whats a good commission rate to market products?

I have recently been offered the opportunity to become the statewide sales agent for a national detailing supply company Malco. The guy whom wants to hire me says he only paid the last guy 8.5% commission but the last guy only had 20 contacts that he worked with & never properly worked the market field. That seems low to me but am not sure how much would be a fair rate. What rate do you guys think would be an appropriate commission if I was working this as a full time job?

Just being an affiliate can earn up to ten percent.

Many times this is around five percent.

If you are going to be full time with this, you might want to structure

a deal that is more beneficial the more that you succeed.

Your commission growing as you increase company's sales

sounds mutually beneficial.

If the other guy only had 20 contacts, then there is much ground

to improve upon. One of the most important will be how you interact

with the owner. More specifically, how you keep him appraised of your

work so that he understands the quality of work and the hours that you put into it.

If it was me, I would find out his max numbers. How much product would you need

to sell to earn max commission, and how much the max commission could get to.

These are important numbers if you want to plan a future with the company. Your

focus on this will show that you are dedicated to building this.

Plus, if you learn the max numbers, you can structure the percentages that you would

need I for the beginning stages of your relationship. If you never ask, you will never know.

Keep us informed.

Eta: zero experience or knowledge of Malco, so can't comment on that.

are you selling the products, or just setting up shops with the lead?

I would think that 15% commission from all leads from that day on would be good...or a 30-40% markup would be good if selling.

If your area did $1,000,000 in annual sales you would make $85,000/yr = not good considering the annual sales.

Is the 8.5% the beginning of a tiered commission structure? Is there a base pay?

The last offer I received from a local chemical distributor was more that double that %.

If you are being brought on as an independent rep that Eric's figures would be more inline. Also, Eric brought up a good question. What exactly would your responsibilities be?

Also question if they will pay for your travel, hotel, gas

while selling their products. Otherwise you can get behind quickly.
