you know it's funny you guys say don't switch back and forth from conventional to synthetic because I have a friend who has a 2000 Civic Si who constantly changes from the two and his car is running fine. He states that he puts what he can afford, HA, I find this crazy but hey it ain't my car and I'm curious to see what and if there will be any effects on his car. As for me it's castrol syntec 5w-30 everytime without fail because of the turbo :D

I do know that earlier formulations of synthetic oils allowed for leakage in an engine that has been using regular oil for a long period, but I'm pretty sure that mobil 1 and other manufacturers have corrected this leakage problem. It is a hot debate on some forums. I would give it a try and if you notice leaking, switch back to regular oil.

I would suggest Redline, Royal Purple, or Mobile 1. You can switch back and forth just not mix the products toghether. Mileage wouldnt matter unless you are breaking in your car and you would want to use conventional oil to seat the the rings etc. properly.

You cant go wrong with Mobil 1. Redline is probably one of the better oils, but I believe that it is not API certified, so you might lose you engine warranty if you use it.

The nice thing about Mobil one is that it is available EVERYWHERE and very inexpensive.

Your best bet is to go to www.bobistheoilguy.com and look around to see what other people have used for your same car and the results they got from oil tests.

Last time I was on the bob forum I read a post that oils that have a large gap between oil weights, like 0w-40, break down faster than a 5w-40 and 10w-40 oil weight. so take that into consideration when choosing an oil weight. I may be wrong though.

Only if you use the synthetic racing oil. They have a racing oil and a regular synthetic.

i got a honda civic and use mobil 1 5w-30 even though manual says 5w-20...manual..bleh...my next car i will use the 0w as it is cold in nj and startup is when my engine take the most abuse...no long trips or abuse here, i would switch to 0w now but i got 2 six cases of mobil 1 5w-30 and about 20 honda filters.. :shocked overkill ... :sosad not for an autopian:D

I want to try the Amsoil- but I can't seem to find any in massachusetts. I've read on another site that Mobil 1 supposedly is no longer a fully sysnthetic and has adulterated their base stocks. Anyone else heard that?

I'd like to use a full synthetic with pure sysnthetic base stocks. That being said right now I've got Mobil 1 both the 1994 E420 and 1994 E500. Every so often I put Castrol synthetic in the E500.

Do any of you notice a difference between Mobil 1 and Amsoil....and where are those Amsoil tests exactly??

I use Pennzoil Synthetic 5W-30. I notice that not too many people around here use it. It's given great results after I switched from conventional oil this past Fall.

My truck is on German Castrol 0w30 with Lube Control right now. I'm a strong believer in superior lubrication and engine cleanliness as well good filtration. Before that I was running back and forth from Amsoil to M1(Mobil1)

Although I would like to clear 1 thing up. Switching back and forth regardless of mileage or engine from synthetic to conventional shouldn't be a big deal. Although depending upon how long you've used conventional before making the switch to synthetic, you might want to look into a product called Auto-rx. www.auto-rx.com this will help clean out the engine and doesn't contain any solvents. I am by no means a salesperson for this product. This post is only for me being helpful, plain and simple.

Though I think now that I have Lube Control, I'm going to go back to dino and because Lube Control makes any oil last longer, except Non Detergent oil. Just my $02,,,,AR

It's the Castrol Syntec that is not a "real" synthetic. Mobil sued Castrol for purporting their oil to be a fully synthetic like Mobil 1, and lost, thereby redefining the marketing meaning of "synthetic". There was an editorial by Pat Bedard about this in Car & Driver magazine, the text of which can be found at the Mobil 1 website.

Just an FYI guys Mobil has released a new exteded drain interval Mobil1 and extended life Mobil1 Oil Filters. In addition to the standard Mobil1, you can now get Mobil1 Extended Performance with a 15,000 mile or 1 year drain interval that is backed by a guarantee.

They have also released a 5000 mile drain interval conventional oil and a 7500 mile drain interval synthetic blend.

This worries me a bit. Not the 5,000 mile drain interval, but the 15,000.

How so? You can and will still be able to get the standard Mobil1. The new oil is called Mobil1 Extended Performance. I can't see myself using it but, for those that are into extended drain intervals they now have another choice other than Amsoil.

Don't newer hondas use 5w-20?

Yes. The new ones do use 5w20. Some walmarts have it and you can also find mobil one 5w-20 at autozone.

Do some research at BITOG, synthetic is not always the best choice. It depends on many things. The same debates exist about oils that exist about car wax. The big difference with oil is that you can send a sample to a lab to have a conclusive result, unlike the personal preferences debated here.

Mobil doesn't make the Mobil One in a 5w-20. They have a 0w-20 that meets the spec though.:)

I've run all sorts of oil through my engine. In the last five or so years, it has seen, Amsoil, Mobil 1, Royal Purple and German Syntec. I got my best wear numbers from the Syntec.

I cleaned off my oil shelf, so my car currently has a blend of Amsoil in it. I've got 10W-30, 5W30 and Series 2000 0W-30.
