Winners Circle MF micro marring?

I was just looking at my car under lights tonight and realized I have micromarring. I have only been using the new Winners Circle towels that I got from the good deals forum. Came right home to do a CD test and sure enough. My usual mitt passed, the WW and the green bonus one (I used it for Z6) both scratched the CD with as much pressure as needed to wipe off water or the Z6.



Anyone else having these problems? I never had marring until now. I usually use ww and other towels I got from fiber-works and never had any problems.
 
Well, those green ones are really soft and plush, but they marred a CD for me (before washing, anyway). I think it comes down to getting what you pay for--You can get some pretty nice seeming MF's for 1.50-2.50 each, but I've found they fail the CD test (before washing, anyway), while the ~$4 towels don't.



PS Let's not get into a flame fest about whether the CD test is valid--I DON'T know if those cheaper towels would have marred my paint, I'm just reporting what I found.
 
My Winner's Circle waffle weave towels left marring and got demoted to wheels and glass. I posted about it a while back...didn't seem like anyone wanted to hear it.
 
I do not use my WCD WW because it feels "harder" than my other WWs, but I have had great luck with the green plush towels, even on exceptionally soft paint.
 
Just to clarify. The CD tests were done after the towels had been washed? I use mine the other day on my black Pathfinder and didn't notice any ill effects. Granted, I topped with Natty's blue so it may have sealed the defects. I really like those WW too. They were like water magnets; equivalent to my large PakShak WW IMO!
 
yeah, its hard to tell who was the culprit, the ww or the green but they both flunked the CD test for me whereas my fiber-works all pass and never marred my G35's paint. Just made an order for more fiber-works. Oh well lesson learned
 
I have quite a few ww's from various vendors/manufacturers and I find that they all scratch the surface a little bit. I was able to reduce this scratching by using some Eagle One Wax As U Dry along with it. It lubricated the surface and prevented some of the marring.



They are great drying towels, but they can definitely be harsh at times.



To be perfectly honest, I'm actually starting to go back to my old Absorber for drying lately. It seems to work just as well, if not better, and doesn't scratch the surface at all. I'm basically using the same washing machine method with my Absorber as I do with all my mf towels and it's staying extremely soft and supple.
 
yes these were both washed before first use, then every time I used them. I pulled them off my drying rack to put them to the CD test when they scratched. I just noticed marring after about 3 or 4 washes/ QDs
 
I'm very sorry to hear those results. When I first had the green plush towels made, a fellow Autopian and I rubbed them on CD's and we did not get any marring or any visual marks for that matter. Out of the 4200 + that I've sold, this is the 2nd such comment. Many others have been satisfied and placed multiple orders. Tomorrow I will retest some new ones and used ones and see what happens.



I won't sleep well tonight, but I appreciate your comments as this is what the forums are for.

As has been suggested before, the CD test is not the be-all/end-all test, and many have suggested it is useless because it is not an equivalent surface to a vehicle's painted surface. In my little test, I found that quite a bit of pressure needed to be applied to cause scratching to the CD, much more than you would use for drying, but the kind you would apply on a stubborn spot of polish or wax. I didn't follow up with post-wash testing (and I only did a few polishing cloths, not WW's).



Not to complicate this, but because of MF's affinity for particle retention, a post-use/wash test might also not be completely fair to the towel if some (microscopic) grit/whatever has remained in the towel.

The softest WWs I have are the gray ones from Ian at MicrofiberTech. They don't appear to mar my paint, but a) most of my vehicles have hard paint, and b) I try to "blot" when drying the "good" vehicles. The Absorber/Water Bandit/etc. just never get that last bit of water when I use them :nixweiss
 
This is not what I wanted to hear about. I have'nt had a chance to use mine (WW or mf) hopefully all will be well. I am happy with the great service though so hopefully they'll work out so I can order more from WC.

I would echo this comment. I've even noticed a little marring from using a waffle weave towel that had a silk border stiched along the edge, which isn't supossed to scratch. Maybe the paint is softer than usual? Anyhow, I haven't noticed any marring, as of yet, using Rob's towels.
 
I noticed the waffle weaves felt pretty rough compared to other microfibers that I had but I have only used them to blot dry, never dragging them across the paint.



When used to blot dry only, they seemed to be quite effective.
 
I just did the CD test with my WCD plush green and no matter how hard I rubbed with the center of the towel, I got no marring. If I rubbed with the border stiching, I got marring with moderate pressure. The entire WW towels however, I got minor marring with moderate pressure. Both towels washed, air dryed and never used.



As a comparison, I got the same minor marring with the less plush side of my Pak Shack towels with moderate pressure. Little to no marring with the plush side.



One note though, all the above pressures were well above what I normally use when detailing. I'll be using the WCD towels with no reservations. I surely hope my paint is alot harder than the surface of a CD.

On a side note...I just had my first article published in this month's PC and D--page 96. This is helping me feel a little better and thanks to the follow up comments above.

I've been using my Plush Green and WW from WCD for about six months, and never had micro marring in my paint. I wash them with Pinnacle Micro Rejuvenator since new.
