:nixweiss  If there was all that money flowing into the treasury, it was running out the other end, because Reagan ran up a debt bigger than anyone could imagine...until W. Unless I was dreaming, we had at least one balanced budget when Clinton was President.

Why do you think that happened? (the economic boom that lasted for 20 plus years) And you didn't answer my question to you about the health care issue. I am not trying to argue but I would like to hear your point of view!

I'm not getting into the argument nor was I trying to answer all questions asked, I was simply pointing out that we have had at least one balanced budget in contemporary times and the money "flowing into the treasury" was matched and exceeded by the money flowing out.

I believe he made the tough choices such as the tax cuts which led to the greatest amount of money to flow into the treasury ever and created the economic boom that lasted for 20 plus years.

Like GWB, giving money away you do not have is easy thing not a tough thing...People always want something for nothing. Too bad states, businesses, and individuals cannot spend money they do not have for that long -- it is called bankruptcy. The government can just print more money and they do....

The economy did not grow for 20 years. There was the early 90's slowdowns. GHWB paid the price for the Reagan spending since the Fed (Greenspan) refused to relax the money supply until the government over spending was reduced. It was the economy that helped Clinton win and when Clinton took actions to balance the budget (yes, raise taxes) then the Fed relaxed and we got the 2000 technology bubble.

Remember that it is the Fed that is subsizing all the new equipment your fire, police depts have and most of the improvements in quality of life (better roads, better schools, etc). That is what people seem to want but without paying for it.

If you got rid of entitlements you will not solve the budget issue. If the government stopped spending you still have this interest on the debt to pay that is enormous.

And we are going to pay for this deficit spending in the long run with higher interest rates since the dollar is getting less attractive and in order to attract people to buy Treasuries we will have to offer a higher rate. It is going to tough for the Fed as the years go by.

I think Ross Perot was the last Presidential candidate who talked turkey about the deficit and the debt. People seem to lose sight of the incredible debt, the interest on that, and who owns it ($1 trillion by the Chinese).

Yes it would be hard to get tough on China when they have their hands in your pockets. What disturbs me most is that the Republicans should in theory be most vocal about this but they are not. The problem really is most republicans today are really democrats who left the party due to the civil rights and religious reasons as much as "tax and spend".

I do not think any of the current candidates has the guts or influence to make a significant change but we do need a change.

Hmm... interesting video regarding friends of Giuliani.

Giuliani’s ties to terrorism? - MSNBC Video

Seems a lot more sinister to me than Ron Paul unknowingly receiving a $500 donation from a Neo-Nazi...

It would also appear that Rudy thinks taxpayers should be paying for his vacations in the Hamptons, attributing the expenses to "security"...

FOXNews.com - Rudy Giuliani Denies Wrongdoing in Travel With Security to Hamptons During Affair - Politics | Republican Party | Democratic Party | Political Spectrum

Comptroller questioned Giuliani's security spending - CNN.com

Hmm from the headlines today even on Giuliani friendly Fox News it would appear that Giuliani is probably done as a serious candidate.

Does this look like someone we want for President ;)

I do not like Rudy. He has as many personal problems/baggage as Bill Clinton. Mitt seems a lot more honest.

Whoever is for the Fair Tax, i.e. elimination of the IRS, I'll vote for in a heartbeat! So, I guess that leaves Huckabee and Paul...

McCain vs Clinton - McCain will win. I think there is enough dislike of Clintons to motivate the core GOP to vote.

McCain vs Obama - Obama will win. Obama will likely bring out a lot of new voters.

Why does everyone like someone who promises a tax cut and then spends like there is no tomorrow.

McCain. I think he'll do a good job fixing our economic problems. I really woulda preferred Romney, as he's more conservative, but McCain does have the most political experience. Definitely not Clinton.

I strongly believe in a government that offers assistance to its people, through programs like EI (employment insurance), welfare (for temporary financial need), and free access to health care for every citizen. Services are what the nation should be providing to its citizens. It should be a caregiver to all. Tax cuts should not be viewed as a good thing because they hurt the very base that needs them the most.

I am very lucky to live in such a nation that provides for its people. If I were to live in such a country that did not, as yours doesn't, I would opt for a leader who may at least effect some change in the nation. My vote would be for Obama.

I honestly think all of them suck. The pussification of our country is out of control, and none of them seem to be offereing any help.

Honestly, long as it isnt Obama. I've said that a million times and ppl are like "it's b/c he's black". Honestly that isnt it. It's b/c he did not put his hand over his heart during a national anthem some months ago. And early reports have stated that he requests when he's sworn in, he uses the muslim bible. That to me, isnt what an AMERICAN leader should be.

Course, i'm just 20, so what do I know.
