TAR, TAR, Everywhere!!

Well it's road destruction, I mean road construction season here in Colorado. All the roads around my house are being ground down and repaved!! It least it's better than chip sealing them. So, I've a few questions.



How long does it take for the new asphate (sp?) to set up so it doesn't sling onto the car?



Should I wait until it's all done before I spend a day removing the tar from the cars or try to keep with the tar removal weekly?



Will tar remover strip the Zaino off the finish?
 
I can't answer you asphalt question but I do suggest you remove the tar ASAP. The longer it sits on your car the more it bonds to the paint. Yes, tar removers will take off Zaino and every other wax and sealant.
 
As for the asphalt, a lot of contractors will sling sand before they open the road up. Some cities/counties now require contracts to use a rubber/conventional mix when they repave a road, the rubber mix is actually 10% recycled tires!, but its more "sticky" after there complete, hence the sand.........Regardless, once its cooled to an acceptable temp., it gets its "final" roll, with the roller, and after that it can be open for traffic.

If its a road you could avoid for about a week, i would suggest doing so....Theres still materials that workers remove from shovels and equipment that are laying around waiting for an unsuspecting driver to run over, they also use diesel fuel, or soy release, as slip agents to assist in cleaning their tools....so there those items/materials laying around too.......

If you should get petroleum by=products on your paint surface, use 3M residue remover, GooGone, Naturalizer.....They all work very well...I work at a Municipality, and we use the citrus based products on our road crew.....
 
I dont go there Lynn, but I do make them change if their carpooling with me !!!
 
Heh...I had the exact same problem!! My car is literally covered with tar. Will the by-products remove my Klasse/S100?? I don't want to remove it because I did the detailing a month or 2 ago.
 
Tarminator from Stoner....I did a car with tar all over this weekend and I just sprayed the spots with Tarminator and let soak a few then it wiped right off no problems.
 
Folks, keep in mind there are differemt petroleum products that may require different solutions i.e. crackfill, (thick) which may be rubber based will require something stiffer than Tarminator...SS1H (thin), which is what they spray to asphalt to make new asphalt adhere, is water soluble, until it sets, but is easily removed with citrus based removers or lub's like WD 40....Road paints, oh boy....Some are water based, some are hi temp plastics (thermo plastic)..diesel fule works great...Ive also heard Kerosene, and WD40 work well....amongst others mentioned in previous threads.....
 
Thanks for all the info Patrick. A few more weeeeks and the guys here should be finished with the three miles of 5 lanes! The crew certainly seems slow but they've avoided rush hour for the most part. No matter what, someone's going to b*tch at them. Of course they could work at night?!?!
 
Im sure it would strip your wax, maybe not a sealant like BF or Klasse, Platinum, but more than likely a Carnauba....As with using any APC, you should always reseal your paint.....Just make it part of your regular routine....:D
 
Stoner's Tarmintor will most definately strip a Carnauba wax. I bet most sealants as well. It works pretty good, but it is strong. I personally prefer my microfiber wash mitt now. It works just as good IMHO.

Stoner's Tarmintor is the only thing I've used to get off tar for the last few years with great success.



Not only does it take off carnuba, but it also has removed both Zaino and Blackfire on my cars as well.
 
Oh man...it's gonna be a loooooong day removing those stubborn crap. It's all over the paint...roof, hood, liftgate, doors...basically every single square inch of the exterior.



Hmm...wondering if I can use SMR and a PC?? I'm planning to get one from Lowes. I'll probably use the provided polishing pad. I've got swirls on the paint anyway so I guess I can get two birds with one stone, maybe??

The thought of running a pc over gritty tar sends chills down my spine. I wouldnt pc until all the tar was removed personally. To much of a chance of contaminants getting under the pad scratching everything up.
 
WD40 does wonder on tar as well. It dissovles it and would be a cheap alternative if you have to do the whole car.
