Tried DG #105 this weekend...my thoughts

Well, finally stopped by the CarQuest and picked up some 105, along with some other goodies. Here are my initial thoughts on the 105....(wish I had pics, but I have no internet access at home currently and have no other way to get any pics up) :(

Product: Duragloss #105 Total Performance Polish, new product from the company. Is all synthetic polymer.

Price: About $8 at Carquest...for 16 oz of product. So, for me, every bottle should yield about 32 coats.

Manufacturer Claims: Supposed to be their most durable product to date, claims it can or will last 1 year on the back of the bottle. Never have seem that statement on their other car polishes (111 or 101). Claims to be resistant to acids, bird droppings, and other envirnmental contaminants. Supposed to have some slight cleaning ability...more on that later.

Car applied to and paint condition: 2003 garnet fire Infiniti G35 sedan with excellent paint condition. Little to no contamination, minor/minute swirling, so no polishing done in this detail. Only thing done to the paint lately was about a 1.5 month old application of AW, which was still going strong for me. So, just gave it a wash and went straight to the 105...

Cleaning ability (in my opinion): Virtually none. Pad didn't show any paint transfer, nor was it overly dirty from any "cleaning" action. Also wouldn't even begin to remove slight waterspotting in one area. I would say it was like applying Zaino Z2 or Z5 to the paint, as far as cleaning ability goes.

Spreadability and consistency of the product: 105 is a thin purple, grape smelling liquid that spreads very easily onto the paint. Makes thin applications pretty easy, but years of Zaino use have taught me how to do thin anyway. Used probably .5 ounce to do the full car (G35 sedan). This product will work better in thin coats. When applying to the paint, the product film gives off a very familiar sheen in the sun. I've seen this sheen before.

Dry time: I let it sit outside (no garage) for about 1 hour, while I cleaned the wife's car. Was completely hazed and ready to buff, but honestly, I think it was dry and buffable at about 10-15 minutes. I applied to the whole car at once before I buffed off. The manufacturer suggests doing one panel at a time, letting it haze, then buff off. I had no trouble applying to the whole car, and then buffing.

Removal: Pretty easy, buffed away clean with two swipes of a MF towel. No dusting, no white residue in any crevices.

Slickness: Very good! Slickness is great, and seemed to improve as the day went on. Towels just slipped across the surface... I'd compare to the slickness to be as good as UPP or Zaino.

Shine, wetness, depth: VERY reflective, and very wet!! Shine is really incredible, as is reflectivity and wetness. Sharp crisp reflections, is the name of the game here. Sorry, but the product I think it looks closest to is Zaino Z5P. Looks very very similar to me. Depth is pretty good, but a carnauba or overly oily product will obviously have more depth. The 105 gave my red G35 a stand out appearance, with very bright reflections, and a wet looking coating. The little bit of metallic that is in my paint really stood out and was enhanced, really looks good!

Durability: No idea yet, obviously. I am very interested in the 1 year durability claim, so I will be closely monitoring the performance of 105. I applied 1 coat of the product, and did not top with Aquawax or even any QDs. I want to see how durable this product is by itself with no help, under pretty harsh conditions. My car sits outside 24/7 and is exposed to all manner of harmful elements...

Day 2 impression: Still great....still very slick, almost no dust has settled to the paint, which I thought is pretty cool since my car is outside 24/7. Car is staying very clean.

Overall impression: Fantastic!! For the price, the 105 hands down the best OTC product I've used, and I've been through them all. I will still regard 105 and the AW (among DG's other products) as easily at boutique quality level. I've used other lines of boutique products that didn't impress me nearly as much as this product has so far. I will be blown away if the shine, slickness, protection, and durability are there for the long term. I challenge people to try 105 and compare to Z5 and draw their own conclusions. While I admit #111 and Z2 were a bit different, the 105 is strikingly close to Z5, IMO. These are *my* observations, and YMMV.

:up :up from me so far. Along with the new AW, it seems we have another winner from DG!

Comments? Questions? Thoughts? Criticisms? All welcome....

Thanks,

Mike :)

Glad you tried it....I did 3 coats myself to see what difference the appearance would be...It gave it a nice deep THICK look..very wet looking..and clear....I have not used AW yet...and also truck has been staying pretty dust free...with all the construction work in our lot...what is on blows off when driving...like that..

