Tried DG #105 this weekend...my thoughts

thanks AL, but what do you think about layering given that the 105 has slight "cleaning abilities", woudn't it negate the fact that you had a layer underneath it? Also, how does the 105 look with AW on it? Is it compatible?

Thanks again for the help, about to place an order, just want to make the right decision!

DG - silicone polymer

Zaino- amino functional polymers

Big difference.

How do you know? Almost all automotive polish/sealant formulations use curable, aminofunctional silicones.

I got my DG products today so I did my hood since I couldn't wait to play. I washed it, clayed with sonus ultra fine, then used some OP with an Edge 2000 green pad on some light scratches (which didn't product the results I was hoping for, the hairline spider-webbing is still there). Then I used the 652 cleaner, then 601 and without buffing that off, applied two coats of 105. I also have the 111 but chose 105 this time. I sure like the ease of application and removal of this product. It's the easiest product I have ever worked with. Then I sprayed with AW. We'll see how it looks tomorrow in the light.

Same Q here.

update: Just ordered 601,105,951,921,& 481

Curious to see how this line will compare to the Werkstatt products I'm using now.

The name is Amino-fuctional Silicone, it is a hard silicone not a oily one.

Respectfully, not true.

Zaino does not contain amino-functional silicones. Silicone polymers are very poor crosslinkers and as we know quite well Zaino truly cross-links.

TM,

I was looking back in your posts and you had made these comparisons before, even when you first joined. Personally, if this product is as like Zaino as you say then I will be happy with the savings, I'm just wondering if you can clarify. Previously you had said,

And you have tried 105 before, but you say that you just went down and picked some up. I wanted to know if when you used it before it had a grape scent like you said, or if that was only a characteristic of the new formula. What's the significance of this time trying the 105, more similar to Z than the last time? You also said just the other day'

So I think you are going past just saying the products are similar but they share the same what, polymers? To be honest I think you've sold me on at least trying it, but some clariying would be nice to. I hope you don't mind that I checked the old stuff but I distinctly remembered you saying that stuff about the owner of Zaino the other day.

Slickery,

I have never previously used the #105 polish. I have used 101 and 111, but this was my first time to use 105. I don't believe I had ever stated that I have used 105 in the past, but sorry if this was unclear. This past Saturday was my very first time I ever laid hands on 105....and since it's a brand new product from DG, I don't think it would have had another smell in a previous version. AFAIK, this is the first version of the 105 polish.

While I have admitted I believe there were some slight similarities in the 111 to Zaino before, I believe the 105 closes this gap considerably. I don't care about speculation and whatnot, but I do know that both products (105 and Z2) perform identical for *me*. If others see a difference, that's all fine and good. What I see is what I see. I can't help that...

Hope this helps.

I don't believe this is accurately portraying the whole story. You are comparing a specific type of polymer (silicone) with just a generic polymer category. DG is an amino functional polymer as well. Neither Zaino nor DG use silicone oils. DG is able to cross link also, so....?

Do you know what polymer Zaino uses?

Mike,

You posted on another message that you were checking on discount for forum members. Several people have been asking what you found out. Do you mind replying and letting everyone know. Be nice if you did a follow up.

Thanks

Yes, sorry about the lack of updates. I do not believe the Duragloss guys are wanting to do a promotion at this time. It's funny because at first, they seemed very excited about a promotion for the members, then there was no follow through from the company at all. :nixweiss

Honestly, their prices are already very reasonable, so maybe they didn't see a need for a discount at the time. Plus, I imagine, sales are already quite brisk at the moment, which again wouldn't lend to the need to really do a promotion.

What are the application directions for 105? Do you supposed to apply to entire vehicle and let it dry for 30-60 minutes like EX-P?

The directions officially state to actually apply to a small section (i.e. hood, fender, etc), let haze, and buff off. I went ahead and applied to the whole car before buffing.

Is that what fk1 uses too?

Sure. They need to cure as well. When you see that a product has to cure, it uses these type of ingredients.

Old-fashioned, natural wax formulas doesn't have to cure but they are very rare now.

how does this layer, with zaino you can do 3 coats at a time, is this the case with dg?

I would not attempt 3 coats at one time with 105. I personally would wait at least 12-24 hours before the next coat. Duragloss does not have any type of accelerator additive like Zaino to allow 3 coats in a day...in this respect Zaino is unique.

Sometimes brevity can create problems or misundertandings.

Zaino sealant are actually better described as a multi-polymeric formulation that uses non-silicone based (nucleated) polymers.

I once asked Sal several months ago during the Z5Pro beta testing for more specifics about "what" polymers were in his formulation. His answer was, "If I told you, I would have to kill you".;) I value my existence so I changed the subject.

This in no way states that silicone polymers are bad, but denotes one of the specific differences between DG and Zaino.

From the reviews lately DG sound like a good and very easy to use OTC product. :2thumbs:

Nice write-up Mike. Keep us updated on the durability and appearance longevity.

The Duragloss 111 actually says it has silicone in it, the new 105 does not.

Duragloss plainly says the 111 polish uses polymeric silicones.

As far as waht is in Zaino I have a good idea Ron Kethcum has revealed what it was on an detailing forum.

Good point, you are right.

Also, this may be an OTC product, but that means nothing to me. Boutique or otc, whatever, if it is good that's all that matters. I only pay attention to the labeling to know how accessible something is for me. Hey, if #105 happens to live up to the hype and give me comparable results to the other excellent products (PB, zaino ect), and it's otc assesible, great. It means more choices for us.

FWIW, DG is run by a small company, two brothers (both chemists) have, since the seventies, been working/formulating these products. Jerry, one of the brothers, seems very genuine, very appreciative of their customer base and upfront on what they do. They are always, at least the past several times I have called inquiring about a product, available to talk to a customer(seems no different than what a "boutique" company does) like PB (another fav of mine). My .02$.

Can yo direct me where it says contains silicone's...I have not found it on the box or on the site....or from the chemist..from what is told to me it contains a urethane type polymer and acrylic resin of their design... and no silicone's of what sort....

their polymers are of a unique complex that took 100 formulas to get the one that they have now...

Call DG

1-800-638 7245 and ask for Jerry (chemist) in tech support at DG. Really nice and informative gentleman. Jerry actually returned my call because his line was busy when I first called. :2thumbs:

I am paraphasing:

Our 105 is a silicone polymer formula (the good stuff). It has absolutely no acrylic resin or urethane-type polymer in the formulation.
