05Corolla is interested in taking out swirls and minor imperfections yet people keep talking about medium to heavy stuff like #83 or even heavy cut leveler with 4" pads.
I would just get #80 and be done with it. It is efficient enough to take swirls and minor imperfections out yet safe enough that Mike Phillips has newbs use it in his Saturday classes.
I'm not trying to argue with you, but he did say he wants to get rid of
"hideous swirls". In my experience Meg's #83 and SSR2.5 aren't all that terribly aggressive unless you use them with a cutting pad. The point is, if he's going to order some polish to remove imperfections, he might as well get one for lighter defects and one for the more serious defects if needed.
I like #80, but it is pretty limited on what it is able to remove..... depending on the paint/defects. Since we don't know how bad those
"hideous swirls" are, I just think he'd be wise to have a more aggressive polish on hand if needed. It doesn't really matter if he chooses Meg's, Poorboy's, OPT, Menzerna, or XMT...... but if he's going to be ordering this stuff he might as well get what he might need, be that now or sometime in the future.
But you do bring up a very valid point that he should start out with a less aggressive polish/pad combo and then move up only if it's needed. I think most (or some) of us took for granted that
"hideous swirls" would require something with more bite than #80, but w/o seeing them that determination is hard to make.... especially since we don't know how hard the clear is on his car.
While #83 isn’t my favorite polish, I have never found it difficult to work with, other than it dusts a bit more than I like sometimes. But I have read where a lot of people have problems with it….. guess I just lucked out with the technique I use with it.
