A question - with regard to these new clears, you've been very careful to say they will mar more easily early on without saying categorically that they will be better/harder after a year or two - only implying this. I know you'd prefer to speak from personal experience and fact, but seeing as how we'll all have to wait a year or two to find out for sure, I'd like to know if your statements about this future performance are simply reflecting what the paint mfg's are telling you, or if you personally believe it as well?
And a related question - I think you may have covered this before I joined tghe board - if you can point me to a thread that is fine - but what is meant by "1K" clear and "2K" clear?

The new clear is scheduled to be applied in 2002 by GM and DCX on some of the top line models and then as time progresses will be changed over to in other plants.
The difference of a 1K and a 2K are very complicated, however, simply put a 1K uses a safe crosslinker of melamine and a 2K uses an isocyanide crosslinker. The 2K is closer chemically, but is not, to an expoxy type of clear.
The new 1K does attain additional hardness in a year of so, as we have worked with several test panels over the past year.
The assembly plant and it's process may create some of the variance in the time needed to attain the hardness.
Some plants may elect to reduce the amount of time in the bake oven and slightly increase the heat to balance it out, while others, will run a slower line and stay with the recommended heat level.
Each plant manager makes the call, and hot selling vehicles will see the modification of the process quite often in order to meet customer product demands.
Our AutoPreservation division has been visited often during the last 9 months by paint engineers from various manufacaturers to observe first hand the etching concern. ( we do 200 to 300 vehicles a week, mostly new vehicles for dealerships which we predeliver for them) and often will be required to attempt to remove light etching for the dealers.
Since Tim and I work with all the manufacturers at OEM level, they have found it useful to use our facility for damage audits of clear etching and other enviromental concerns of paint and trim.
There is still etching occurring and we are not seeing a dramatic downturn during warm weather in the concern.
The concern is always most prevelant during warmer months, due to the thermal elasticity of the clears. The heat expands it, makes it become more porus, the pollutants such as acids, strong alkalines are mixed with the rain water, the higher skin temperature of the clear, the normal heat as well, raise the reactivity level of the acids/alkalines and this makes the etching happen.
Cold weather, you hardly ever see etching take place.

Just like me... when I was a newbie at FLONIese. I usually just skipped the FLONIese until I got more time... and read it word by word. It's getting a bit easier....understanding and reading it...
