Swissvax: Is the consensus around here HIT or....

Exactly.

Think about the last time you bought a car - all the handling/horsepower/gas mileage debating. -In the end, most people go with the one they like the looks of best.

I posted this response to high end waxes on another forum yesterday..

Here are my feelings towards boutique waxes in general:

I think everything is a mindset, you think what you want to think... we all do but essentially, that "warm fuzzy feeling" you get when you buy something expensive or rare is just in your head, it doesn't always mean that product is actually better.

Few things (cars being one of them) are easy to justify with the price you paid. You can have a $300k 599GTB Ferrari and sit inside and say okay "The leather is soft, the trim is real CF, the user interface is very intuitive (F1 tranny etc), the performance is mind blowing, the car is surprisingly comfortable". and then think you yourself... okay now I know why this Ferrari is 3x the price of a say a Z06, which may have great performance but lacks a lot of other traits the Ferrari has. See in that situation there are reasons why 1 product is superior to the other and demands the price. Not to say name brand image doesn't also factor into the extraordinary price. Zymol = Ferrari in terms of name brand recognition in each of their own markets.

With most detailing products however its tough to justify the price, because when you boil it down its very very difficult to differentiate between 2 products (1 being expensive, the other being moderately priced) and their performance. Zymol Royale and Collinite 915 for example... pretty much 2 extremes in the market performing the same function very similarly.

I think when you buy something exclusive such as Vintage (not that I own any) you not just buying a car wax. Your buying an experience. I mean im sure people get all giggly exited when their Vintage arrived, then they opened the box and saw the crystal container and grinned. And when they picture that crystal container in a write up its a symbol of quality and its something used by very few so in turn that makes them feel special. I really dont think people feel that way when they got their first pot of Collinite 915:woot:

I think that is all factored into what your paying for. I also think people try to rationalize a lot when they buy a boutique wax. They may think it will be worth it for the "upsell" so it technically is an investment in you business. Personally I believe a lot of that rationalization is just another way of getting what you want. And remember this is mostly seen with waxes, an LSP product, and product that most detailers feel adds maybe that last 5-8% of gloss to the finish. So many of us repeat the phrase "Its all in the prep work" and waxes really have nothing to do proper technique or preparation (wash, clay, correction work). The last wax I used was Lusso Oro and that was back in July, now I strictly use sealants just because I like the look they give and I feel my customers will appreciate the durability of them compared to most waxes.

Just think if WE as detailers have a very diffuclt time differentiating between 2 different LSP products how do you think a customer feels, someone who really knows nothing and has little to compare it to? I think about this alot...

Here is a prime example of a consumers reaction to getting a high end wax, in this case it was SV BOS, I cant explain it but if you look at the pictures you may understand the point im trying to make...

UK order is here! - Detailing Bliss Forum

What you link my thread and you didn't even comment in it! I am offended. lol :wavey

For starters I don't believe this product is much "better" than everything else out there. So I am not one of those swissvax/zymol or nothing guys. I use 845 to maintain my parent's cars and Zaino with mine. I use my nuba's mainly as a topper for a little "extra" something for my personal cars. Even if it maybe a very slight. This is my rational not as an upsell or anything else for my customers.

I bought this wax becuase I was not content with my Souveran and it's 2-3 week life on the paint (beading). So in turn I bought BoS for its marginally better looks, beading and longer durability Does that justify it's price point? Probably not so yes DSMS is right I also bought it partially for the experience and the name. I will not lie I like nice things. I willingly spend hundreds on a pair of jeans, or shoes maybe even a grand for a designer jacket. Can everyone justify these things? Certainly not. Is it worth the money spent? Depends on who you ask. I am sure a person on the street will not be able to tell if I bought something from Rodeo drive (Boutique strip Beverly hills) versus just H&M (cheap designer like clothing) and therefore be a "waste". But if you ask someone into fashion the difference becomes much more drastic. They would be able to tell you why each cut/fit of the item is so, why the color schemes to go together, quality of the material and so on.

What I am trying to say is to the normal consumer can't really appreciate all of the differences between lets say a NXT paste versus a Zymol/Swissvax. Like you most likely would not be able to appreciate designer clothing vs normal clothing. The people who are into detailing like us will be able to tell you the nuba content maybe even the solvents/oils used in each wax. What characteristics we believe each wax does to the look of the paint how long it beads on the paint the size of the beads...etc I will go one step further than DSMS. You buy these things to set yourself apart; to distinguish you from the crowd and show people your individual detailing STYLE in the detailing world. Whether it be "normal" products or "high end" or even "rare" products it shows your mindset and what you like to do. All get the job done and in very similar fashions so it just a matter of style/preference in my book. This isn't just about waxes either it as about all the detailing products we buy. Most of us can polish paint to about 99% correction, it is what products/techniques (gloss it or zaino; zymol or swissvax; lake country or 3M Uk pads; menzerna or optimum polish...etc) aka style that get us to our final result is what sets us apart.

This is why I think we buy products. Everyone likes to have there own ways and variations of doing things and we are all a little bit different. If everyone was in consensus about which products were best we would all have the same thing. That would be pretty boring in my book. I love the fact well all have differing opinions that's what makes hobbies/sub cultures so fun! :bigups
