</blockquote>Price for the V1 is $399. See http://www.valentine1 for their products and pricing, as well as gobs of info about radar and the V1 detector in general . . . sorry, don't know about the 8500.

The one i currently have is a Bel 880. I hate it, it sucks! So many false X and K band alarms. I also hate the voice alert, its so annoying.

Laser protection is OK, detected it long enough for me to slow down, but not the guy in front of me. :)

I've talked my way out of 2 tickets so far. One for improper lane change and going 40 in my neighborhood.

Honestly, I think the Valentine 1 is the best. But I still think it leaves much to be desired. Call me silly, but I would like to be able to configure my radar detector. I Want it configurable like the 8500, but I want the directional, and remote antenae like the V1, I want it to be consealed, and hard wired..And I want it to look better than the V1.

Some other features would be nice, like the Uniden GPS-RD, that you can mark certain locations that you KNOW have false alarms, and it won't alarm you the next time you drive by.

So all in all, I want a combination of a V1, Escort 8500, and the Uniden GPS-RD.

*sigh* Maybe I should get into the radar detector business. :P

I have an Escort 8500 that I picked up about a week ago after getting nailed..:( I don't think directional arrows are necessary with this kind of sensitivity. It will pick up radar from behind as it gets reflected from other objects. It has fewer false alarms than the V1 so side detection arrows are not that important. Basically, when I get an alert, I check my speed. The patern of the alert and the strength will almost always tell you where the signal is coming from. As long as I am getting an alert that is worthy of attention, and for a few minutes afterwards, I will drop down to the speed limit whether the signal is coming from ahead or behind.

Both the V1 and the Escort are very sensitive. The extra millisecond one way or the other is almost always irrelevant. If the radar source is instant on and you are the first to be targeted, you will be nailed with either one. And if you are experienced at patterns, you will be alerted far in advance with either detector. Almost any other type of radar other than instant on, is strong enough that either detector will alert you well in advance. Laser detection is a toss up depending on the way vehicles are being targeted.

I guess its a matter of preference on looks, price, directional arrows if you don't think you can learn patterns, and falsing supression.

I was on the fence for just a little too long ($175 ticket) so I went with Escort, which I have had previous good experience with.... So far so good.

Now if they only had traffic controllers for drivers telling you where all the bad cops are.

Glad you like your RADAR detector bigboyhf and happy motoring!

Both are good detectors and should help prevent speeding tickets.

I don't have a detector. My new Z3 has changed my driving habits. I need to look into a detector or a cloaking shield. Beemer me up Mr Spock.

Actually, here in the state of Virginia the detectors are against the law. So I would need a device that works undercover.

I just got my February Car and Driver Today, They did a test with the Valentine One, Passport 8500, Bel 980, Cobra XR-1050, Whistler 1780, and the Uniden LRD 987.

Guess which one scored the highest, The Valentine One, it got a Overall Score of 97 out of 100 and the Passport got 73 out of 100.

The Valentine one outclassed the competition in K, and Ka band. The Escort however did slightly better in rear laser sensitivity, but the Valentine has a better Laser Field of View.

Who was the author of the test? Is it online???? Dayum now I have to go buy a magazine.... Maybe I will pick up some detailing supplies while I am out.

I love my Escort. Very few false alarms and give more than adequate notice of an impending radar source. I love hearing that thing go off and it usually takes a minute or two before I pass the source. That is plenty of time.

From what I have seen, Ka is by far the predominant police radar source where I live. X has always been non-police. I got my first K band warning today. All others have been false. I had an old radar detector that would pick up Ka about 25 feet from the source. That was not much help! The Escort picks it up 1/2 mile or more every time.

I'll have to pick up a copy of that report and see where the V1 is better.

There are a ton of ways to get out of tickets! I get maybe 2 or 3 a year and I get out of every one of em. The key is simple: The secret to keeping tickets off your record is to keep tickets off your record. Make any sense? It is a lot easier to get an officer to hand you down a warning or just let you go if you can say this is your first one. Even if he gives you the ticket the court will usually work with you to keep it off your record. Nobody wants to screw you so the courts will usually help.

When you get a ticket you have a couple options. Option 1 is to pay it. Sometimes fighting it isn't an option because it is an out of state ticket or something. I got pulled over in Idaho once and just paid it since I didn't want to make the 2 or 3 hour trip up there just to fight it. If you pay it then send a check. Don't pay the cashier at the court. Send a check but send it for 5 bucks over the amount owed. Their computers will process a refund check for $5 and untill you cash that check it won't be reported on your record. I know it works. It is exactly what I did in Idaho. I have a ticket for 110 in a 55 framed on my wall next to a refund check for 5 dollars. It was beautiful.

Another way I know this works is from people I know with huge fines they are paying off. I have a friend paying off a DUI and a couple other fines he got on the same night. The court worked out some sort of a payment plan with him and he has been making those payments. He told me that his insurance company hasn't said anything about it. I asked someone at the court about it and they said that untill all accounts are closed the fines aren't reported. So if a DUI will mess your inurance up for 5 years and you take 2 years to pay for it then the 5 years doesn't start untill your last payment. <strong class='bbc'><em class='bbc'>UNLESS[/b][/i] you make your last payment for over the amount owed. That refund check is counted as part of the account. I don't know if it would work in that situation but hey, for 5 bucks why not try??

Your other option to paying it is to fight it. If you call the court they usually have someone that talks to people that have tickets and want to cut a deal. What I do is go to the DMV and pay the 3 bucks or whatever it costs to get a copy of my driving record. I take that to the person at the court and explain that I don't have any other tickets and I'm a safe driver blah, blah, blah and they usually drop the fine by more than half and tell me if I can pay it now then they won't put it on my record anywhere. :D

You can also go to court and plead your case. I am a member of prepaid legal (prepaidlegal.com) and when I get a ticket I call them first. On one case I had a really bad ticket in the middle of the night that I really had no excuse for. It was going top speed in my Mustang on an empty freeway at 3 a.m. The cop said I was going slower than I was actually going so I knew he didn't have me on radar or anything. The thing that sucked was that it was in a town with a brand new court house to pay for and they weren't likely to let me off easy. So me and my lawyer go to court. The cool thing about that is the lawyer they give you is one that is used to being in that particular court so they know the DA and all that. My lawer made a deal with the DA and we entered a plea in abbayance. (sp?) Basicly what that is is a promise not to get any more tickets for 90 days and complete a defensive driving course. If in 90 days I can send them proof of completion of the course and a clean driving record then the ticket is dropped. If not then it goes on my record and I can't get out of it. It was a piece of cake. You don't really need a lawyer to do that. If you ask to speak to the DA they can usually make the deal with you. The judge is most likely to agree with the DA on whatever they reccomend.

Those are just a couple of my best ideas. I have a radar/laser detector and all it really does is slow me down sometimes. It hasn't helped me not get tickets. Well... maybe it has. It has warned me of some speed traps from time to time. I had a laser radar/laser jammer once and that thing was crap. The thing with laser is they can use it at any distance. They usually wait till you are close enough that jammers won't help you. I love my fuzz buster but I wouldn't say it keeps me out of trouble all the time. I feel naked without it when we are in my wife's car but I still survive. I love it on the open road though. Very helpful.
