I would like your opinion on which motor oil that can be readily available at a store is better? for example Castrol, Penzoil, etc. Also i would like to know if you us synthetic, synthetic blend, or conventional oil and maybe even why. I'm asking this because i figured people here would be knowledgeable about this stuff.

I've been using Castrol GTX 10W-30 for the past couple of years in my toyota. You can find it in almost any auto parts store, and it's not that expensive.

What kind of car are you asking about? What year? How many miles on it? How often do you change the oil? Driving patterns? Cost constraints?

car: 2004 honda civic non-vtec

miles: 4,000

oil change intervals: 5,000 milee

a lot of city driving, quick accelerations, and i would be willing to spend up to $5 a quart of oil.

Mobil 1 0W-40 or 5W-30, every 4k miles in an Audi 1.8T. Need a synthetic for the turbo--E05 gets real hot, glowing red after a hard drive. 17.8k miles on it.

Amsoil is an excellent choice from a mechanics point of view (me). From all the test reviews i've seen it totally blows away the competitors in tests that actually mean something. The reports i've seen are from independant labs, not the tests done by a company on it's own promoting it's own product (like quaker state does).

I think you can get away with putting synthetic in your car since its pretty new. I'm pretty sure though you can't switch back and forth from synthetic to conventional. Once you go synthetic you gotta keep it that way.

you know it's funny you guys say don't switch back and forth from conventional to synthetic because I have a friend who has a 2000 Civic Si who constantly changes from the two and his car is running fine. He states that he puts what he can afford, HA, I find this crazy but hey it ain't my car and I'm curious to see what and if there will be any effects on his car. As for me it's castrol syntec 5w-30 everytime without fail because of the turbo :D

10W30 Mobil 1 fully synthetic with mobil 1 filter on a 2001 mitsubishi eclipse GT. The benefits of synthetic are incredible! I have seen many engines with over 100K that have been using synthetic and the internals look like day 1. If you can't switch due to high miles, make sure to use a good filter. Avoid fram filters at all cost since the carboard inside them can break off and damage your engine.
