Found Dalton's 61 steps...

Seems like he is banned from just about every forum.

PLUS i have never seen him offer advise to less experienced detailers.

I guess it would be hard for him to offer advice if he's banned.

Wow, just wow

Personally, I think about ten people on this site put out work just as good, and probably charge way less, just due to advertising. If Dalton had the advertising the detailers here had, he would probably just be one of the regulars. Instead he's world famous for his process that practically everyone on here uses.

I think that's been answered. He may just be sanding for RIDS, but *if* he is sanding the entire car down to remove orange peel than the price isn't completely ridiculous. High? Yes. Stupidly high? No.

Let's look at it like this (sorry if I am playing devils advocate), but on say, a Carrera GT (a $400k car used), you're probably talking about 80-100 hours of work. Now that's anywhere from $80-$100/hr, which is a lot, but on a car of that value I can sort of understand. I wouldn't charge that much, but $80-$100 hour isn't a lot more than what a lot of detailers on here charge, and it's less than body work, which this is kind of akin to.

Of course it is possible he is just sanding RIDS, in fact I think that may just be the case, and the cost is largely based on his skill *plus* his reputation, which is a different story. No less justified (imo), but different.

One more thing; as toyotaguy mentioned it isn't like this is what he is doing every day. I've had details where I charged close to this price, but for me that's a once a year thing. I don't advertise that on my site, he does, that's really the only difference.

You are right Kevin... When it comes to a car like this of it's calibur or similar, there is SO much work that needs to be done. You can't just blow through a car like this as if it were an average car. If a customer is willing to spend this much money, then they are looking for the absolute best looking fit and finish. 80 hours is normal on a vehicle like this, especially if it was in the wrong hands before.

Steps 1-20 is WASHING THE CAR! That's 1 step to me.

Here are my steps:

1. Evaluate

2. Detail interior

3. Clean wheels, tires fenderwells then dress

4. Wash and clay

5. Correct the paint

6. Protect the paint

7. Clean glass in and out

8. Dress interior

9. Make sure I didn't miss anything

10. Take pictures

11. Resize and post them on Autopia a month later if I get time

:)

I have stuff from last fall when I was still using print film. 3 CDs I haven't even put on my computer.

I will probably catch up when I have my hernia surgery since I won't be able to work for a week.

Well this has gone from maybe he is going a little overboard, to he is not worth the money. Would i pay him that? Of course not...will people with money? Yes...and i dont care what anyone says they would do the same thing if they were in his position...and i would like to ask if anyone has seen a detail where the outcome wasnt absolutely amazing, and obviously others do the same calibur of work...would you get on and call them out as well? Maybe they charge 2,000 where i would charge 5 or 6 hundred...great for them, doesnt mean they are better than me even if they are...obviously they charge what they can charge...and keep in mind he isnt in the states so your price comparison may seem ridiculous over here but keep in mind that things are different across the pond....and also when you get your name on a swissvax wax then maybe you can do what he is doing, and i guarantee you would....he is just in a situation that most of us dream about...not his fault

I think the point is that the way he breaks down his steps to make them total 61 is a little odd since 1-20 are basically washing the car which to me is one step.

He does outstanding work, no doubt but I do think he hypes it up a bit at times.

he is like a bottle of patron or goose at a nightclub in vegas...only the idiots pay 400 bucks for a bottle that costs 1/8th that in the stores...

but the club owners are still making money, so why not sell the bottle

The wetsanding is to level the paint. You guage the whole car in areas, map them out and wet sand to level the paint for perfection. Ask a top notch painter how mant times they wet sand the paint, it may blow you mind. Once the paint is level, then you can compound and polish the paint to a shine.

On other forums, his threads will go on for pages of him answering posters questions.
