Swirl Spotting Light Souces Test

01bluecls- That's a great point! Turning out everything except your inspection light makes a huge difference :xyxthumbs

YoMike- Autopian Bill D (MIA but still remembered), who has a white Cadillac in show condition, found that, much to his surprise, fluorescents worked incredibly well for spotting marring on white. I haven't been able to test that assertion as I haven't had a white vehicle around lately, but they did seem to work OK back when I did have white cars. Sorta the opposite situation from inspecting silver.

I agree there Accumlator, As we chatted over the PM's you know what’s my problem.

even the halogens didn't show everything like the sun outside the next day did!

which is really a waste of your effort to polish in a none good lighted area as the sun reveals everything...

Here's yet another argument for my beloved (or is it hated  :chuckle: ) incandescents:

After playing with my painter's 3M light and telling him how it didn't show the marring...he said something like "I wouldn't worry about it, it doesn't show in sunlight anyhow". I had to explain to him that the only thing that matters to *me* is how it looks *to me* and I look at it in my shop under my lights :D Sun is great for holograms, but same ol' broken record: IME it takes numerous lighting sources to cover all the bases.

Not sure where to get the 3M light, he got his from his 3M supplier :nixweiss

...One thing, where can I buy on of those Sun guns?

the wife is going to kill me, I am buying next month the Vintage Wax and now this

sun gun :sign
Any paint and body shop supplier that handles 3M products should be able to order a Sun Gun for you.

(You’re on your own for sneaking it past your wife. :bat :hide: )

PC.

These lights show marring and defects very wll, but would wheelmarks/buffer trails be visible? The kind that can be detected in direct sun light mosty?

IME certain such rotary-induced issues are *only* visible in natural sunlight, at least on "forgiving" colors like silver and/or when the issues are very mild. Mike Phillips at Meguair's has had the same experience (last time we discussed it, dunno if his opinion has changed).

just picked up both I guess with the brinkman, sun gun , and halogens I will be all covered.

Well, I'd spend another ~$20 for a hand-held, high-wattage incandescent too ;) *THEN* you'd have all the bases covered!

pyiu- That's interesting! I assume you're using it with a high-wattage, clear/unfrosted bulb in an otherwise dark environment and varying the illumination angle/distance. It's the *only* thing I've found that works for me when I'm trying to spot marring on silver :nixweiss Guess it's another of those YMMV things.
