SOLD the Porter Cable and

I have a rotary and a cheapo DA buffer (those 10" ones)....

I love my rotary and it really gave me results that I couldn't have done by hand or by DA... (although I don't have a quality PC-like tool)...

But I also tell newbies not to get lured into the rotary bandwagon... Yes it's great, but 9 out of 10 times, if you plan to use it for your own ride, you'll find a DA much more useful for maintenance detailing while a rotary is for restoration detailing...

I use my rotary with a W9000 non-abrasive finishing pad for polishing sometimes, and it will not cut paint more than what my polish's abrasiveness can perform... But unlike a slower DA buffer, I still have to worry about burning trims, heating up paint too much, etc...

Unless you plan to do several cars over time, I would suggest that most car owners (not detailers by profession) to stick with a good DA and just rent a rotary when the restoration time arrives...

I love this thread

but I'm confused

First I was going to ask Santa a Random Orbital

Then I was reading all the posts on ROB's and buffers and I figuered that if I was to buy only one machine it would prob be better to buy a rotary , cause it does everyhting a ROB does and much more.Especialy the Makita 9227CB with it's 0-600 and 0-3000RPM settings.

But after reading this thread ,that creepy feeling comes back saying that I might ruin paint with a rotary, but then again if I stay in the "no danger-zone"(1000RPM) I will be all right

Choices,...

This is a decision I will have to make

Hi again Christiaan... Be aware of the 1000rpm "rule", it's not always accurate... With some older paint (or softer paint) around bumper edges (like the areas where the trunk lid meets the bumper) the paint can chip off rather easily even with a non-abrasive pad and a 1.5 setting with the Makita... If in doubt, keep it at speed 1 and use a fine polish that doesn't need much "breaking down"...

Personally, when I use my rotary for "maintainance polishing", I usually use the non-abrasive finishing pad with DACP then wax by hand... Works really well and fast... My cheapo orbital doesn't do the job well when used with SMR or DACP...

It's really a toss-up whether how comfy you'll get with the chosen tool... If you feel good using the PC, then go for a PC-like device...

I haven't used a PC (specific brand/model) so I can't attest to its effectivity compared to a rotary... But being a rotary owner, I really like the tool... For me, polishing takes the most time out of my paint detailing chores, so having a rotary is a godsend... I usually wax pretty efficiently by hand anyway, so the rotary is just right for me...
