When does meticulous turn into rediculous?

Just curious but what type of car was this? I'm seriously going to laugh if it was a Civic or something lol. I would have told them toshove it, but then again I don't detail except our own cars so I understand why you would have kept at it ($$).

^ Great thought but G35 is mobile, you're not so it doesn't apply here.

It really makes no difference whether you are mobile or not. I refuse to work with someone looking over my shoulder the whole time distracting me from doing my job. Having a peek now and then is fine to see how things are coming but lording over you and doing what this guy was doing is BS and I wouldn't have put up with it.

I agree with you.

How would *you* approach someone who was hovering over my work even if it was at their location? TIA.

I would just explain that in order to do my best work I need to concentrate on what I am doing and that isn't possible with someone "interfering" (for lack of a better or more appropriate word). I would tell them that it's okay to check up occassionally but not stand and watch because it's too distracting. That being said I have had a couple of customers that I have allowed to sit and chat while I worked because I had extra time and they were just really cool people - very rare though. Coincidentally, what kind of car was this that you were working on?

I'm the same way. I will let some people watch, but only if I get a postive "vibe" from them, and if they ask/are cool about it. I've had to tell some guys that they were slowing me down/getting in the way. TBH when you do good work like you do Sean, you can command that kind of respect. I wouldn't worry about offending a customer, you're a polite guy - just tell then politely that in order to do your best work you need to be left alone.

I personally think the client was looking at your process so closely to see if he could copy it. Don't be surprised if he becomes a detailer in his part of the woods.

I agree with that, sounds sus!

I dont understand why it should matter what kind of car it is? If he is getting paid to do the job then it really shouldn’t matter what kind of car it is. A job is a job..

I applaud the OP for sticking it out and making it through the entire detail. If the customer started walking around the car with the brinkman or sun gun, I would have taken it away from him and asked him not to touch my equipment. I also would have told them that if they wanted to chat, they could wait until the detail was finished and that I would address any concerns then. Thats how I operate on mobile jobs or even when a car gets dropped off. I make sure that I understand the customers needs and I always try to explain what I can do to satisfy them.

This is why I always put my headphones in on some mobile jobs where the customer is sitting in a lawn chair in the driveway watching. Not only is there presence distracting, its also nerve-wrecking because of all the subjective views on detailing.
