Stop giving wool pads a bad name. They are your friend

Sorry Kevin, been quite busy working on two Aston Martin Vantage's yesterday and spending six hours doing R & D on an MGB GT

I wont name the industry expert but you probably know him well

Still trying to find those videos

Oh, okay.

I never asked you to name the legend. I just want to see the video.

Now I am really curious! :spy:

"Legends. Legends. Does he mean detailers? Or guys that work for companies? Or guys that make videos about polishing so that others might learn from them? Maybe it was a guy that actually designs all sorts of pads, and he was simply pointing out the features of one pad and how it compares to another?

I just don't know. Hmm..." :hurt:

Actually, I don't know many legends, so you'd think this would be easy...

All I wanted to do was see who was "...giving wool pads a bad name..."

'Cuz I wanted to give him a piece of your... err... my mind! Ya' know? Let this legend have a chance to discuss it! Or maybe straighten him out! Find out where this misguided hatred came from! For pads!

Glad to hear you're so busy. Not much going on 'round here.

Well, I did polish out a stainless steel coffee pot and a frying pan with M105 and a microfiber disc.

Not worthy of a video, however. But they both turned out nice.

Maybe you can recommend a guy to me that can tell me where to find the link to the video you are speaking of.

Or not speaking of.

If I was going to start a thread about someone or a process in a video, I might be able to find that video in a few days. If it does exist...

Otherwise I would just say, "Why don't many use wool anymore?"

What makes you think we know him? Especially well. Does he post here? Can you atleast give us a hint? Maybe something to search under?

Ahhh, Mel Craig huh? He's definately a well established industry veteran for sure. He goes by "The Total Pro" and "Mel Craig" on this forum, but does not post ever(unfortunately). I tried searching on You-Tube & his website for some juicy rotary videos but came up empty.

You may not be aware of this, but he's inked a deal with PBMA and now sponsors and posts on AutopiaForums....

Yay!

Thank you for finding the information, SVR.

Don't know any of them personally. Heard of one guy, but that's it.

Gonna have to eventually weave my way through the site to see what the the wool deal is all about. :pop2:

If Mel were smart he would be posting over here? LOL... Well, I do posting on Autopia Car Care Forums and really would like to call them my home for now! However, Jason Rose just asked me to stop by as well. So, I will come by once and a while to post over here and just say hello now and then. Nice to know Im thought about in the industry. LOL.. As far as this thread goes and when it come to my teaching and my techniques there are a lot of variables and different situations. But, for the most part I will stand behind my teaching and my years of experience when it comes to wool pads. Do I still use wool pads? Very rarely! I have found that there are so many great combinations available to us now that the use of wool pads on a consistent basis is really not always necessary and in a lot of cases over kill. Yes, I still use wool pads but, with all the new combinations available to us today its been great working with some of the best foam pads, cutting chemicals and new pieces of equipment that Im getting un-believable results in my work and so are my students and fellow detailing associates. I take pride and specialize in paint defect removal now... Over the past several years I've found that by using the 3 combinations I teach, Im getting results! Results that most people never see in paint finishes very much. My brothers and I have grown up in the industry. Im 53 years old now! Wow, Im an old guy! Old Guys Rule! and have been detailing almost full time for the past 35 years. I have seen a lot of things in my Detailing Career and have worked with many people from all over the world. Both my brothers are almost 10 years older then me and they have been down the same road. Both of them are my heros when it comes to knowledge and experience in auto detailing, paint technology, paint defect removal and "Paint Defect Control" All three of us got into painting cars, both single stage and multiple stage painting along with paint correction. We wanted to be the best so we spent a lot of time in paint booths to learn how to be the best when it comes to paint technology and paint defect removal. We hung out with some of the best painters to pick their brains and try and figure out what works, what is necessary and what is the best way to approach and evaluate paint damage. I spent years using wool as my number one cutting choice. But, over all the past few years with all the new product available to us today, things have changed and it has become a whole lot easier to remove and control paint damage. Wool pads are great, they work and they have a place in our industry for some of you.

I heard, just recently, Mike Phillips say, if it works for you and your getting the results you are looking for then stick with it. We are all after the same thing! Customer satisfaction and us making some good money when we perform our services.

Jason Rose and I are about to do another episode Radio Show this week about his new idea's in Buffing Techniques and Im sure you will all be very excited about what he will be sharing.

If there is anything I can do for any of you, please feel free to contact me anytime at all. You can visit me through my website at Auto Detailing | Car Detailing Business | Auto Detail Training or contact me via e-mail.. I will and always have given everyone the best I have. Good luck to all of you... Mel

Welcome to autopia Mel! Thanks for your reply.

You are very welcome and looking forward to participating with some of the issues, challenges and successes we are all experiencing...

Thanks for replying to this thread Mel. Your experience, enthusiasm and response is well respected and received. I hope you continue to be active on our forum. You will find that Autopia.org has the largest group of industry leading individuals anywhere and that our whole community can benefit from your wisdom.

