Tried the Rotary. Failed : ( Help me out with prodcut choices.

Can You Hear Me

Okay. So from my previous thread you guys know that I stepped up to a rotary. Today I detailed my dads black e46 330i. I busted out the rotary with high hopes to demolish all the terrible swirls that my dads car had. I went with the least aggresve polish that I had in my arsenal (p21S and CG pro polish) Put a moderate amount of product on the hood and began to work it in. Not as hard as it seems! As long as I kept the machine flat to the surface (can be hard on hoods that have big creases or raised sections) it didnt really jump around much if you keep it around 1000-1500 rpms and just let it glide back and fourth always moving it. But when I put the light down onto the paint and wiped away the product the swirls seemed to remain :nixweiss So I stepped up to 3M Extra Cut. I sprayed my purple wool pad with pad conditioner and put some product on the hood again. Began to work product in untill it wore away to a fine dust. Wiped product off to see that the swirls STILL remained :hairpull . I am FOR SURE a novice at rotary and still have much to learn but I am kinda confused as to whats going on. I didn't burn the CC or anything so I dont think i was going too harsh? But it defantly seemed that it would have enough cut. Also the 3m seemed to leave some swirls behind as the machine worked in. Please help me :sadwavey: Sorry for the long sob story. I have searched for a good varaity of polishes to have for a rotary but havent found much. I am on autogeek right now trying to stock up for next weekend. I am hearing all the rant and rave about m105. Is this a bad idea for a rotary novice to use? I plan on using on a friends beater that he would care less if i burned through before I use on a customers car or my own though.

Thanks again everyone.

Nick, I would not recommend M105 for a rotary novice.

Any chance you can take some pics of the areas you polished with 3m ECC, then some areas that where not polished? Take them with halogens or in the direct sun.

Sounds like you worked it long enough as ECC should be "dry buffed"

Is this what it looked like after 3M ECC?

That is what a black vette will look like after 2 passes of ECC and a yellow wool pad, after that I would have to go with a green wool w/ Presta 1500 which is followed by 3M ultra fina.

Most will use SIP on a rotary with an orange pad for the 2nd step. Then you can go 106ff with a white in some cases. I prefer 3Ms ultra fina with the blue 3m foam pad for the finishing polish.

You might need to move the machine slower with a hair more pressure to correct things. I'd try to get your technique down before buying M105 - it's got a bit of a learning curve to it.

3M EC and wool both leave marring on paint so its no suprise your paint should look worse. Its the nature of the beast. The marring left behind by wool and even EC is "fine" in texture and almost a haze, so you should be able to see if the orginal swirls where removed through the haze.

Range Rover after compounding to remove deep imperfections (see the haze, but there are no swirls visible through it)

gmBlack3a- that is EXACTLY what it looked like. My camara is still in the garage from taking pictures but I don't think there is a need to upload but it left more of a uniform marring. This explains so much thanks guys. I did NOT have as much hazing as the second picture of the rover. I worked it untill it was a fine fine dust that it would just fall off the pannels/hood. This makes me feel much better about my work. I was very dissapointed with my self! ha. So it sounds like I need to go to the body shop and pick up some 3m ultra.

This is what im thinking for in the future..

3m Extra Cut via rotary and purple wool pad

2nd step- ?

3m Ultra Fina via rotary and 3m blue pad (would a soft foam white pad be a good substitue for this?)

Ps: I have heavy cutting yellow wool pads, red, grey, white, green and blue foam pads that came with the machine. If that helps at all.

Thanks a lot everyone. You guys rock

I wouldn't use the white pad for finishing as it can cause microabbrasions.

Menzerna SIP, Optimum Polish, Menzerna IP, Meguiars #83, Four Star Meduim Cut, etc all make great 2nd step polishes. I prefer Menz SIP for most paint, but carry all of the above.

TH0001- What polishes/pads are you using after the EC. Great job on that rover by the way.. How black should look!

I finish with either UF-SE or Menz106ff (amongst several others). I would try 106ff and a blue pad to see if that will remove the marring from EC. If it doesn't then I would use a middle step polish.

My favorite is SIP on a white CCS pad.

TH0001- You are the man. Thanks to everyone in this thread. I will be picking up these items in the soon future to try on my friends beater this weekend.

One word "Optimum" anything will help you learn with a rotary. The never ending work time gives you alot of time to get use to your rotary without the product drying in 30 secs ! and it also very forgiving to rotary holograms.
