Tried Turtle Wax ICE Liquid Clay Bar today and have to say...

Y'know, bad things happened in this thread once before because posters strayed off-topic and got just a little too stabby with one-another.

More talk about the thread topic, and less snark from all involved, please.

o my god your using a turtle wax product what will the rest of the autopians think ? i wanted to try it my self , so now that there are some good reviews i ll go grab some and try it

Hate to be the bearer of bad news...I also fell victim to the Turtle Wax Ice...yeah, it looked great for about 4 days..then the shine went away and it looked like @!#$% after that. Bottom line..., this product has NO durability. I recommend using a real polish and wax. You will find plenty combinations available..They certainly aren't at Wally World either. Check out autogeek.net, or detailcity.org to name a few.:2thumbs:

TigerMike,

Check out this article (written by the mayor, DavidB) for good info on clay and abrasives: The Making of a New Detailing Clay

Very good read, thanks much for sharing the link! Makes good sense to me, but I can swear reading about a particular maker of clay that claimed it "pulled" stuff from the surface rather than abrading. Ahh well, that was a loooong time ago anyhow, so I stand corrected.

Mike

Do you really think all TW products are horrible? I happen to think the Platinum line is quite good. I also like their All Wheel and Tire Cleaner--replaced EO for me.
+1 on the Platinum Series

I haven't tried all of the products in that line, but I can't get enough of the Ultra Gloss QD. I seen some Platinum wheel and tire cleaner and the leather conditioner/cleaner at Big Lots the other day, I may have to go back and get a bottle of each and try them out.

And by the way, I read in this thread that someone thought clay is like a sandpaper in that it scours the finish to remove contaminants. I disagree slightly with that information. Common consumer grade clay *does* pull contaminants out of the paint and it is nothing like sandpaper. If it were like sandpaper, you'd see paint transfer, and a noticable loss of gloss on the paint.

Mike
This is one of the misconceptions with clay. If it were able to "pull" contaminants out of the paint then you wouldn't have to rub it on the paint, you could just press it against the surface and peel it up and the contaminants would be pulled out. But as we both know, that's not the case.

I think they word it like to avoid scaring off would be customers from buying it. I've been using clay for many years now and I have yet to notice any clay induced marring, but I can see the logic in the clever word play by the marketing people.

They're *are* several TW products (in the Platinum line - notably, the Paste Wax) that I'm rather impressed with.

Haven't tried the Liquid Clay Bar but it does sound *much* like a chemical polish/cleaner. joshtpa, seeing that detailing clay IS an abrasive system, do you think the TW's liquid version may simply be marketing spin on a pre-wax cleaner (TW version of Mothers/Megs step 1)?

This, of course, doesn't imply that its good or bad. Just trying to identify its true nature. :)

At first I thought it was just a marketing thing. But I did try it, and although it is not the easiest product to work with, it is definately faster than claying. It does leave the finish able to pass the hand in the baggie test. Will it replace clay? No, of course not. Does it work in a time crunch or a car that is not that bad? Absolutely.

I will agree with this one....it is a quick fix product.. Maybe we can add that to our list of jargon...QFP (quick fix product) LOL!!:woohoo:

Why on earth would you ban a product without ever trying it?

I refer to a previous post .

Or that I actually try a product before I say never....Your obviously a nube.

Ok....enough bashing.. Let me clear the air and rephrase by saying that I actually used the TW ICE Clay AND Wax..And did not like it..Hence the NEVER use another TW Product. Happy now?:nomore:

Well, that's just about enough of that crap.
