What Happened to My Paint???

Alright, it got up to about 55 degrees yesterday and I had a chance to wash my car by hand instead of the auto car wash. I rinsed the car without the nozzle and I noticed my roof wasn't beading or sheating water. WTF? The rest of the car was sheating water. I currently had an application of AIO two months ago topped of by PS. Now on the first of this month I had a chance to apply another coat of PS. Between then and now, I probably have four application of Pinnacle QD, maybe more. What happened to the roof??

Dried the car and decided to apply PS on it. The paint felt as if it was very dry. WTF?? (I don't know if I can explain how it was) Each pass over a new portion of the paint felt as if I'm removing a dry layer of paint. I had to put more PS on the pad than I normally would. I wanted to make sure that the pad was lubricated enough so it doesn't do anything to the paint. This is the first time that I've experienced this detailing. I didn't even get this when I detailed a 99 Sentra that never been waxed before. Since the light was minimal, I couldn't see very well the final out come. From what I could see the paint came out great as usual. This occurance just got me a little worried. Could it be that the PS than I've applied has been stripped of by the auto car wash? I hope someone out there knows what I'm trying to explain and could shed some light into this. Thanks.:nixweiss

It sound to me that you have some type of contamination on the roof. Could be tree sap or industrial fall out. Try claying the roof and apply another coat of AIO and then your favorite wax.

PS = Pinnacle??? I don't know much about it but isn't it carnuba .. Just a thought .. if your using drive through touchless washes some use very harsh detergents .. maybe it lingered on the roof and stripped the PS.

Well, 8 weeks from Souveran (assuming that's what PS is) is not too bad. No complaints from me if that were my car.

I'll bet whatever is in that QD stripped off some of the wax. Some QD's have alcohol in them and that'll take off wax lickety-split. Who knows what's in Pinnacle's QD....

Anyway, no harm done it seems. You applied another coat of wax and everything's back to normal. It's just a reminder to rewax a little more often.

I was only able to wax yesterday because the weather cooperated. Today it went back to the 20's and below and it's snowing.

I was using this kit on my Z. http://www.autogeek.net/sokit.html

It's the Pinnacle/Souveran kit. The QD that I was using came with the kit, it's suppose to "extend the life of the initial waxing".

I'm thinking back to see if I parked somewhere where it could have contaminated, can't think of one. As far as cleaning the glass, I use Stoners and I always spray the MF instead of the glass.

Since the beginning of the month I've washed and detailed my Z nine times so I can't think of any reason why the paint would be in this condition. I guess the carwash is the culprit here. I'll try to get in contact with owner and ask him if he uses recycled water and the type of soap he uses in his machines. Thanks to all, I'll you guys updated.

BlueDragonZ- Given all the info you've provided, I'm not sure why the roof is acting differently from the trunk or the hood, but generally, as Bretfraz said, Souveran isn't the most durable/protective stuff out there. I never got much out of it in those terms during the winter. And the Crystal Mist DOES have some wax in it, but you can't really expect too much from it.

*I* would switch to something a bit more heavy-duty during the winter months and save the Souveran for nicer weather.

Yeah, the "pure" carnauba products will never last on a daily driver for more than 4 weeks or so and still offer any protection. They're just too fragile.

If you want the most durable carnauba product, look at Blitz Wax...it's 1st class.

A polymer sealant of some sort should offer much better longevity during the winter season.

Or one can try Meg's #16 or one of the Collinite waxes. Different look from Souveran, but they last for most of the winter (for me), even on vehicles outside 24/7.

I would add SG into your mix. Since you're using the auto wash you're going to see almost immediate degredation of any carnuaba topper, and the AIO won't last long either. If you AIO, do a few coats of SG THEN top it with the wax (or even a Collinite wax for super durability) then you'll be better able to resist the chemicals of the automatic wash and the harsh winter salt.

Since I do like the results that I've been getting with the AIO & PS, I'll probably add SG. Thanks everyone for all your replies.
