Looks like Dwayne may have dogged the bullet on this one! Hope everyone else is OK?
Yep, we dodge a major bullet. The storm came on land about 75 miles south of us which gave us an "offshore" wind and put us on the north and west side of the eye of the storm which is the side that you want to be on in a coastal community. It pushes the gulf water away from shore on that side of the storm.
Had the storm hit to the north of us it would have brought a 10-15 storm surge with 145 mph sustained onshore winds.
Ft. Meyers, Punta Gorda and Pt. Charlotte all took a direct hit just 75-80 miles south of where I live. The storm has devastated these cities and the death toll is rising fast.
On the news they showed the roof being ripped off of the Ft. Meyers post office and an Ace Hardware Store leveled down to the ground.
The storm went acrosss Florida and went right across Arcadia which is a small inland town just east of Sarasota. It pretty much destroyed Arcadia. It even ripped the roof off of a hurricane shelter that had over 1200 people inside. Fortunately, no one inside was seriously injured.
As close as all this devastation was and as bad as those sattelite and radar pictures looked. It was just a rainy a breezy tropical day in Sarasota. Very few small branches and leaves down and a minor inconvenience that could have been total devastation.
When hurricanes get that strong they also get tight and very organized, like a buzzsaw.
Thank you for your thoughts and prayers and thinking about us while we took shelter. Please also keep praying for those who were truely impacted by this storm.
Dwayne
