Water etching on a clear bra

paint the calipers on the boxster red ?

Have you found a solution to the plastic rear window problem ? Thinking of using 3M SMR on it ?

I think I am keeping the calipers black. I don't want to be labeled a Boxster "S" wannabe! Maybe this time next year I will have my own "S".

My solution for maintenance is inconclusive. After a year and a half of abuse I used 3M Finesse IT on the window to remove some pretty bad scratches. I followed up with Zaino plastic polish. Weekly maintenance is done with Plexus. This is my most successful routine so far. I am open to suggestions for anything better/different. I don't have the perfect solution yet.;)

Hey guys,

I saw a friend of mine today with a black Porsche. He keeps it in great condition, and has a clear bra on the front end of the car. I noticed some water etchings on it, and pointed it out to him. He told me that the person who installed the bra, told him there was nothing he could do about it. I am not sure, but I thought I read somewhere here that someone was able to correct this. I did a search, but was unable to find anything. I am sorry that I don't have any pictures, but I wasn't planning on taking pictures, so all I had was my Blackberry Storm, and with the bad lighting, I wasn't able to get anything worth posting.

If anyone has any experience with this, I would greatly appreciate your input.

Thanks.

Hey Barry...

According the 3M site FAQ's for clear films: "Abrasive polishes and/or rubbing compounds are not to be used."

I've seen quite a few clear films that were etched and I've always wanted to go after the defects... but I always see that quote on the 3M site in my mind and leave well enough alone.

That being said, I'd like to find a car with a yellowed, etched clear film that was going to be replaced anyway and try something like a very light, fine polish with a PC, after taping the edges of course. I would think that might help the etching a bit and if you didn't use much pressure, or a rotary (heat).. you might be able to help the film out a bit.

Good question.

I just had a LONG conversation about this with a guy here in KC that does clear bra installs and has one of the top shops around and here is what he told me to use. I haven't used it yet, but I plan on doing so when spring rolls around. He said to clean it first with Meguiars Mirror Glaze Clear Plastic Cleaner and to follow up with Meguiars Clear Plastic Polish. He said he'd cleaned up one that was almost totally yellow and it had never been waxed since the install and made it look like new. He also had a product, that I picked up while I was there, made by XPEL that is specifically for cleaning/polishing the material, but I can't seem to find it online and it's at home, so I can't get the name for you.

Good luck, but he was very adamant about how well the Meguiars stuff would work on it.

One product I just came across that sounds similar to the stuff I bought is Adam's Clear Polish & Protection.

Again, good luck, I'll be interested in what you find that works!

Hey Husker,

Thanks for the response. That sounds promising. Did he mention weather or not to do it by hand, or is it safe enough to use a DA?

Sorry Barry, he didn't mention either way. Knowing the bra that's on my car, I wouldn't hesitate to take a DA to it, it's pretty darn durable. I've used my DA with polish on it numerous times with pretty decent luck and it's never felt like it was dragging or anything.

Premier Protective Films - PF1 TT is an advanced agent that attacks the marks and transfers at the micro-level to loosen up these particles so that it may be safely wiped off with a clean microfiber towel. Most importantly, it can be utilized on paint protection film with a clear coat safely. Simply clean the area in which it will be applied. Next spray on and in five seconds; begin wiping with a clean micro fibre towel. Repeat these steps as needed.

Zaino Z-CS Clear Seal or PF1 Crystalline - wipe on, and wipe off (WOWO) walk away, no buffing, just allow to air dry. Use on paint, glass, wheels, plastic, clear bra, or trim for the protection, durability, slickness, and gloss. All surfaces are protected against potentially damaging exposure to sun or ultra-violet light with UV inhibitors.

Do you know where I can get the PF1 TT?

Thanks for the response.

I use Blackfire Gloss Enhancing Polish to good effect on Paint Protection Film and on the odd ocasion a light finishing polish if needs be, we look after a GT3that's been entirely wrapped in the film and GEP took out 90% of the defects :)
