Which detailing products have disappointed you?

DuPont teflon tire dressing. I just can't make it work for me. I apply it to a clean tire with an applicator, I let it sit over night. In the morning the tire is blotchy and has white dots all over it. It is like it won't flash or something. I have tried it on multiple tires and it just doesn't work for me. FWIW, this is the water-based white liquid tire shine( I think there is another version available, perhaps solvent based).

Could it be the tires? I've had no such problems with the bottles that i've bought.... I just spray, wipe excess off rims, and let dry completely. Sometimes, i've had to reapply, simply b/c the tires soaked up the product, leaving blotchiness....

WAUD, for me too.

S100. I've purchased it twice, and I gave both jars away. It is definitely not like Souveran, at least not on red.

The old GC; the new one is very nice.

The CK and PB stuff. I think I expected too much. I like the PB S&W, though, a lot.

Liquid Souveran.

UPP. It does what everyone says it does, I just don't like it a whole lot.

I dn't know that it's disappointment so much, though; I think it's that I've learned how to use the stuff, and there isn't enough difference between products to make any one thing that much better than another.

I think S100 is the single most overrated product here, though. It imparts a silvery reflectiveness that hides color. You guys with the silvers, whites, blacks and grays, the neutral colors, you won't see it. But with the vivid reds it's very obvious to me. WAUD is second, for the same reason. All reflection and jetting, no color.

Oh boy, that should start an argument. I'll make the disclaimer right here: FOR ME. Nothing wrong with the stuff for you, it's just not right for me.

My biggest disappiontments were Souvran and Blackfire and unfortunately I bought both whole kits.

Some of the best , FMJ,Relections,Slickshine and Final touch Wax, Surluster,Stuf and Shining monkey

Can't believe you don't like VM. I use it on so many surfaces besides paint including glass, rubber, plastic, chrome

The ultimate quick oxidation remover. Turns orange dried up seals into flat black ones which then autoglym, wolfgang and klasse turn to jet black and really supple

Only dissappointment from the stuff I've bought after reading about here is Forever Black

It's great on hard plastic surfaces but I've found that if you have to restore the rubber or plastic surface with above mentioned products, all it does is sit on the surface then dry up and leave streaks

Also it makes rubbers go from supple to rock hard.

On the other hand, everything else has been awesome

P21S finish restorer which I just got in has been sensational

I use VM more for interior and exterior plastics and rubber than on the paint.

Turned oxidised 1994 EF tickford xr6 wagon rear exterior trims from white to to a super shiny, like new black finish

Best product of all - Four Star Ultimate Auto shampoo - cherry ripe in a bottle and keeps my car slick which WG spritz makes even better.

I can't hink of anything that stands out in disappointment. Its not like I use alot of products.

Two thumbs up in my book:

Klasse

Menzerna FMJ

Menzerna FP2

PC 7424

After all the hype, I didnt find VM all that and a bag of chips. Dont get me wrong its OK product, but not an earth shattering "must have" product as hyped by some. I didn't find it any better or more versatile than AIO or GEPC.

One reason that VM is useful to me is that I can use it out in the sun, which isn't as easy to do with AIO or gepc.

As for products I wasn't happy with, I'm having a hard time liking meguiar's apc, meg's #9, meg's final detail, and sonus sfx2. FD had a lot to live up to after how many positive things were said about it. It's an okay product, and it's cheap, so I didn't feel robbed.

I have NEVER been more dissapointed with a product than I was with NXT. It is all hype and had NO durability at all.

On the flip side to this question I have never been more pleased with the new Zaino Z2 Pro and was very impressed with how quick it dries, its durability and ease of use.

I should probably also mention DFTowels for removing polish and Autopia's own blue and yellow waffle drying towels. :xyxthumbs

Heh heh, it didn't do it for me on Jaguar's Rhodium Silver either ;) Some paints just seem to get a certain look with Souveran that nothing else will match.

I was probably most disappointed with Gold Class Wash. I don't know how anybody washes with that stuff without getting some wash-induced marring.

By far, S100. Except for its ease of use, nothing about it impressed me.

SFX polishes. Very user unfriendly in my opinion, and it should not have to be turned into a science project to figure out what needs to be done to make them user friendly. They do remove swirls, light scratches, etc., but the difficulty in removal and extreme dusting (like glue) put the polishes on the back shelf.

