Will be changing transmission fluid soon.

Been using sync oil since I knew how to drive.
Are you saying there's sync tranny fluid?

Yes there is synthetic transmission fluid. My car will have 40,000 miles on it soon and I'm leaning toward synthetic.

I always run GM Synchromesh trans fluid in all of my manual cars. I guess you should post the car and trans type too. ;) But I use the GM Synchromesh in everything, not just GM's. A lot of Honda and Subaru guys use it as well.

Automatic.

Depends on what kind of car you're dealing with. On GMs, I've heard more than one person say that a full-synthetic ATF (Mobil 1 for example) is too thin and will cause gear/clutch slippage in some cars -- most notably I have heard it from folks with 4L60E transmissions.

Probably best to stick with the manufacturer recomended stuff. It should be in your owner's manual. Personally I put a 10W-40 synthetic into the manual tranny of my CRX, it lightened everything right up. There was some gear wear and stuff (being a 16-17 year old car) so that might have had something to do with it. For an automatic you should stick with the recommended everything, oil viscosity affects torque converter performance.

Yeah, I used work as mechanic helper back in 80's. When I was told put 10w40 on the tranny  Yeah, I was like WTF.. my 1st time heard of it. But, I dont think you can use those on newer Honda's.

I put amsol in the Baja at 15k the rear diff on them is soooo SMALL they said i should change that out every 10k. I think you should go with synth.. but that is just me..

Amsol
Royal purple
Redline

all syth.. all good

Correct. My trans builder told me I don't need any type of fancy fluid, and that any Dexron III/Mercon will work (in the '60E), even Napa brand fluid is fine. He did tell me to stay far away from synthetics though, since it will cause excess slippage and burn up the clutches.

Royal Purple for my tranny. I don't need to change it so much anyway, might as well use the good stuff.

Well, differentials are a whole other story than transmissions. The front and rear differentials on my truck are both running Mobil 1 10W90 synthetic gear oil, with a limited-slip additive since I have a posi. rear differential.

And for those with a 4x4 transfer case, do be careful what you're putting in them. For mine, if I put anything other than GM's Auto-Traxx II fluid in, the TC will be ruined.

Rabbi,
i was offered a trans fluid change the other day and turned it down.Everyone i know that has changed their trans fluid after some time has lost their trans.if you do this as reg maintenance then it is a good idea, but if you have not changed the fluid in a long while or as a reg maintenance i think this may not be a good idea.

Sometimes varnish is all that holds an automatic together!

Automatics are designed to run 100k miles without being touched. Towing and racing will of course cause much more heat, that heat will break down the fluid.

Since most american transmissions hold about 12 qts just changing the 4 qts in the pan does not do much for you. Most companies claim that synthetic is 100% compatible with dino oils but my experience has been bad doing so.

I am a big fan of Royal Purple. I use it exclusively on my autocrosser but it has a T5 manual transmission.

My car's manual says to change the fluid and filter every 50,000 miles. It reads to only use DexronIII. I'll have it changed sometime before the 50,000 mile mark.

I myself run Redline Trans Fluid and also Redline Gear Oil in the diffs in my truck and use Mobil 1 for the motor.
You talk about an expensive tranny fluid change. It cost me about 200 to change the fluid and filter, but i alos have a larger aluminum tranny pan.

Transmission fluid in it self is synthetic, All synthetic. If you change it religiously ever 50k why pay the extra price for the expensive stuff, in the long run your dumping hard earned money in the drain can.

Very smart thing to do. It's much better to change it too soon than to change it too late and have a slipping tranny.

I'm dumping my motorcraft AFT and going Amsoil ATF. Synthetic are leaps and bounds ahead of dino oil imho. Synthetics don't "shear" as fast as dino does so you can extend the recomended fluid changes. I go 5,000 miles on motorcrafts 10w30 synthetic blend using motorcraft filter before my next oil change. Full synthetics allow you to go 7,000+ between oil changes. Amsoil has a guide on there site to help choose the correct fluid for your application.
