Advice on first detail of 10k,20yr old car undercarrige

Oh my life, a guy on the PSC has been looking for you. I have seen you car at Pugfest 01 at Gaydon. I was there in my 309 goodwood. We thought yours looked fantastic, but the same two cars Andy Daniles over restored 1.6 with two much painting underneath and Carl Parkers trailered to shows sorrento 1.9 always came in ist and second i believe?

By painting the non painted floor pan would that count as not being factory? Thats what i hate about the concours 205s in our club, over restored.

I know the rust spot you mean now.

I am not planning to concours the 1.9 it is my daily drive, i cleaned up the underside for a torque artcle they wanted me to use the 306 but it has no dirt on it for the before and after.

For example my Freind Mark who wanted to know if your car was still in the club has restored his E plate with the wrong colour trim etc, (black instead of grey), plus he has after market performance discs which the judges didnt notice even though he was in the standard class. In my eyes he should lose points for that.

The judges have know changed, it is now ex show and shiner and yorks group leader Dennis Langley. The judges dont know enough about or pay enough attention to the cars origionality. I would love to judge but love entering the 306. Its still entered in the show and shine class, as its lives outside and gets used all year round, (only bout 6 K tho). They have threatened it should be in concours, against cars that do 500 miles a year!!! For example this year in show and shine i beat a car that only did 900 miles last year! The whole PSC judging is a bit of a joke, see why you had enough.

So you still have the 205? Any up to date pics?

Yours i believe?

Carl's car no longer know where he or the car is. Not seen it since Pugfest 02.

Again he turned up with his team of helpers! Bollocked one for missing some dirt, and thats the last i saw of him.

Rich,Do you know who/why someone from the PSC was looking for me?

Yes, thats my car!Haven't sorted out how to post on this new fangled digital camera, but it honestly looks pretty much the same, although since Ive been married (9 Months now) a wheel has been curbed. And now has a bit of a sound system.

Glad to hear things have changed in the judging stakes,I guess you are right about under the spare wheel not being origanal if you painted it but the only real alternative is to put some wax type rustproofer (mine has this)

500 Miles a Year is very little my car now has 118000 on the clock I will bring it to the UK event when we get round to it,how many 205's in the Concours now?I thought that all standard cars would get put in the same class in the end.Do you know anything about the other Peugeot club?

There is now only one class for concours both std and modified in it.

Mark just wanted to know if you where still in the club, we found that pic on our site and realised the car hadn't been at events for years. And we didnt know whose it was.

Although judges have changed as i said they dont have the model knoweledge or maybe they dont care???

The other pug car club is aimed at the more boy racer types imho.

Last year Andy Daniels was the only one in the concours ( the red one above)

There was a couple of modded ones in the show and shine and a couple in the standard class.

If you want to put your mate mark in contact with me thats fine,it would be nice to speak with some other like minded 205 people!,I still keep in contact with Kelly the 'new' Sussex group Leader but I have not been a member since 02,I am now thinking of rejoining.

I thought the other club was mainly for the older pugs,305.505 ect,ect and not really into modded cars?

I just rembered a conversation I had with Andy at Pugfest 01 at Gaydon he said he used to show his Feista XR2i at the Ford shows but the competition was stiff so he moved to a 205,might be why cars are now a bit over-restored as the Ford boys really do 'go to town' to a standard never dreamed of a Daganam on there best Day.

Oh the Peugeot Club, is it called, im not sure never seen them at any events. I thought you meant the PGAC. Peugeot Gti Autosport Club. I will let Mark know.

I definatley need some advice off you with regards to the 205s engine bay.

Kelly is still running the group along with a guy called Martin.

My arguement exactly.

Gents,

THANK YOU BOTH for this thread - a lot! As Rich knows, I've just gone and bought myself a 205 - 88 1.6 with a genuine 67,000 miles (has a FSH and MOT's dating back to 93 so mileage seems pretty right). Got it last Friday (13th!) and spent 5 hours on Saturday cleaning the wheelwells then another 2 hours Sunday PCing the bonnet.

Then I saw your pics and almost cried - I have a LOT of hours to put into this car I think.

The underside is the area worrying me the most - 16 years of muck, grime and surface corrosion to deal with. Looks like I'll be breaking out the Karcher then!

I do have a question for you both however.

The rust trap you mentioned - are we talking bottom LH corner of door opening as you look at door? I have some bubbling there so is this terminal or can it be cured?

One of mine, Super resin, show car glaze, megs 20 topped with 26 then waxed again a week later with p21s

Looks like we crossed there Rich! I have taken some pics but with a 35mm so need to get the film processed with a CD Rom so I can download some pics.

