A Better Grout Sponge

STL WRX said:
I bought so many cause I have 2 cars. 05 WRX and an 06 Sonata. I labeled them with a sharpie for each car and I have one to wash the top sections of the car and the bottom sections.

I just tried them out on the WRX and I am simply amazed! I have been wasting money for years on wool mitts that cost almost 7 dollars and last about 2 months before they fall apart. The hood on my car was recently painted and has no scratches or swirls and after using the sponge it left no marks, scratches or swirls at all. I also use the 2 bucket method with Meguiars Gold Class wash.

I am amazed!

also, the nice thing is it rinses out very easily as well... :)

Where do you get your sea sponges from, if I may be so bold as to ask? Many thanks in anticipation.......

I only use sea wool sponges harvested in Florida. Acme Sponge & Chamois company harvests a great sponge.

I buy the largest ones available, around 10-11 inches. I have had excellent results from these guys:

Buy the Acme Sponge & Chamois Company SW#1-1011C Sea Sponge, 10-11 inch at Hardware World - The world's #1 home hardware site

I have a new 2008 Accord Coupe and the sponge has not inflicted any marring on the buttery soft clear.

for those who are wanting to try a sea sponge, be careful and know what you're getting if possible. fellow member detaildoc used one and it marred his paint... http://www.autopia.org/forum/click-brag/101217-life-after-sea-sponge.html

That's because he used ONR with it. It isn't the best medium for a waterless wash. With a traditional car wash soap, nothing is silkier soft than a sea sponge.

Sorry for going off topic, I'll stop :o

hmmm... well, i guess people are going to have to experiment and find out if it works or not for them.

off topic :D ... how's the accord coupe doing?

I only use GS's with ONR. It is the only thing I have found to not mar the paint on black cars. I usually give the car a power spray first if it is pretty dirty. But after trying everything with ONR as a wash medium, I have found that my GP's work the best.

Now which materials are the preffered grout sponge?

I've always had a preference for cellulose sponges because of their absorbency and also use small squares for applying waxes because they leave a very even film of wax and waste very little of the wax.

There are foam sponges, and of those I've experienced the really airy ones like the ones in soft applicator pads and the stiffer synthetic grout sponge types.

i have to say i am quite pleased with the longevity of this GS :up . for it being so soft, light, maneuverable, and cheaply priced (a whole whopping $1.XX), one of the ones i am using finally had it's last day. can't beat it for the price... :2thumbs:

BTW... where are you detaildoc?

Did anyone say Grout Sponge from Lowes?

. Still loving my GS by Proline, gets softer and softer each time, only medium that won't marr the super soft CC on my Lexus, lasts a long time, suds like crazy, and super cheap.

The Lowes in Redlands doesn't have them. Checking online it appears that they carry them, but when I was down there last week there was no love.

I guess that I'll have to wait until I go to REI in Rancho Cucamonga and check Lowes over that direction. I guess that's the price that I pay for living "up here".

A lot of work for a $1.87 sponge. Maybe I'll buy two, LOL.

:aww:

Lowes in Rancho Cucamonga has them, saw at least a box of 20 a few weeks ago in the home cleaning section. May be, I'll pick them all up tomorrow so you won't get any.

Are these good for traditional washes or are they just for ONR?

just to make sure, write this down so they can definitely check to see if they have them if you can't find them... Item #: 109653 / Model: K-28P

it should be in the section where the cleaning supplies are (mops, etc.), and if they aren't on the ground where they should be next to some other sponges, look above way on top of the over-stock shelf and see if you can locate them (it should be easy, you'll see the front of the box that says proline tile & grout sponge). as DetailDoc mentioned, these get softer and softer with each use... :heelclick

I haven't specifically looked for grout sponges at those stores yet. But I did buy the one from Home Depot a few days ago and tried an ONR wash with it and loved it!