I'm also disappointed in Four Star's tire gel because of its poor durability. It is a perfect look, IMO, but the durability is mediocre at best.

Sonus SFX pads. All three. Major dislike, but they look and feel so good. (Regular Sonus pads in general aren't impressing me either, but usable.)

SFX pads left a lot of micro marring when I used them with Menzerna polishes. (I theorized they might generate firmer pressure on the IP and FP and produce nicer "semi-rotary like" results. Bad theory.) Staying in the "safe" DA speeds with these pads just didn't work the product right as I used it. Cranking it up on a test area was the wrong way to go, too. Not the same great results I get from a CMA Orange pad w/IP (5-6) and the CMA polish pad w/FPII (3-4). No desire to figure out how to use them properly and with what product for good results and am saving them for basket-case paint work only, or the shower tile maybe.

Minor diss...QD+....doesn't "spray on" in a controlable way for my tastes. Makes my Pak Shak MF smell like QD+ forever.....Will still use from time to time until all gone.

Did not find the SSR's "superior" to various Meguiars products. DACP still gets consistantly good results and seems to always work as intended.

Major :up surprise. Quick Shine. Really is great.

I must say that i am very dissapointed in 1Z perls shampoo. I know it is truly loved by many autopians but I just dont like its sudsing ability.:down

Klasse. I found that the sterile shine it provides and remarkably un-awe inspiring durability isn't worth the PITA application.

With regards to SG, I'd have to agree. I have the same problem with it that Tom (mosca) has with S100, the silvery sheen. Not something I like on black. However, I really like AIO either under carnaubas or sealants.

Think about the responses to this thread - some get great results and LOVE the way a product works. Others get entirely different results with the same products.

This is why "What is the best..." and "What should I use..." threads should be taken with a really large grain of salt - there is no right answer.

These are products that didn't meet my personal preferences. They are very good products in their own right but they just didn't win me over.

Meguiar's NXT Paste: very good looking, great depth, darkened color, very good clarity on reflections, extremely easy to use, made metallic pop, very liquid looking. But it looks awesome only when closer than 15-20 feet. When I move away, it loses its glow. My car doesn't stand out in the parking lot anymore. It usually stands out even from a good distance when I have Klasse or Souveran. I'm still trying to unlock its potential but at this time, a minor disappointment.

Klasse VLRP protectant: I found that this would be the perfect treatment for interiors, tires, outer trim and vinyl convertible top. It is a superior cleaner, has a matte finish (more matte than 303), durable, doesn't outgas and leave hazing on the windows, it is not a dust magnet. But when I applied it, I was just not impressed. It was just too flat for me. I wanted some sheen. My dash has remained fairly dust-free even after top-down driving.

Amen ! It is nice to hear the opinions of products, I have a feeling its the color of the paint plus personal taste that drives this, and its all good

You doggone betcha, forrest. You doggone betcha. Two people will get the exact same results, and one will say "WOW; dint I tell ya itd look AWESOME?" And the other will be thinking, "Well, THAT was a waste of time."

Tom

Eagle One WET Polish and Wax and the old EO Cleaner Wax(wellow writing)...both lasted nearly nothing and hid no swirls, unimpressive shine.

Did you find the NXT liquid to not have this shortcoming? And I agree with all you said about Klasse VLRP but I like the matte finish it leaves. Guess this just reinforces what Forrest said. ;)

Products I'm not crazy about:

Meguiars Natural Shine and Mother's Preserves vinyl and rubber protectants. Both these looked good on vinyl and rubber but lasted a week or less on tires in dry SoCal.

Meguiars Quik Wax, any paste wax looks better, is easier to apply and lasts longer, dunno what I bought this for.

Eagle One Nanowax: Average look, I found it difficult to differentiate between it and Speed Bead spray cleaner wax I already had on the car and it didn't bead as tightly. Don't know about durability issues others mentioned, I put something else on within a month.

Klasse SG: I know others have had great success with it. Just that on a solid red car the acrylic shine doesn't let the color glow like a carnauba IMHO, on *my* car. Actually, I think just AIO looks better *on my car* and I just top it with a carnauba. Easy and quick.
