Can my Capri be saved?

I heard that this was the place for any and all detailing questions, and after using the search button for a while all i can say is Wow there are some skilled people here. I recently purchased this 1983 Crimson Cat I am fixing up, and have already done several areas (engine bay/interior) but I would like to try to make the paint shine a little. I am going to have the car painted in 6 months or so but want to try my hand at shining it up. BUT before i get started do you guys think its worth the work? Here is the car in question, the car has the original paint (Bright Red) and has been sitting since 1998.

Here was the engine when I first picked it up.

And here it is after i yanked it all apart and cleaned/painted/polished.

This is what the tail-light buckets looked before sanding/poly-flex/primer/paint

And after

Thanks in advance!

Looks like all you need to do is get a polisher and some polish/chemical cleaner.

Just looks like its highly oxidized. Doesn't look like it has CC failure.

would you recommend the AIO everyone is using as the chemical cleaner? the paint does not have a CC, i did a small area with alky and it came up on the rag. what product would work best as a polisher?

the trim will be repainted with some SEM products.

I'd try that AIO and see how much oxidation it removes.

You could then try a polish. I'd recommend Menzerna just because I've had so much success with them.

ok, is Klasse AIO the only one? or are there many AIO's? can you get them locally or do you usually have to order them?

Well I've never used #2. So I can't tell you how it'd be compared to Menzerna. But then again, Menzerna doesn't sell a cleaner polish.

Oh I forgot, your car is SS red. Use Meguiars. SS red LOVES Meguiars. But yeah, just use whatever you can locally. Save some money from shipping.

ok gotcha, maybe someone will chime in thats used the meguiars effectively. i am thinking the #2 and then #9 and then #26? would the #9 just be useless after the #2? and would the #26 be a good wax for it?

I would hit it with #7, the oils will remove alot of dead paint.

Then i would clay

Then i would run a cleaner wax over it, really working it in.

Thats really all you can do for OTC and by hand. Make a world of difference though, that i promise you.

i bought some #6 today, the #7 show car glaze would work good?

first congrats on the car purchase :) and good work on the engine bay and the repainting that you did.

If you going at this by hand, then all I can say is best wishes :) I got my UDM and am so HAPPY never been happier my hands dont hurt and I get alot more work done!

hmm if your not going for perfection and just want it to look better then maybe this would be okay: #1 or #83 followed by #7 (polish it out, then cover the swirls with the glaze). I'm not a big fan of this sinse its cutting corners, but hey if your going to repaint it then glazing makes perfect sinse to me :) when detailing a customers car I for sure wouldn't glaze after polishing it, 2 or 3 step polish to get the swirls out, then glaze and seal....

are you going for perfection or to make it look better?

I'd go with Meguiars #80 Speed Glaze first, lots of polishing oils and it does a great job on oxidation. You might have to use #83 Dual Action Cleaner Polish if the oxidation is deep enough.

bwalk-thanks! and i am not trying to get it perfect by any means just trying to make it half way respectable in the meantime. i was a little confused by your advice, first, #1 or #83 second, #7, 3 step Polish (what would this be?), then glaze again, and then a #26 perhaps? this is where i am at so far, i started with #1, then #9, and then a #6, using a little 6" orbital for now because i read they are pretty much beginner proof. its night but here is a picture,

the paint feels really smooth and nice and looks better than the picture, but it seems that there are still spots (the car sat half under a tree 9+ years) that some scum was sitting and its left a light outline on the paint and some hardcore water spots (stains is more like it) i will try to get a picture tomorrow in the daylight

With the buffer you're using, I bet #83 would do you well. One of the previously recommended glazes and then #26 wax and you should be looking pretty good.

I was saying #1 or #83 to begin with, then glaze it with #7 and call it a day :)

If you want you can do #1 and then #83 then glaze it, that should really get all the oxidation off :)

ok sweet, i am going to get a #83, #26 and #7, i will try the #83 then #7 then #26 on the passenger side and see what happens, i hope it takes more of the scum thats on the paint up.

Nice find.

I personally would love to see the car with a Mustang hatch/wing on it.

All the products you've got will get you started nicely.

Post some progress pics!

its looking good so far. if you really wanted to knock out the imperfections you should get a cheap rotary at harbor frieght. would be a good way to practice with it if your going to get it repainted soon anyway
