Surbuf and griots da magic!

This is my first time doing paint correction with these pads and boy was I amazed. I started off using 5.5in surbuf+megs105 then moved down to 5.5 in lc flat pads+optimum hyper compound and finally 5.5in white ccs pad with optimum hyper compound all on my Griots DA v2. My lsp was pinnacle 180 wax I got for free from Autogeek from their last sale(thanks for the gift AG!). Just wanted to share them incase some of you were looking to try out these surbuf pads. Great price, about $13 for 2 pads after tax. I really liked not having to use a rotary to do this level of correction and still within a reasonable timeframe. For pictures check out my yelp link Precision Auto Salon - Seattle, WA

For some reason I couldn't load them up on here. I posted two sets of before and after pics on my yelp account (the black tundra pics), please let me know what you guys think.

You used Opt. Hyper Compound after 205? I thought the Hyper was more aggressive than 205. I have some 105 and 205 on the way and lots of Opt. products. Just want to clarify.

Thanks, Rob

Yeah, i know its different then what everyone on here usually does, i just had to work with what i had. I find hyper compound to have just a little more cut then opt polish but less than megs 105. Figured as long as I used the right pads i would get the look i was going for, hope this is useful to someone.

jose206- Glad to hear that Surbuf combo works so well for you too. I bought some Surbufs after hearing how great they are with M105, seems like everybody was telling me I just had to try it.

I'm *really* intrigued by the idea of following M105/Surbuf with M105/foam finishing pad. Sounds nutty to me, but both Barry Theal and David Fermani insist that it works great. I might oughta start a whole thread about it...

wouldn't you use that for really hard clears or really messed up cars? (still trying to figure out how to find out which cars are hard coats without testing)

Yeah, presumably.

still trying to figure out how to find out which cars are hard coats without testing..

Other than a few generalizations (e.g., most Audis are very hard), you just have to try a test spot.

I started a thread about that over the summer, not much input from the site though as every car can be different. I've found that GM paint is hard, ford is soft, most euro and asian paint is soft too but some Bimmers can be mean.

Is the surbuf basically a microfiber on a pad? I have MF bonnets-would they do the same kind of correction?

Nah, it's a weird, unique thing...little "fingers" almost like a variation on velcro. Google-fu it up or check out one of gmblack3a's writeups.

MF bonnets/etc. are completely different.

Functionally, the Surbuf is more like a type of wool IMO, but you really gotta see/read/etc. for yourself as I'm at a loss to explain it decently.

Accumulator is correct as usual.

I guess the best way to describe them would be "micro fingers."

Heh heh, thanks. And also per usual, you came through with good info on the Surbufs :D Just bought a few myself after Barry and David F. talked my ear off about how I *really* oughta try 'em on my new beater-vehicle projects, and you can bet I'll be using your totorial as a starting point.

The black wool pads cut much better on the 3401. FYI.

hmmm good to know lol hopefully I'll never need them--but maybe I'll buy up a set just in case(maybe I'll put them in like a "Break In Case Of Emergency" type things)

I'd be surprized if you didn't need to deep cut if you detail cars. Very few cars run around with decent paint. Also wool is much safer then hard foam pads like yellow/orange.

I'm no pro amd it's been half a decade since I worked for a detailer soo I haven't really seen too many that needed that much work. I figured the surbuf pads and black wool would take off top much clear..how is it safer? enlighten me because I was a bit confused to when they said wet sanding could save more clear than using pads ?
