Advice on first detail of 10k,20yr old car undercarrige

I think you mentioned in an earlier post Fairy was like Simple Green. I think Simple Green is more like an APC+ whereas Fairy is just washing up liquid with additives that I wouldn't want near my car

That looks great Rich, bet you've spent some serious hours under there!!:up

I did the same on an old 5 Turbo, and got absolute soaked with that damn Karcher...It certainly looked better afterwards, although cleaning the dirt away brought slight corrosion spots to my attention,on the front subframe and rear trailing arms.

How do you guys deal with this? ;)

I plan to clean up my 205 underbody this weekend. In all honesty im not sure. With the 306 if it is painted and corroded i plan re paint it. But lots of stuff is just cast such as bottom front arms etc, i dont want to paint it if it want from the factory. Depend how much of a purist you are, i like my cars to look clean and factory, im not a great fan of paint and polish and powder coat stuff that shouldnt be. I dont like over restored to be honest. The arches on my 205 need rapainting and i plan to do them. Like wish with the calipers.

Gearbox casing needs doing

After, this one shows primer showing through and calipers and hubs in need of paint, too cold out!

But looks ok with the wheels on!

Totally agree mate, as the factory intended(except horsepower figures, obviously!).

What is this 205 your cleaning up? A 1.9?

I must admit I've always had a soft spot for the 205 GTI, although I've never actually bitten the bullet and bought one. I've owned a couple of 106 GTI's and these are truly fantastic, but my love and passion has always been Renault 5 Turbo's...I'm on no.7, and this one I won't be selling.

It's covered a genuine 11,000 miles and is literally as it rolled out of the factory...My aim is to preserve it in this condition for a good many years, and using the information available here on Autopia, that isn't a wholly unrealistic expectation!

Thanks. Just gone past the 80 K, its a 92 1.9 non cat, 2 previous owners one lady for 3 years and our club chairmans dad up till last summer. Needs alot of work as yet i have not really touched any dirty bits, ( the 306 is my show and shine car). Any pics of your 5? my ex girlfriend used to have a lovely Raider.

That's the sort of car you want mate!!

I do have a few pics, but they're all taken inside the garage, and to be honest are not very good. She's still in hibernation at the moment and will be about in March, at which point I'll take some decent shots.

My first 5 turbo was a raider, by far the rarest and best colour in my opinion.

Last of the line registered late 1991 J plate in white.

Not the best colour in the world, but I must admit it has grown on me. I am by design a black and blue man, but these days I must admit having a bit of a white fetish!!

I think it could be the fact that nobody else is that keen on white...Seems to make it a wee bit rarer.

I have been toying with the idea of selling up and moving on to something more exotic...Namely a Lotus Esprit Turbo SE (in white).

But to the dilemma is simply the fatc that I will never find one in the same sort of condition as my 5. And I know it sounds naff, but isn't is better to own what is possibly the best left of a breed than just another average condition exotic??

I agree 100%, i know how you feel, i nearly brought a concours potential 205 gti the other week, but the car wasnnt the right spec or colour etc. Your 5 sounds fantastic cant wait to see the pics.

have you considered repainting the undercarriage with a rust-proofing agent? (In the US, I'd call for POR-15, though I don't know if this is available in Europe/UK.) I would think something of this nature would better preserve the vehicle to last an increased ammount of time after you've cleaned everything up.

Well i did it i removed the 12 years and 80Ks worth of dirt

I cleaned up the underside with Autoglym engine cleaner, lots of soapy water and a pressure washer what do you think?, still needs more work and maybe some painting.

Rich, the rear torsion bar should be a orangey red colour I found good ole' red oxide primer to be a good match,I would give the rear under boot area some kind of protection as Peugeot seem to have been very mean with the rust proofing in that area, theres also a rust trap where the sil meets the side of the door below where the funny slats are around the door apature, remove the rear trim and squirt some rust proofer in there before its too late!

;??;/-1/4The torsion bar on my 306 is the read colour yeah.

I have seen them painted in Smooth red hammerrite which looked to shiny.

yrah the boot floor is just primmer what would you paint with?

The rust trap you mention, are you talking about where the rear quater joins to the sill???

What car have you got Mr Concours?

Q,I have seen them painted in Smooth red hammerrite which looked to shiny.

A,I would paint it with red oxide primer which is spot on colour/texture wise.

Q,yeah the boot floor is just primmer what would you paint with?

A,I would spray it with textured stone chip paint then paint it body colour, what are the other Concours 205s doing in this area? I have noticed some really bad rust here on 205's in scrap yards, make sure you put some wax based rustproofer In the strengthning bar that runs across the bottom (through the cut outs)I would recommend Dinitrol.

Q,The rust trap you mention, are you talking about where the rear quater joins to the sill???

A,No,I mean a bit further forward actually in the corner of the sill in the door frame where the sill meets the rear quater panel if you are able to look at a older 205 (PSC meeting?) it will be apparent.

Q,What car have you got Mr Concours?

A,Ex Concourse 205 GTI 1.9 just like your good self ! You might know the car its cherry red REG:G329 VPK I won the Peugeot Sport Club Concorse several times and was Sussex Area Group Leader for six Years. The car was in REVS and one of the classic car buyers guides a couple of Years ago.Now a daily driver.

I stopped doing the Concours at the PSC when I kept getting seconds to a car that had totaly incorrect/non authentic details, and one of the judges accused me of clocking my car forward on the milage it looked so good! Didn't know if I had been insulted or praised! Anyway if the people judging didn't know what was correct/incorrect then I though what was the point?.Hopefully things have changed.

After the PSC I did a few car classic car shows with some success and moved on to Judging myself mainly with the Porshe Club GB but I still have a soft spot for the 1.9.

If anyone out there is thinking of doing some Judging at a one make show, if you don't know what is correct/incorrect ie; paint finishes, parts for that car ect,ect please find out or let someone else do it.

Rich,Very nice job on you 1.9 looks like it could be a contender.Whats your engine bay like?If you want any help on the correct spec for your car , if you want to show it I would be happy to help,I rebulit my engine for Concours standard and have it on good authority its still the best, despite not showing for several Years ( old habits die hard ):xyxthumbs
