Want to Make Much Much More Than You Currently Do?

How about the K.I.S.S. method, keep it simple stupid. Why would anyone need to reference stuff 551 BC if they are just detailing cars, jeepers.

If you’re charging too much, charge less.

If you’re not charging enough, charge more.

If you’re an *******, be a nicer person.

Show examples of work.

I could go on forever, how is it that people need books to run a detailing business? Just get out there, don’t act like a *****, choose what type of clientele you want, charge enough money and spread the word. It seems like common sense to me. It’s not like we’re putting monkeys into outer space.

K.I.S.S.=Out.Of.Business.Very.Fast

Business is a science. Only the successful ones know it. Everything I do for my business, I try to break it down into the most basic concepts such as numbers and percentages. Analytics in particular.

For you spread the word might mean spread the word. For me it means increasing my site's google exposure 5% more every week. It means figuring out which site layout results in the greatest number of calls. What age group and profession of clientèle are willing to pay the most. Etc.

If you want to succeed in this dog eat dog business with $25 details going around, you need to know exactly how your business runs.

^^I'm not going to argue with you. Everyone's entitled to their opinion. I'll just point out the main reason I refuse to argue or have a discussion with someone like you...

I think that works fine and business will stay running, but this thread is about maximizing and reaching the highest, or as high as possible, potential within the business and yourself as a business owner, so KISS method doesn't apply imho.

hahaha so if your not reading books, listening to audio books, hanging off Donald Trump’s junk, using what people had to say thousands of years ago to detail a car for profit…..yes…..a car then you’re telling me you just cant cut it as a profitable detailer?

It’s not rocket science here.

Am I profitable? ..... detailing is a side job.

Maybe if you stopped buying books.... spend the time you’d use to read the book to detail a couple more cars per week then you wouldn’t have to worry about why you’re not making as much as you want. Every dollar you spend on a book ....

The rest will fall into place if you have common sense.

Some simple advice; time is money. .

With all due respect,

I know for a fact that 80% of detailing start ups fail within the first 6 months.

How many aerospace engineers fail find a job after graduating from college? There are great detailers out there , perhaps like your self, who can not make enough money doing what they love to do.

The rest does not fall into place, it's much more complicated than that. That's what we were discussing on this forum.

Time is money for an employee, value is money for a business owner.

I am not arguing I was discussing the topic at hand. So you are not a profitable detailing business owner. Have no intention to start a detailing business it looks like. What are trying to prove here? Successful detailing business owners are as smart if not better than any other business owner out there, plus they are doing something they love, how can you beat that.

I agree 100%.

More important than reading books is reading your demographic; doing that will define your business and maximize your frequency of work, followed by improving efficiency to increase your net profit.

Just the same as a great detailer can be a bad business owner, a shelf of books won't make you a success.

Books alone simply motivate some people.

Books require reader comprehension and interpretation to be effective.

K.I.S.S. and 4 hour manager are great for ovarian/sperm lotto winners. When you dont need money, who cares!

Sadly I agree with you. I think this forum in particular is more geared towards that kind of "professional". Because of that, and the often closed minded attitude that comes with it, a lot of the true business people don't post here. I know I rarely post here because of it. They are out there though. I can think of a few on Mobilworks off the top of my head but even there some of the busiest seem to remain anonymous.

Read the very 1st page of this thread, and then just saw this post and it caught my eye. I believe this is very true. There is a lot of talent on this site and some very professional, respectable detailers. He mentioned Mobileworks. A forum like that is geared towards making money while still doing the job right. At Autopia, which is a really good site too, but geared more towards the enthusiast and single operator business's out there. The thing about some of the people on this site is that one day they'll be asking how to use a Porter Cable and two days later they post that their starting a "Professional Detailing Business" and need out feedback on their business cards and website. Most of the people over there don't post over here because they don't need to, there mostly seasoned veterans in the industry that don't need to ask questions that they already know and have to little time to invest answering any of them due to long, long hours trying to build wealth, not an online popularity contest; and have built business's that are really bringing in some outstanding profits. These are the guy's with anywhere from 2-10 high end vehicles in there shop at any given time. They have alot invested in Scissor lifts, detailing stations, etc, etc. I'm not saying at all that the solely professional sites are better(there's plenty of bad apples there too that don't have a clue), just different goals.

Sorry to hurt your sensitive feelings Brad. I guess college didn't teach you to have thick skin, but you'll eventually learn that as you become more successful in business. :secret

Man, your just another a** that hides behind the disguise of an internet forum. Maybe if we ever meet in person, I will show you how thick my skin is.

You do not know the first thing about me David. It is so funny how people like you talk all day under the comfort of an internet forum..

wow i think most of you missed the boat and dont understand what some are trying to express.

if you cant sell, you cant eat. i was in retail sales prior to starting my business. i managed a 2 million dollar a year retail store for a large tele comm company. if it werent for my sales abilities, i wouldnt have made any money and neither would my sales staff. you have to have a basic understanding of many things when running a business. i also had a shop, but because of some bad decisions on my part i had to close it down. one of them was i bought what the salesman was selling. i refer to the leasing agent who sold me on the local, saying dont worry the owner doesnt care what you, as long as you pay your rent. well he did that to a few too many tenants and it was a business park that was occupied by people who were looking for the easy way out, i wasnt. people spraying cabinets for homes with nothing more than an open door and a fan. needless to say the property owner started to come down on everyone for everything. he had to, it was his business.

back on point, the agent sold me on the idea, the property manager brought me back to reality. if the leasing agent had no sales skills, read: people skills, i wouldnt have signed. he was a good sales man and i wanted the space.

i have always said you cant make people sales people. most are born with it or have suffered long and hard to learn. some people on these forums think they are the best detailers and they might be, but that doesnt make them business people. its one thing to be able to detail a car and a totally different thing to run a multi employee business. managing attitudes, coaching, setting goals, measuring goals, attaining goals, enforcing discipline those are things the books dont teach. i have read a lot of books and take what i can apply and leave the rest. i have managed as many as 25 direct reports, with 20+ years retail and i still dont know chit, i try every day to learn from anyone i can. sometimes the best lessons are those you dont see coming.

thats my 2 cents, i know i'm not a popular guy here and i dont mind. i'm here to learn and try to be the best i can be. IRL i think i am well liked and have a loyal customer base and some really good friends. but again its all about selling yourself. we do it every day, in work, relationships, friends. you might not realize it, but when you went on that first date, you were selling yourself, not literally i hope. but you put on your good clothes, made sure not to be rude, tried to pay attention, it was all basic selling skills.

ranting again, must be the turkey.

Wow this has turned into the battle of the morons..... Seriously you all have you own opinions... Keep them. You're obviously not about to change the minds of the other participants in this friggin debacile. Why this is continuing I have no clue? Just agree to disagree and move the frick on... Don't any of you have actual work to do or something?
