What is acceptable?

So.. I dont know if its another horror story as I have yet to really see the car in full lighting. But I just picked up my black saab wagon from the shop after a rear end collision. Today I see the damage the shop has done to my car... Am I being too picky? but what can be expected from a shop? There is orange peel all over the new trunk and rear bumper... Second there is paint in between the plastic trim and the bumper.. Also they did a touch up job on a door panel from a previous run in with a bush.. Looks like they used nail polish not that bad but it was laid on with a small brush.. The paint is bubbling.. like they didnt wet sand it down etc. I wish I had my camera so I could take some pictures.

Questions:

Am I being too picky?

How much Orange peel is acceptable?

Is it right to have paint connecting trim to fender?

And paint bubbling? WHAT!

What do I do?

I will try to get a camera to give a better idea. But what do I do now? There apparently a good shop (so i was told)... And deal in some nice cars but come on... It was all insurance that covered it but what now? Is it my responsibility?

Tell your insurance company you are not happy with the job at all.

Sounds like they did a horrible paint job or did not paint. The shop I now use removes EVERYTHING so they don't have tape marks.

Insurance jobs suck usually because the places deal with the insurance and not the owner and they can usually get away with fast crappy overpriced jobs.

Sorry to hear about this. Also sorry to say that I don't know what the insurance company can/will have to do with your getting satisfaction; I've always dealt directly with the shop(s) doing the work and I lay it on them to make me satisfied. If this shop says the insurance payed them and they don't care about you, you might be in a tough spot.

1) No, repairs should generally be undetectable. Well, I can often spot them but I have to really work at it. Yours sounds awful and I wouldn't accept it.

2) The repaired area should match the factory level of OP on the rest of the car. Period. That's part of what makes for a good repair and part of what you're paying for.

3) Absolutely not! That's gonna cause trouble down the road. Sheesh, that's really bad.

4) Sheesh x2, that's even worse. They should be embarassed and fall all over themselves making excuses and offering to fix it.

5) Take it back and politely but firmly point out all these problems and say how it's not the caliber of work you a) were expecting and b) willing to accept. I'd approach it like "of course you're gonna want to make this right...how do you plan to fix this stuff so the car looks decent again?", as if their redoing it is a no-brainer. You might point out that you wouldn't be caught dead in something that looks like this and you wouldn't even want to try trading in something so poorly repaired. They really oughta be reasonable about giving you something decent, but it's scary that they thought that [crappy] work would be OK.

Thanks guys thats all really helpful. Well the insurance company paid me then I paid him. So anyways I know I am just very disapointed in all of this.. it was a shop my dad and his friend suggested to me. So I will make sure that it all gets redone.. I mean the paint in between the trim and the bumper looks like ...POO... and there also tape marks on the bottom edge of the trunk.

That seems to happen a *lot*, people go with a family/friend recommendation and things turn out badly, sometimes leading to hurt feelings/etc.

Hope you get some satsifaction.

Bummer part is that had the insurance company paid the Shop, you could simply say "unacceptable", and the ins co would have to work on your behalf until you are 'made whole again'. Now, you've lost a lot of leverage, and really just hopr that the Shop can and will make it right, to your not unrealistic expectations

Good Luck!

Jim

I have to agree with Jim. In the case of insurance, it is better to let them pay the shop.

Basic rule of thumb, if you can see any problems with the repair or the painting, it is unacceptable.

wow that door is horrible. I would have that redone. Why didn't you want them to paint it instead of trying to use touch up paint?

I am having it all redone! Believe me after the holiday I am marching in there and pointing everything out to them....

I told them to look at the door and see what they could do.. He said sure.. Well this is his result.. I think he got lazy.. Can't you tell from his touch up job

Who picked the shop? You or your insurance company? If it's your shop and the insurance company paid to fix it right and the shop didn't do it right, it's not your insurance company's problem. Its' between you and the shop. If the shop was referred to you from your insurance company(DRP), your insurance company will help make it right. Most, if not all insurance companies get audited quarterly and if they don't pay to fix a car correctly, they get in trouble. The repair should fit the vehicle. I won't pay to remove trim on a piece of crap car with damage on the panel getting fixed. If the old damage didn't bother the person prior to the new damage, then the tape line shouldn't either. Of coarse, there's exceptions to many cases.