Hey David, Thanks for the invite and I will do my best in poking in as I can to add to the Forum. And yes, I've heard nothing but great things about the Autopia.org forum... Im always doing what ever I can to raise the bar in our industry and even more when it comes to helping people make money with the auto detailing and reconditioning business opportunity.

My pleasure Mel. Glad you rejoined. I'll look forward to seeing you around. Don't be surprised if you get an occasional PM from members asking for your input when it could be used.

Welcome Mr Craig. Great to have you here. You are definately right about the combinations and tools that we have at our disposal today

Microfibre pads, Surbuf Microfinger, DA Forced Rotation machines, the Buff Pro, Single polish systems, German open cell foam, euro open and closed, american foams of various grades, 1ply and 4 ply wools, foamed wool etc

What you have said about wool in your post is quite true. sometimes wool is overkill for defect removal and microfibre, surbufs and foams can take care of a heck of a lot of stuff, however wool and foamed wool still has its place, especially for orange peel removal without sanding, although a product from asia and a certain type of foam pad may soon take its place for orange peel removal without sanding using a rotary with a high speed, fast movement motion.

in my eyes, the car can have the best shine in the world but if there is more than a small amount of orange peel, it drives me nuts.

Some of what you said in one of your radio show episodes is quite true. yes wool can be messy especially if it isnt washed out and spun before use and some with 2 inch pile height and 1ply non twisted style have way too much frizz for ages

However one can get virtually no marring at all on most paints, especially in Australia but of course those with billions of scratches but quite soft paint it will leave marring behind. thats understandable. It all comes down to pad lube, the wetting agent used during polishing if required and slowing down from the rpm used to correct (mostly 1000 to 1300 for me) down the rev range eventually going back to 600. then one can skip pad grades and save paint. blowing out the wool pad half way through doing each paint section with compressed air is a great way (thanks todd helme)

I only correct the same car once. I'll do spot repairs but besides that, from there I add a quartz/glass coating to the paint and fill in any new marring long term with it.

Am not a believer in using abrasives all the time on the same car and every car that I do. them days are gone.

We haven't seen the best yet when it comes to buffing materials ie discs/pads. there will be much more in the future which may see the end of the rotary polisher as a defect removal tool, perhaps its only place will be orange peel removal due to its ability to plane the paint flat and semi reflow it aka dissolve deep deep scratches back into the paint substrate.

this is where I am focusing my efforts. there isnt much we cannot fix now. a little sanding if absolutely necessary topped with the fusion technology I have called Shockwave with ingredients from the body shop/refinishing industry which are far more powerful than polishes at purifying the paint and repairing defects/peel.

Anyway I have admiration and respect for your work. However I must say that there is more to enhancing paint than just cleaning, correcting it and waxing it. compounds and waxes are history, there time has ended. Purifying paint via specialty chemical agents, softening and dissolving deep scratches for easier correction, replenishing the paint that is buffed off with a synthetic form of clear coat that is buffed or wiped in, repairing oxidation and many paint problems without abrasives and much more can be done to paint. Some of what I am using and what I custom make (consumables) comes from the body shop/refinishing industry and other industries and this is where we will see the biggest change to ours.

Sanding still has its place (wet or dry) but its now been replaced for orange peel removal as doing it with a rotary and foam or old flat wool is superior. none or minimal paint removed compared to sanding.

Now that you are here Mel, we have a brilliant community and with guys such as the amazing barry theal, Kevin Brown and many others, we can share ideas and plans for the future and our knowledge and create an era that this industry has never ever seen. Currently us detailers/refinishers sand, purify paint, thicken it, abrasively correct and polish it, fix spot scratches and make cars look their best.

But who says we cannot do more to paint. I can see a day where machine tools wont even be needed. cars will be polished in a totally different way. no abrasives at all

Virtually permanent filler products that keep defects and new ones under control all year long or even longer.

don't just dream it, do it.

SVR, you make great points here and I too respect the opinion of other professional detailers. Im stoked to be included in and with some of the best detailers in the world on this site. Looking forward to sharing more back and forth. Thanks for the thoughts and the kudos, it means a lot... Good luck to you and hope one day we can meet or talk live...

MEL

Much appreciated Mel. There is plenty of learning for myself yet, I've always focused on paint, correcting coloured and painted plastic A, B and C Pillars, most exterior trim and wheels but interior work using steamers, ozone stuff and wheel arch show quality detailing are what I really want to learn and need to mostly

I'll be back in the USA next year, mostly Boise Idaho but also LA and Big Bear Lake CA and would love to share knowledge and also do some training on areas where I am weak and also wet and dry sanding, de nibbing etc which I've only just begun to try out last year and rarely this year so far.

Hey David, I know you have an event this weekend and was wondering if you guys would like to have me stop by?
