Winter Protection on Daily Drivers

Accumulator, not to put you 'on the spot' here, but while reading up on 476s threads, I came across two varying posts by you. One from '03 said, that you wipe-on-pause-wipe off, because not letting it fully haze/dry made removal a breeze. Another from '06 said you apply your waxes to the entire car, (including 476s) before buffing. Also, users in the older threads seemed to complain a lot more about 476 toughness to buff off, while the newer threads shared similar views that it was easy to buff off. What's the deal?

Late in replying as my internet connection is messed up these days...

Hey, you're not putting me on the spot, I welcome the chance to clarify my position and I commend you on doing good research. My discoveries and subsequent change in method were in another thread and I suppose only the long-time regulars here could be expected to have read the whole story.

I *did* once apply certain waxes via the W-O-W-O method, specifically Collinite 476S (figured the durability would still be OK and the the application would be easier) and Souveran (hey, it says to do it that way on the jar).

On the beater of that time ('84 volvo wagon, outside 24/7), I noticed that the 476S didn't last as long as I'd expected when I applied that way  I did some side-by-side comparisons and sure enough the 476S lasted longer when I let it set up before buffing it off. It did have more staining/streaking issues when used on plastic/rubber trim though, so I still W-O-W-O on those surfaces. After I switched to letting it set up, I started getting the incredible durability that I now rave about. And, heh heh, I no longer do the oh-so-quick work that I used to do on the beaters; now I treat them basically the same as the good cars.

With the Souveran, Mike Phillips of Meguiar's challenged me to try letting it set up

and, as his reasoning seemed sound, I experimented with it. Sure enough, it's a better approach with that wax too. As long as you apply a nice thin, even application, it works great.

So I now let *all* my waxes set up (except on trim) before I buff them off. But note that there are some waxes that this absolutely won't work with, so you do need to make sure it's a good idea before you try it with just anything.

So how long should you let them set up before buffing? I usually wait about 30 min.

Until they wipe off cleanly, with no smearing. You can just do a quick swipe with your finger and see if you get dry wax with no smearing (OK, more particular types will use a nice MF). Generally, longer is better but after some point the product is dry and there's no point in waiting any longer.

FWIW, I did *not* encounter problems when I let Collinite set up overnight, still buffed off easily. But I wouldn't let #16 set up for days though, that one *does* become tough to get off after an extended period (even with a thin application).

Yeah I'll just skip the windshield.

Accumlator didn't mention this in his reply to this, but I have noticed that my new jar of 476s is actually a little easier to remove them my last jar from about 6 years ago. Is it possible its been reformulated to make removal a little easier?

I let my 476s set for about an hour (an hour from when I first start applying wax to the paint, so about 50 mins after I'm done waxing)

They reformulated a while back due to the VOC regs, and from what they told me the reformulation took a bit of doing before they got it right.

My 476S is the old, pre-VOC stuff (stockpiled it after speaking with them about it). Could very well be that the current formula is easier to use.

It must be, I really didn't find the difficulty as described on these boards. Heck, I had more difficulty with Mothers S&G showing white streaks in new spots daily.

true, 476S is very easy product to use, if you happen to apply way too thick like I did

you will have some particles stuch to the surface, I just applied it to my brand new HRE

wheels with schrome lip.
