Thoughts on my detailing packages

I'm with you on this one. I have a pattern and practice response when it comes to engines. I say, "If you want me to do the engine, I'll do it, but I don't charge anything for it and I accept no liability. If the car never runs again - ever - you still have to pay me for the detail. If the water quality guys show up - you get the fine.



I don't think I've done an engine in the last 6 years outside of a dealership.

Not including clay, or charging extra for it is IMHO unprofessional because the vast majority of the time it's required for a good job. I can count on one hand the number of cars in the last three years that didn't need clay and I'm including cars that I've washed once a week and were kept in a garage. It's like charging extra for washing the car before polishing, it's that basic.



There are things that should just be included because they're part of any decent process.

I do think the reduced number of packages is better, and yours do look good.



I also like the idea of having a few exterior options with the interior only option that can be done by itself or packaged into the other ones at a discount. That will make it easier for the customer.



Also, I know you have the packages pretty dummy proof explaining what each step entails, but maybe highlight at the top why your $250 package looks smaller than the $175. Such as Exterior Premium Detail with Paint Correction $250.00 where the customer will immediately think "Oh, the Ultimate does not say that, so I should assume if I want the markings out I need this package." Not suggesting that would happen, but basically, the packages do look good :D

After i posted my updated spec sheet, and updated it again a few hours later and included the claybar. Im probably going to make it a 20 dollar addon to the regular exterior and premium packages. thanks for the comments again!
 
I tell people that any detailer who charges extra for claying a car is sketchy. It's fundamental to a good job - not including it means they're willing to do substandard work.



Add twenty bucks but don't make the clay optional. If you run across a car that doesn't need it, not likely, you can always discount.

I don't offer claying as part of all my packages. I even have one package where there's waxing, but no claying. Bottom line is, you can wax without claying first, I've done it hundreds of times. Yes, your paint is still "contaminated", but the applied wax will do its job none the less. Again, most people don't care about whether the paint surface is as smooth as glass or not, they care about one thing and one thing only, how much will this cost and what am I getting for it.



I'd add the clay in the higher priced packages, but on the lower end ones I'd keep it off.
 
some people call me up and ask for a wash and a clay/wax, I dont do it! I feel that you have to polish after claying! I will do a test panel and SHOW people the differences...it usually sells them on the extra step/cost as beneficial! its a lot easier to show people rather than explain in this industry!



also, to the OP, I would label the packages differently! ultimate is the top tier! use ultimate for the 250 exterior, and premium for the 175 package...IMO

Eric if that's what's happening when you clay you're using the wrong grade of clay for that piticuler clear coat. 99% of the time you should be able to clay a car and not leave any signifigant marring. Marring from clay comes from just a couple of causes. first being contaminated clay. the next being the use of the wrong aggressiveness to the clear coat. They make clay in a wide number of grades. Using too aggressive of a grade on too soft of a clear coat or not using the proper clay lube (or enough of it) will result in marring. If you're going to offer claying service you should have a number of different grades of clay on the ready. Don't just show up with the purple aggressive clay and think your all good. Or the soft grey crap that dosen't cut it most of the time (but is actually what you want on those uber soft clears) You have to know the product your using and it's intended purposes as well as the canvas your performing your art on.