Starting to realise I have a mountain to climb! Car is basically sound but needs a huge amount of work to get it even vaguely close to being Autopian. I've managed to get virtually all of the grime & muck off from the wheelwells revealing a lot of corrosion on the rear suspension assembly (4-odd gallons of APC+ and a lot of elbow grease).

Plan now is to follow your route and clean the underside completely - don't want to find any horrors after I've spent hours on the paint!

I've used Fairy & clay on the entire body and at this stage only PC'd the bonnet - got rid of all swirls and scratches bar a few which are really deep - looks like a job for one of the Megs compounds. The trim is all correct but faded and has wax on it (not me!), the NSF wheel bearing needs doing but I've found Pug Performance near me - do you know them?

Sunroof leaks, exhause is too noisy (Peco boy racer job I'm afraid - that'll have to go) but car doesn't leak any oil, sits square and seems sound.

Will post pics soon - promise!

BTW how long did you spend underneath yours?

My arches have been done a few times. Where did you get your APC from??, i used autoglym engine bay cleaner on mine. Best part of a day i think to do the floorpan, (arches where easy as they had been done before).

See the threads on are forum abot Pug Performance. I have no experience from them, just heard to stay away!

Your 88 will have the grey trim which is harder to make look nice. I use autoglym bumer car on mine aloow to dry and then use Vinyl and rubber on top.

Thanks Rich. Don't mind spending the time on the car and no panic - just want to get it as good as I can by the summer, especially if we UK autopians are going to meet up! Looks like mine'll get shown up by yours and Mr Concours though!

Got me APC+ from young Creasey - and need some more now! Not sure whether the AG engine cleaner will be a better bet for the underside - maybe try both and see which works better.

Thanks for the tip on Pug Performance. Any suggestions for a good independent specialist as my local Pug dealer quoted me £300+ for supplying & fitting the wheel bearing - ouch! Will have a look on the net anyway but any hints would be appreciated.

I hear what you say about the trim although TBH I'll probably change the exterior to black anyway - not building a show car here as I don't have your patience or, from your pics, your skill level! Other than that I plan to keep the car standard for now - it's potentially very original and I'm too old to start getting silly! I'd thought about lowering it slightly but the handling's so good this seems a waste of money.

I will be in the 306 for our meet up i would think!

Try http://www.gsfcarparts.com or www.autofive for the bearing, both offer good discounts for being in the psooc too. Youy will save your joining fee in no time. My local mechanic does my normal work. Any competent garage should help, dealers aleays want silly money.

Pug and autofive sell the trim. The handle fine out of the box, although the 15s are much better than the 14 inch rims.

Andy, welcome to the club!hopefully your enjoying your Gti's performance and handling aswell as the cleaning!

The problems with wax stains on the trim is pretty common try peanut butter (smooth or crunchy!) nuke it in the microwave first so it spreads easily,I use carplans black trim wax on the bumpers and mouldings 2-3 quid in Halfords,on the way back from Halfords nip in to a service station and help yourself to some of those plastic gloves they provide, because no matter how careful you are the black liquid will get on your hands, under your fingernails ect, just remeber to buff it when its dried.

I find Armour All works best on the mirrior housings, side 'Gti' moldings and door handles.

Any other problems PM me or post on the link. :xyxthumbs

Overlooked what you said about modifying the car,I wouldn't bother they are pretty highly tuned the only mod that I would really recommend would be a quick shift for the gears and some new standard gear linkages as the bushes will be pretty well sh@gged by now anyway and it really does make a difference and possibly kevlar brake pads if only for the reduction in dust, mine are greenstuff.

If you ever have a new clutch have your flywheel lightened and balanced, but only if its all coming apart anyway.

Thanks guys - Autopia rocks yet again!

Main plan of attack for now is split in 2 - cleaning and mechanicals. The first I can do but the second is beyond me (my mechanical skills rank alongside my electrical prowess....) so...

1. Clean underside thoroughly and waxproof where necessary.

2. Repaint wheelwells - gloss black @ front, satin/silk @ rear.

3. Get 1.6 wheels clean (fronts are good, backs are not so clever).

4. Complete polishing of bodywork - bonnet done so far with

good results but there's a way to go yet!

5. Replace any trim missing (eg one of the bolts holding the little

handle to the inside of the sunroof is missing)

Mechanically, the car seems in OK shape - it needs a front wheel bearing, standard back silencer and I noticed last night when I let it run for 10 minutes that there's some steam escaping - uh oh!

Mr Concours, can you recommend any good 205 mechanics? I'm not a million miles from your stomping ground and it'd be great to find someone who is a bit of a 205 buff - it's been a LONG time since I owned a car so I'm a bit out of the loop (run co cars since 1996).

Could always ask one of my classic car restorer clients I suppose - the 205's certainly a classic IMO.

Thanks for the other hints - clutch may need looking at soon anyway!
