What products to use for my Onyx Black IS300?

Well I have read many threads about the onyx black not having clearcoat. So I'm thinking my 04 IS300 doesn't have it. Are there any products out there you all recommend. I'm thinkin about buying the PC with the Sonus SFX Polishing Pads. I currently use Zaino products and love them but there are so many swirls on my car due to not knowing better and for the first 8 months of owning the car I took it to the local car wash. Any ideas as to what to use to get rid of swirls, or drastically reduce them? What Proucts should I purchase or what can I use with my Zaino? Any suggestions would be great. Thanks guys.

Any experience Terry with it? I know its new so I just wanted to see your opinion of it. Also if you ahve any pics with results that would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure what would be the best way to find out if it doesn't have clearcoat. If it doesn't how much more careful do I have to about the products I use on it? Please let me know. Thanks.
 
Every new car has at least one clear coat. You would know if your car doesn't have a clear, you would get black all over your polish and wax applicators.

Hmmm would it be noticeable if you put the polish on by hand. I have applied zaino by hand but i dont apply a lot of pressure. Here's one of the threads I read that said Toyotas/Lexus don't have a clearcoat.

I will try to post picture of my car with swirls later on tonite to see if I can get some tips as to what products to use.
 
I just cant believe that a new car wouldn't have clear. I would be pissed if my car didn't, especially since you can buy a brand new hyundia for like $8k and even it has a clear. I would ask toyota or lexus directly. I know that my 03 toyota tundra has clear. Maybe what people think is paint comming off on their pads really is, but their clear must have been damaged or something.

Yea man I mean i was shocked to realize this myself I mean I would figure my car which MSRP is over 36K would come with a clear coat. Being that I'm a noobie I wanted to hear from people but from reading around the forum it only seems that Toyota/Lexus does not put clear coat on non metalic blacks. It's only the blacks that don't come with clear coat apparently? I don't know please can some one advise me as to how I can test out wheter my car has a clear or not. I guess I could call the dealer and find out.
 
Well I just called my local Dealer. Lexus of stevens Creek here in Northern California. I taled to the Sales Manager and he confirmed that none of the Black Onyx Lexus have a clearcoat. He told me that Lexus just adds several layers of black paint and this is why it does not need a clearocat. :think: :hm Well now what to do what to do? What suggestions do you all have now for my non clearcoat Black IS300. I want know whether I should buy a PC and the sonus sfx pads. If so what products to use. Let me know guys. Thanks.
 
What he said ^^. That really sucks about the paint though, I wouldn't imagine that it would last as long as clear.

clear coated cars AS LONG as he maintains it properly. I've suggested to others who may not have all the equipment to take out minor swirls to have a professional do the job IF they don't want to do it themselves.



Afterwards, you can just buy the necessary materials (waxes, glazes, sealant, etc.) to maintain a swirl-free paint job.



Food for thought.

Clear coat isn't " better " so to say as long as proper UV components are added and such . It makes for easier repairs if small blends and such are needed though .

I have a 2004 Lexus LS430 and I can definetly say that the car does have clear coat on it. I have polished and waxed the car frequently and even when using a polishing compound there is no black residue on my pads or cloth.

The dealers and sales reps truly piss me off with their lack of knowledge on the cars that they sell. When shopping for the LS I test drove a Mercedes E500. My wife inquired to the salesman as to what portions of the interior were leather-- to which he replied all of the surfaces were. At that time I reached back and put my hand in the pouch behind the front seats and asked him where they got cows that had vinyl on the inside of their hides. He then said you know more about these cars than I do. Great statement for someone trying to sell a $65,000 car. :wall

This is not true. Sales people don't know jack! I just asked my friend who owned a IS300 and owned a body shop. He said that it does have a clear coat. Whoever is telling you it doesn't is full of ****. All cars these days have clearcoats.
 
It is likely that it has a clear coat. I have an '06 Lexus RX 400h black onyx. I e-mailed Lexus directly about mine. They responded that it had a clear coat and was not single stage. Search on this forum under my user name and "clear" and/or "Lexus" and you'll find a thread in which another Autopian had info that Lexus only started putting a clear coat on black in '02 or '03, but that since then, all have had clear.
 
Does S2000's have single stage paint? I don't think it's that unlikely that an IS300 has no clean either, although I would try to get that information from as reliable a source as possible Of course you could just take some scratchx down there and see if you get black on the pad - that would tell you. ;)

I can confirm from first hand polishing experience Pre-2002 and 2003 models do NOT have clear coat on black. I have a 2000 RX300 Black Onyx with no clear. You should see my pads after polishing!



Yes Lexus did start putting on clear coats due to consumer complaints, but the non-clear coat was actually better in that swirls were less noticable and it was easier to work on.
