Color choice for your next car

I've had a variety of colours over the years from red, black (twice), silver, charcoal gray, light blue, green (when it came back in vogue) and now dark red.

I agree that black is a PITA and shows every scratch and speck of dust. Living in the snowbelt gave lots of swirls and in the summer I almost baked in the car. I'd say blue would be a great choice if you're going to stay with a BMW, personally I love my red. Silver can be very uninspriring and you see if everywhere. Even Chevrolet noticed this in their new Cobalt commercial.

As PC said, get a colour you'll love as you'll be seeing it everyday.

It just seems to me that you can put so much work into an easy to maintain color, and it'll still look like you never touched it.

Heh heh, until you park beside one in the same color that *isn't* well cared for ;) When I parked my S8 beside an identical one that was "professionally detailed" everybody could see the difference.

But then I seem to be a little, uhm, unusual in that I think a lot of vehicles just look best in silver. I don't give any thought to what other people are/aren't doing, I just get what *I* want.

Until recently I would consider silver for a true daily driver-beater car but then I learned how hard it could be to match the paint correctly if it were involved in a collision. I would have though something like sky blue or champagne would be harder :nixweiss.

So, I personally would chose something like those. The car might be a beater but I sure would want any repair to be absolutely undetectable when stared at.

Of course there are exceptions :D

I have to say, when we first saw my Lexus on the lot, I didn't care much for the color. It's called 'Teal Mist Metallic'. I had been looking for a red, blue, pearl, or black one. Now that I've had a few weeks with her, I'm really loving the color. It's just dark enough that I get awesome reflections without having to take a picture of it at a retarded angle, but light enough that swirls aren't as visible as they would be in black paint, and it's not hard to take care of.

That said, I think the perfect color is a dark silver/gray. So sexy...

Heh heh, I think ScottWax has had enough of Mazda black ;)

Bill D- Some light blue metallics (Chevy's "light adriatic blue" for instance) are *very* easy to get perfect matches on. Some of the "should be easy" colors like white are incredibly hard. White just *never* seems to match perfectly, at least in the long haul as it ages, sorta like red. So don't do something where you'll have to paint the Caddy ;)

[Beavis voice] "Heh heh, I'm exceptional" :p [/Beavis voice]

IMO that Lexus Teal Mist is really cool; I think it's one of *the* colors for your particular car :xyxthumbs That's something I'd really enjoy detailing (the combo of that car in that color).

George-honestly, I just do not have the time to properly car for my own black car, especially since I have no garage. My paint is absolutely stunning to look it (if I do say so myself) but it really takes some time to keep it that way.

I do have to admit though, that after laying down a base of Shokar and topping with Pink Wax and now Souveran has kept the paint remarkably mar and swirl free for the last several weeks depsite horrible weather.

Dark gray or silver. The majority of cars on the road today look best in one of those two colors, IMO. I like black on a lot of vehicles but it is just too much maintenance.

I am really thinking about Titanium Silver Metallic or Silver Grey if I get a 5 series. I think the car looks best in Ti/Ag, but the Silver Grey has some blue in it and there is so much more depth to the paint. My neighbor has a Silver Grey M3 that we detailed a few weeks ago using Poorboy's Ex. Last weekend I washed it and added a coat of Souveran paste wax. That paint really got me excited!

If I were to get a new 3 series then the Silver Grey is out as they do not offer it in that color. They do have a dark grey, but I already have that color in one of our vehicles, a Mazda Tribute. Probably Ti/Ag metallic. Hard to go wrong with silver on black.

I want a blue car, although I really like white and silver too. The blue would involve more maintenance, but it would be well worth it to see the glistening blue color. :)

I have had black cars for up to 8 years, outside, and haven't had a problem. You will have to realize that it will take more effort in keeping the car clean. The key is to maintain a routine, and to use excellent detailing products, including (most importantly) liberal doses of an excellent wax.

Black happens to be one of the most durable and forgiving of colors. It can also be, as you may already know, the most revealing color when it comes to swirls and (hopefully not your car) less than perfect body work.

Good luck with your choice in any event.

i'm actually surprised here with all the negativity with BLACK.

If we are all in the business of making auto's have depth/ reflect/shine/glimmer/glow etc etc... than what better than black.

to me, its the easiest to make look the BEST and the most WOW factor.

my next will be black...and the one after that will be black...call me nuts?!

come on guys,, silver and white are just too easy!!!

i dont get too excited about the lighter colours, although, I think Silver is taking over the world.

Guess this is more of "Accumulator's Autopian Heresy" :D I think that most people spend far more time on dark colors that on light ones and that life is far too short to spend all that time detailing.

Ever since I got the minivan perfect I've been doing the whole "extreme wash technique" thing on it  I sorta :argue with myself about all the time I spend on it, doing what it takes to avoid any marring...stupid of me, really; keeping the S8 that nice oughta be enough. Life really *is* too short. Next daily driver/beater I get I'm gonna consciously decide *not* to keep perfect; I'm just gonna drive the wheels off the thing and say "good enough" the way I do with my wife's car. Black would be a pretty poor choice for *that*.

Heh heh, that's what I decided- funny how other things seem to get, uhm, *important* over the years, huh? Glad to hear the current product combo is at least being a little more maintenance-free.

NOT BLACK!!!!

AMEN to that!!

After 4 of my 5 daily drivers have been black I don't think I will ever have another one.

Silver appeals to me very much but like someone mentioned earlier it's uninspiring to detail, so I think the happy medium would be a dark silver like a granite color.

I have had my Jet Black BMW for a little over 2 years. I love how it looks after I detail it, but since I do not have a garage and park it outside where I work I find my efforts very temporary. Even so it looks so much better than other black cars, and if I wasn't such a fanatic it wouldn't bother me. But it does.

My solution is to purchase a weekend car that I can be anal about. My Tacoma will get good treatment, but when I re-acquire a Black '96 or '97 Cobra, she'll sit in the garage and I can be OCD about it!!

If this is not an option for you, then buy a silver car, preferrably one that's metallic silver. I have seen some metallic silver's that look incredible when detailed - think Audi A4 (as compared to flat silvers, like some of the Accords, which are just ho hum).

Oddly, I get more satisfaction out of detailing silver paint than I do black paint. Maybe it is because I enjoy the challenge of really making my silver stand out from other similarly colored vehicles.

i agree that when black is detailed is gives :shocked results but maintaining white, silver, or any light or dark color to autopian standards is not easy...i drive a white car and maintaining is far from easy..if i had a black i wouldnt be typing, id be polishing:D
