Collinite IW--does it attract dust?

I am probably going to get some Collinite 845, and I wanted to know if it was attracted dust (like most Carnaubas), or if it's anit-static (good on wheels?). If it is static, are there any spray waxes or detailers available OTC that are antistatic? Mother's FX SPray wax?

Thanks in advance

I'm not sure if 845 is anti static or not. I have been using it for over 9 years and started using SuperDouble coat from collinite for about 2 years. I would have to say it's a low static if anything. I've never really seen any wax or sealant that didn't collect dust just by sitting there. I konw I have used other waxes that attract dust more than collinite does. What I can say is that I love the stuff and have been hard pressed to change. I've tried others and always went back to collinite. I've never had any customer complaints and they always ask what I used the next time they come back because it holds up so well. It's also a secret weapon in soap box derby racing, it has a pretty slick finish to it, and every little bit helps in soap box derby. The SuperDouble coat is a paste that I think is better than 845. Either one of them aren't the easiest to use. If you put to much on it's hard to wipe off and the paste you can only do about 2 or 3 panels at a timethen have to wipe it off. Either wax really stands out on dark cars and especially black. They look like they are wet all the time.

Hope this helps, if you have anymore Q's let me know.

Thanks..wow that cleared up everything!!! For application, is the paste really that much harder than the liquid to get off? Also, have u ever used a QD or Spray Wax on top directly afterwards?

if you keep the coats very thin it comes off fairly easy

I like useing my pc with 845 with a blue pad on speed 3

Alright, maybe I shoulda phrased my question differently--Would 845 help repel brake dust at all? Also, because it's a carnauba-base, would it melt too quickly on rims? Lastly, has anyone tried a final, finishing touch spray wax (like Mother's FX) or QD over it?

With the correct prep, 845, (along with 885/476/238 - same products) has a wonderful appearance. True, it contains carnauba, but it isn't a carnauba wax in its strictest form.

Perfectly fine to put on wheels; and don't worry - it is almost impossible to destruct. Basically no detergent, no washing, no nothing will take it off. THE BEST wheel sealant/wax ever. Today I washed my applicator with APC, dish liquid, soap, industrial washing soap - then I wrung it out and waxed my bathroom mirror with it. The Collinites are unbelievably stable.

I didn't notice more dust attraction than usual.

PS: I use Mothers Showtime, Victoria Wax QD and Finish Kare #425. All are fine over it.

Actually, those Finish Kare products look good! And I see, you (Bence) are a member, of course. What's the difference between 218 and 2180? How would durability be for 218(0) compared to Collinite? Or better yet, would the 218(0)'s anti-static abilities still shine through if it were under Collinite? How good is 218(0) on rims? Does 425 allow for an anti-static surface over the Collinite 845? What are their compound and polishes like? OMG, there's so many numbers!! :wall

Sherman,

I got acquainted with FK products here, and after a little bit of research I ordered their sample kit. I tried them and I was extremely satisfied, so I decided to sign up. The FK forum is still slow (only 30something members), but can be interesting.

218 is a pre-step for the 2180 sealant. Looks warm and deep that's why the bright, high contrast 2180 looks even more outstanding on it. For the rims I'd recommend 2180, Pink Wax or 1000P Hy-Temp wax. 218 is just the sealant conditioner.

The reduced dust attraction depends on the product at the top. But remember! There is no product out there that truly repels dust. The anti-static formulas (whoever makes it) just reduce the dust attraction. It will not attract more but the product cannot stop the flying particles to settle on the surface. An anti-static product is not a force field. The final math: there will be dust on the surface, just less than usual.

425 will be extremely good over everything! It has its own 3-4 week protection, and this is the slickest product I've ever touched. Fabulous.

I've never tried their polishes yet (Xmas :D)... but their 303 glaze is woohoo. Functional/cleaning/polishing/filling glaze, depending on the surface condition, so not just an optical thingy.

I cannot compare the durability of 2180 & Collinite yet because I am new to Collinite. My 885 & 845 arrived just 2 weeks ago.

