Griot's new polisher-what is it?

I dunno, cheap for sure but also a step or two lower in quality. I'd say rather that it gives more choices. Not everyone has to have the very best, or even pretty good. Some folks prefer to have a tool that works and more money in their pocket.

Tom

What is cheap? Griot's polisher?

So we don't know yet if this DA has a removable backing plate and if so, whether it is compatible with PC backing plates? Who is going to be the first to ask Griot's or buy the thing and find out?

The finishing pad is red. :angry That seems wrong some how. Finishing pads should be blue. It should be universal. Blue is where it's at! :woohoo:

They have always used red for the finishing pads for some reason.

A sander by any other name is still a sander! Look at the dust collection housing.

While this may be a great machine, what makes the PC the best machine is versatility. I have not found another DA that has a threaded backing plate spindle. This allows a wide range of backing plates and brushes to be used with the PC. Until another tool maker figures this out, the PC will still be the machine to have.

It's not a bad finishing pad either. I use one to apply carnaubas and it seems like it'll never wear out.

Yeah, it was very soft. I lost mine about 6 years ago or so though. :(

Any follow up on this from a user??

A friend bought the PC from Griot's and had some noise/vibration issues and just returned it. They sent him this new unit as a replacement plus a check for $50. (Do they have a lifetime warranty on all products??)

He says this new handle configuration is great, machine appears to work well.

Anyone else?

thx.

Ok guys, here I am - lol - I actually do have one of these new Griot's polishers. I had a pc from them as a gift, bought in 2001. I didn't use it all that much, just a few times on personal vehicles, and it started vibrating/shaking badly to the point it was unusable. I thought I was SOL, but griot's took it back with no questions asked, and sent me a free replacement (this new model we're discussing). As mentioned above, they also sent me a check for $50 to cover the price difference, which blew me away. Griot's stuff does sometimes cost more - but you can see why, their customer service is pretty impressive.

Anyway, go easy on me - I'm not a detailing expert nor do I know the inner workings of these machines, but ask whatever questions you'd like to know, and I'll try my best to answer them when I get home and have it in my hands!

Is the size about the same as the PC? The body looks slimmer in their foto.

I can understand why you like this handle design...it looks good...just like the Makita.

Thx.

here's a thread in which the two (pc vs. griots) were compared and though the griots has more power, it still didn't do well as the pc. (page 5, 7th post down for the verdict) http://meguiarsonline.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=10915&highlight=griots

I'm sorry, but you won't see any threads on MOL where a product is compared to a Meg's product (G100) where the competing product comes out on top. Won't happen. While the final verdict may be that that Griot's polisher doesn't cut it, I would not consider that review to be the...final verdict.

The size is approximately the same as the PC. I can say that it's more comfortable with the design of the handle. As far as one working better than the other, I think that's nonsense for the most part - they are pretty darn similar... I will say it has slightly less vibration than the pc. Other than that, and the handle, they seem to be the same useage wise..but I am no expert.

i can see what you're saying to a point, but megs product or not... i trust joe's opinion and know he would post an honest review even if it was not in megs favor (why would he go through the hassle of ordering one, return it and even start the thread). quite a few people were really interested in ordering one, and found his thorough testing informative. but hey... i guess each person can order one and draw their own conclusions...

I'm not saying that Joe isn't honest. But I challenge you to find one thread on MOL where a non-Meg's product for which there is a Meg's equivalent is discussed in a positive light. Part of it is forum decorum...you don't talk negatively about the host at the host's party. Don't be naive about the fact that mfr's forums are used as marketing tools, and that the content is edited/manipulated to some degree. How many links to other detailing product suppliers are there on MOL? None, because commercial links are not allowed, there's not even a Griot's link in that polisher thread.

the point of the griots polisher even being brought up at all is an advertisement against the pc/g100 and if he did like the griots over the pc, i'm sure he would of said so and i don't think that it was edited/manipulated to some degree to favor the pc/g100 in the first place.
