Which detailing products have disappointed you?

Anything you really wanted to try, and then found that it did not live up to your hype or anticipation?

I will probably not make myself popular now, but here are some products in that category for me:

Sonus Ultimate Drying Towel - That mf towel just doesn't feel very well made to me, and I find threads hanging off it after every wash. I think it is a decent waffle weave, but I guess my expectations were so high because the rest of the SONUS lineup is so strong.

MicroRestore - I still don't think this stuff works any better than Tide.

NXT Protectant - Does the job OK, but hardly a "next generation" product. Really, it is just another mass market vinyl protectant. It is not even the best of the readily available products in that domain (that honor goes to Vinylex).

Interesting statement about MicroRestore, I have been wanting to try it but maybe I need to do more research. So it doesn't soften up MF when they get rough?

I think it does a decent job, but I don't find my MFs to be any softer or cleaner after using MicroRestore.

I know that I am in the minority on this view.

I havent given it a fair shake, i have a sample of it, and forgot about it. I pre-washed my mf's in laundry detergent, then remembered I had the MR, so i added that to the wash after the pre-wash. I have to admit, their clean, but Im not sure what got it clean!

I think my biggest dissapointment goes to Wolfgang Protectant.

DuPont teflon tire dressing. I just can't make it work for me. I apply it to a clean tire with an applicator, I let it sit over night. In the morning the tire is blotchy and has white dots all over it. It is like it won't flash or something. I have tried it on multiple tires and it just doesn't work for me. FWIW, this is the water-based white liquid tire shine( I think there is another version available, perhaps solvent based).

Waxing Frenzy has dissapointed me terribly and I haven't even used it yet, lol.

Highlights

NASCAR uses Waxing Frenzy because of its aerodynamic properties. Some of our NASCAR teams have actually picked up speed using it.

Our product is designed to protect the clear coat finish, not remove it. Our wax will not "melt" and run down the finish. Waxing Frenzy protects up to 1210 degrees.

If anybody buys this stuff with claims like this I have some real good property for sale in the beautiful temporate and accessable everglades.

I've had the worst luck with EX-P. I've given it numerous chances but come up with the same results. Decent shine, average depth and really poor durability = :down . 4 weeks is the longest its lasted. Oddly enough I get better durability with both Natty's and EX. At the moment my sample of EX-P+ is just about on its last legs after 10 weeks. I'm guessing it might make it 1 or 2 more. The depth and shine it gives me more than makes up for the below average durability.

:rofl :rofl :rofl You're too bad! (and too funny)

I've never been able to make Scratch-X perform at all.

Back in Black is only back in black until the next storm.

WF Shark Tower scratched the stainless steel on my Grady-White.

Well to be respectful, a certain synthetic sealant (that was popular to a lot of 4th gen fbody owners that will remain nameless). It can have a nice appearance on some cars, but IMO it didn't have the finish quality of a good carnauba.

On the other hand, some excellent products I've tried so far:

Zymol:

wax enhancer, blue microfiber towels, The Estate Glazes.

P21S

3m finish it fine cut polish

Griot's Garage:

microfiber towels, wheel well brush.

Sonus:

Carnauba Spritz, soon to try acrylic glanz, paintwork cleanser, final polish.

Poorboy's:

tire dressing.

Formula113 didn't live up to my initial impressions. Looked great, is easy to use but after 6 weeks, it is dead. Same with 3Ms Perfect-it Show Car Paste Wax-terrific initial look but 6-8 weeks is all I get, and I normally get 10-12 weeks with S100 (for comparison).

I'm not a big fan of Meguiars Endurance Tire Gel either. It tends to build up and on a windy day, it attracts dust like crazy.

I'm with ya on the build up:down Also it takes a little more work to apply due to its thickness but I find the durability to be excellent.

Maybe I just didn't read enough about NXT, but I went out and bought NXT, Tech Protectant and NXT Spray Wax (quick detailer?) and used them on the wife's Odyssey last Saturday. It is now Wednesday and the Ody is covered in dust. I used #16 on my truck 1 week before (2-5-05) and I barely have any dust on mine. I'd just as soon throw the NXT away before spending any more time using it if it's nothing but a dust magnet. As for the NXT TP, too greasy. I haven't used the NXT SW yet. I really need to find a good sealant to use during the hot summer months. Plus, I want to add some other recommended products to my arsenal (PB stuff, P21S/S100, Wolfgang, Blackfire, etc.).

I will echo my sentiments from the linked thread on page one.

After all the hype, I didnt find VM all that and a bag of chips. Dont get me wrong its OK product, but not an earth shattering "must have" product as hyped by some. I didn't find it any better or more versatile than AIO or GEPC.

And add WAUD - it made one of my drying WW MF's water-proof and therefore quite useless at its intended job of drying.

Give NXT another shot. It really is a nice product IMO. Very easy to use, tends to darken some colors, and provides a very nice look. Durability can be an issue with NXT though. Don't waste your time on the spray wax. I as well as others found it a PITA to use. Although a few have found a way to make it more user friendly.

#16 and #26 (paste)

- Could not get either to buff off easily, I have found other products much easier to use.

Pinnacle Micro Rejuvenator

- Found it no better than Tide

Gold Class (liquid)

- My only gripe is its lack of durability. Haven't tried their "reformulated" version.

Poorboys EX Sealant

- It has the look, it has the ease of use, but it didn't seem to last very long on my DD. I like it, but end up topping it with a carnuba LSP.

PlastX

- No real "wow" factor, its nothing special. I found Plexus to be superior for polishing plastic....

Poorboys Pro Polish

- seemed a bit difficult to work, I found PwC to be much easier to use.

Mother's Showtime QD

- Smells nice, but is very oily, and i've found Meguiar's and Clearkote's to be better.

QD+

- Should be called a spray wax, cause that is how it is applied/removed.....

Meguiar's Quick Wax

- No better than QD+

Clearkote Carnuba Moose Wax

- Looks ok, very little slickness, even after multiple coats, and waiting after a few days. I tested on several different cars, and ended up using something else. Can't understand why I'm the ONLY one who is disappointed with the product...

#7

- Found it tempermental and hard to use, even after reading Mike P's writeup....

Stoner's Invisible Glass

- Found it to leave streaks on my glass. 20/20 is far better.

4* Spray Wax

- Basically a QD, no significant slickness/shine added. Good thing i only paid shipping for it!

NXT Tech Protectant

- Nothing special, I found Armor All to be a cheaper substitute

Ultra Car Care Products Super Finish UVA Sunscreen

- No durabilty whatsoever. very thin, its basically a spray wax.

S100

- Easy to apply/take off, but it lost slickness, beading action and looks after three weeks. and the jar is way too small!

Obviously, YMMV, But these were the products that disappointed me....

Uh....I'd consider GEPC and AIO to be pretty elite products, so if you believe VM is comparible, I would consider that to be high praise indeed!