Bence,

Thanks for the info! I don't have Collinite yet either, but I wanted to know ~how long the 2180 lasts (I simply used the Collinite as comparison because I know there is no "definite" longevity answer for any LSP). As a "sealant conditioner", what does the 218 actually do? Is it basically a glaze that protects somewhat? Also, how do you like the 108?

I know that the anti-static-ness isn't a force field, but it would be nice to have less dust than the Mother's Liquid Pure Carnauba I'm using now--just a couple of days and VOILA, dust. 425 sounds like exactly the product I am looking for as a final wipe; I may simply get that to go over the Collinite so it has less dust for a while--and lasts even longer!!

I'm still waiting for my confimation email to the FK forums...

So, 218 is a sealant with a very light cleaning action which can remove light oxidation. A bit easier to use than 2180 (already very easy), and it is a bit warmer. Finer than a glaze, but there is no need for it when the finish is prepped correctly.

The 108, ah, the Top Kote. I used it on my weatherstripping, tried on my tires, etc. Balanced, nice, low gloss product; makes rubber & plastics look great.

You will get dust with every product imaginable after a couple of days. But with the help of 425 (2-3 coats) it will be a snap to remove.

I have the old, trusted Mothers Carnauba, and I like it a lot. Pretty decent stuff.

Yeah, the Mother's is great stuff, but I got the liquid (D'oh) with nothing else, so durability is, shall we say, below par. I got it before I saw autopia or detailcity, when I didn't know anything about proper polishing, compounding, etc. It's a shame that mother's doesn't get mentioned more on these forums.

I've decided I want to step up from the OTC's, now that I have learned more, so I'm going to get a Sears Craftsman orbital, cut out the stock foam pad and get off the adhesive glue, put on some industrial strength velcro and then some good pads ("Isinoh" on these forums is a genious--search his posts). I'll probably go with either FK polish or Wolfgang Total Swirl remover and finishing glaze (they come with free pads, and put them into a cart together on wolfgangcarcare.com and see what happens...). Now that I'm running out of GLiptone Body Gloss, FK425 will be a perfect replacement. My LSP will be 2180 (plus the Mother's on top), Collinite, or a combo of the two (The fact that you can layer over FK2180 immediately is awesome!!). HOW DOES THIS PLAN LOOK TO YOU??

BTW, how long does the 2180 last by itself? And far does each ounce of the product go?

After using #16 for a while, #845IW is super easy. Once you're used to applying thin layers (which is all you need), you'll find just about anything easy.

Sherman,

2180 should last at least 4 months under really crappy conditions. Wait two or three days before you top 2180. Then decide to top it or not. The Collinite will be good (winter), but honestly I don't see any reason to put the Mothers on. I got the liquid too. It is absolutely effortless to remove, therefore I like to use it and love the smell of it. I'll slap on a coat in the spring.

Why don't you buy a PC instead of the Sears? $109 at Lowe's. Does wonders.

Mad iX,

I agree! I got the new formula, and it looks like water on the paint when applied. Easy to remove and wonderful look.

Bence,

I just don't feel like spending so much on the PC, and for the backplate, and....etc.--it's just not worth it. The Sears isn't bad (1.0 Amp, ~4000 opm), just the whole bonnet thing is its weakness.

On the FK forums it said that the sealants fully harden in 2-3 days, but you can layer/top them it as little as 15-20 minutes, which is really cool, because you can't do that to most sealants. I would put a coat of mother's on top because it would give it the whole, "deep wet carnauba over shiny reflective sealant" balanced look.

Who sells the new formula IW? How can you tell, is the bottle different? TIA

I believe it's been updated for VOC regs, so anyplace that's sold out of their old IW stock will begin selling the new stuff.

Sherman,

...spending soo much? Believe me, it is worth it. In Hungary the PC alternatives start @ $310. True, a balanced look may need a carnauba.

Rob,

The IW bottle and the color of the product is the same. The new formula has a bit different wording. Instead of "clear coat safe" in the upper right corner, it says "paste wax", and in the line under it you'll find "heavy duty paste". The old formula had just "heavy duty".

Old or new, I love the product.