The cleaner is very weak..I got some road marker paint on my CC mag..and I happened to have 105 in the truck..so at lunch went out to clean it..it did not budge it...had to use AIO when I got home and it took it right off...so AIO is a stronger cleaner by far...

so far 1 wash and lots of rain and truck is still very slick and WET looking....and no water spots from the rain...

the 105 finishes off very clear..no muteing at all....

very impressed as to how far the product spreads....less than a 1/2oz for the truck..I did just do a fine mist of AW on the pad so not to start off with a dry applicator..all done by hand..so easy....

Great product for the money....

for those that are curious...NO silicone...No abrasives...very light cleaner...all of their sealants contain no silicones or abrasives....

TM,

I was looking back in your posts and you had made these comparisons before, even when you first joined. Personally, if this product is as like Zaino as you say then I will be happy with the savings, I'm just wondering if you can clarify. Previously you had said,

I've used the DG line for a while also. IMO, they are highly underrated products that can be found locally. Polishes (silicone polymers) seem pretty durable, lasting several months, and are easy to use.

And you have tried 105 before, but you say that you just went down and picked some up. I wanted to know if when you used it before it had a grape scent like you said, or if that was only a characteristic of the new formula. What's the significance of this time trying the 105, more similar to Z than the last time? You also said just the other day'

I will say that after years of using both Z and DG, the lines are so similar that I would have trouble telling them apart if blindfolded (whether by smell or performance or both). I do remember a conversation with Sal long ago, in which he stated to me that he and the DG guys had worked together on formulas (many years ago), but then I think he said his final product was a little different from what the DG guys wanted. After all, I didn't expect him to fully admit to me (or anyone else) that they are very identical.

So I think you are going past just saying the products are similar but they share the same what, polymers? To be honest I think you've sold me on at least trying it, but some clariying would be nice to. I hope you don't mind that I checked the old stuff but I distinctly remembered you saying that stuff about the owner of Zaino the other day.

Well it looks like I've got to get me some of that duragloss stuff. Tried the Aquawax, and was completely blown away by it. Seems to be slicker than freshly applied Blackfire, and application takes no more than 10-15 minutes. Keep us updated on the durability.

Glad you liked it Mike. I have not been disappointed by Duragloss products yet but I haven't tried them all....yet,Lol. Mike

For clarification:

DG - silicone polymer

Zaino- amino functional polymers

Big difference.
Not that it matters, cause they are just different products/companies that share some similarities. Both are very fine.
CAUTION: CONTAINS ALIPHATIC HYDROCARBONS. DO NOT TAKE INTERNALLY. KEEP OUT OF THE REACH OF CHILDREN.
Find what works for you, use it and be happy. http://www.detailcity.org/forums/detailing-product-discussion-misc/19031-ask-sal-why-bother.html

Mike,

You posted on another message that you were checking on discount for forum members. Several people have been asking what you found out. Do you mind replying and letting everyone know. Be nice if you did a follow up.

Thanks

What are the application directions for 105? Do you supposed to apply to entire vehicle and let it dry for 30-60 minutes like EX-P?

Just apply to whole car....let it sit for 15 minutes..till hazed..buff off..just like any sealant...

AL-53 and tester,

What do you think is a better sealant, 111 or 105? What are the differences that you have noticed in look, ease of use and overall suggested use? It appears to me that the DG site makes the 111 to be the wetter glossier of the two, with 105 being more a durable shield. Thanks for the help

I am starting to love the whole line! My 105 is on order, till then I have been using AW (my new go to spray wax), their tire"wet look" shine is another great product that I apply with an applicator and get a very wonderful look that I prefer to PB bnb (great durability with no sling), and their leather conditioner has replaced my other favorites( z10, imperial leather, and pinnacle conditioner) as it is as good/similar but at better cost.

I had the 111 on ..and it looked great..wet and deep..with AW on it also....

The 105 is a better look...wetter and very deep with 3 layers....

they both go on easy..no difference in that...remove the same also..easy...

both are very slick....the 105 seems much clearer on the paint..does not mute the colors...

but both 111 and 105 are very nice looking on paint..with good prep...you will be happy with both...

111 I know is very durable..I went all winter into spring with it and was still beading and glossy in June...
